* Pat Quinn’s latest Internet promo video is probably the best yet. Quinn campaign staffer Simon Edelman is underpaid, overworked and hugely talented, and he gets better all the time. Have a look

  1. Just calling it the “Year of Reform” doesn’t make it so.

Comment by truthman Thursday, Dec 10, 09 @ 4:36 pm

  2. truthman, you’re reading the Tribune editorial page too much. lol

Comment by Rich Miller Thursday, Dec 10, 09 @ 4:38 pm

  3. Great shots - Edelman has quite an artistic quality in his work. He understands perspective. Good timing with the music.

  4. Its not a bad ad. I think you either do a string of reformers saying nice things about the gov, or throw a bunch of words on the screen, but not both.

Also, soundtrack was a little distracting, especially the lack of transition between songs.

Why not just Tracy Chapman’s version of “Talking ’bout a Revolution” throughout the whole thing?

  5. ===especially the lack of transition between songs.===

I saw something different than you did.

Comment by Rich Miller Thursday, Dec 10, 09 @ 4:44 pm

  6. truthman: The only “Proof of Reform” that the Tribune editorial board will accept is Mike Madigan no longer in the Speaker’s Office and Democrats no longer in power.

Based on the Tribune’s circular reasoning, as long as the people keep elected Democrats, there must be something wrong with the system.

They are Tony Peraica without the pitchforks.

  7. Rich, oh please……I’m much more concise than Mother Trib!

Comment by truthman Thursday, Dec 10, 09 @ 4:44 pm

  8. == I saw something different than you did. ==

Sorry, maybe its the same song, but there’s a moment of “dead air” around 30 sec. and then a complete change in tempo and volume.

Comment by Yellow Dog Democrat Thursday, Dec 10, 09 @ 4:47 pm

  9. Interesting that he got Lisa Madigan in there. I wonder what she thinks about that.

Who does the tune and what’s its name? I tried google but don’t think I found it.

Comment by wordslinger Thursday, Dec 10, 09 @ 4:49 pm

  10. It’s a Beatles song, but not sure who is covering it.

Comment by Rich Miller Thursday, Dec 10, 09 @ 4:50 pm

  11. You know, that might be The Beatles. The song has quite a history.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/You_Know_My_Name_%28Look_Up_the_Number%29

If it is The Beatles, and they didn’t pay usage, I have another Beatles song for you: “You Can’t Do That.”

  12. Edleman is talented. No doubt.

Comment by David Ormsby Thursday, Dec 10, 09 @ 5:53 pm

  13. The only thing missing was Quinn’s punch number! Would have been a good ending, right after “look up the number.” Nice job though.

    Comment by Matt G. Thursday, Dec 10, 09 @ 6:11 pm

  14. Simon, you’re the best!

Comment by Elizabeth Austin Thursday, Dec 10, 09 @ 6:54 pm

  15. I like the look and sound of the ad. But reform? I truly think the very word “reform” as it relates to government has become meaningless, and a joke, in Illinois. Maybe campaigns and their agencies would do better to consult a thesaurus to find another word for reformishness–one that is not considered such an eye roller.

Comment by Responsa Thursday, Dec 10, 09 @ 6:55 pm

  16. Great video. That kid is great.

Punch numbers are not determined yet because people may still be kicked off the ballot.

Comment by Little Lebowski Urban Achiever Thursday, Dec 10, 09 @ 6:58 pm

  17. Speaking of Quinn, did he put these people up to this…

    http://www.sj-r.com/breaking/x1903560875/Social-service-agencies-call-on-Illinois-to-pay-bills

    ?

If so, Quinn needs to stop rallying people to protest (i.e., social service providers in the summer, students receiving MAP and now this). Short-term borrowing will help no one and nothing at this point.

  18. this is a substantive and fun look. kudos Mr. Edelman.

Comment by Amalia Thursday, Dec 10, 09 @ 7:33 pm

  19. For being some 20 year old campaign kid, the production quality and editing are on par, if not better than some of the half-baked garbage that campaigns pay 250k to national media firms for. Send me your card kid, I will be your agent.

Comment by Knob Creek Time Thursday, Dec 10, 09 @ 7:40 pm

  20. I’d like the vid, Rich. However, the cuts seemed just a little too choppy. Not much, but some.

Other than that, he’s definitely defined the right persona for Quinn. Nice job for a young un!

  21. Meant to say “I LIKE the vid, Rich….”

Comment by Anonymous Thursday, Dec 10, 09 @ 7:54 pm

  22. Not bad. As to the song, it’s a Beatles rarity (and it’s their version), “You Know My Name (look up the Number)” and the song is a riot. They work in this lounge singer schtick that’s priceless. Mr. Edelman’s got a great ear, too.

Comment by Rubbernecker Thursday, Dec 10, 09 @ 9:01 pm

  23. Another excellent job. Not to swell his head, but this kid’s work (presumably with some guidance from Ms. Austin) is really a great model of what can be done online with video. They just need to do a bit better job of promoting these.

Comment by Chicago Cynic Thursday, Dec 10, 09 @ 9:35 pm

  24. Quinn’s the hardest working man in showbiz. He’s got a new video on QuinnStories as well.

    Comment by PrettyImpressed&AlwaysWellDressed Thursday, Dec 10, 09 @ 10:09 pm

  25. Little Lebowski Urban Achiever- good point. I stand corrected.

    Comment by Matt G. Friday, Dec 11, 09 @ 8:46 am

  26. Simon is going to be impossible to hang out with now, congrats bro.

Comment by Small Town Liberal Friday, Dec 11, 09 @ 9:10 am

  27. Oh, and Chicago Cynic, Simon has been making these videos since before Ms. Austin joined the campaign.

Comment by Small Town Liberal Friday, Dec 11, 09 @ 9:11 am

  28. I knew Simon before he got famous - Wha wut!

Comment by Daniel Friday, Dec 11, 09 @ 11:00 am

  29. Hey, we all work together. But Simon doesn’t need much guidance to keep on making the world’s best campaign videos.

Comment by Elizabeth Austin Friday, Dec 11, 09 @ 11:31 am

  30. That was flat out terrific work. Timing, transition. Edelman is bringing an artistic eye to the campaign videos that is rarely seen.
And by the way, there are no song transitions-it’s one song.
