  2. Regarding the moviemaking incentive; I think it’s terrible public policy, and always have. If wages are so high and work rules too restrictive in Chicago that Illinois isn’t competitive, then let’s use public money to subsidize those wages???

Well, I have some other suggestions. Since both Ford and Chrysler have plants here, and both companies are dying under the burden of their wage and benefits structure (among other things), let’s subsidize those wages thru additional tax breaks for the companies. They could move plants here from other states and effectively counter their payroll cost problem nationwide with our help.

When someplace isn’t competitive but could be if it chose to, then helping it out with public money merely subsidizes the inefficiency rather than addresing the root problem. Bad government, bad public policy!

  3. As a South Suburban, I am glad to read that things are progressing with the Abraham Lincoln Airport. It’s unfortunate that this economic development engine for the South Suburbs has met uncertain political strife for so many years.

  4. Jackson’s commission is in it’s death throes. He had to kick off half of his members (non-home rule communities) including one of the two (Bensenville) that is bankrolling his whole shebang.

Also, the only community in the vicinity of the airport that is homerule is University Park. The rest can’t be on his commission because they are not home rule!

  6. The one-runway, five-gate South Suburban Airport is not likely to be a major economic engine for much longer than its construction period. Maybe 40 years from now…if it gets another runway or 2 and 20-30 terminals.

And Will County will probably not settle for a 5-4 Will to Cook majority on the ALNAC board, with one of the communities being University Park (the present politics would give an effective 5-4 vote to a Cook County+UP bloc). Or a 16-14 majority of non-Will County communities in the ALNAC general membership (and no, Park Forest’s little dipsy-do into Will County doesn’t count).
