There is a process, created by the legislature and Congress that says you can vote at different times. It makes it harder to count the ballots quickly. I think everyone should take a deep breath, let the process work, and then see what happens. I don’t know if the result will change, but it is important for everything to get counted. If you aren’t willing to wait for the process, then you should eliminate absentee, military, early, and grace period voting. Then, everyone could just vote on election day. Since that won’t work, we wait patiently. The Republican candidates were very classy after the primary. Let’s see if the Democrats can do that now.

Cynic - I’m with you - I did not see the Quinn victory happening any way at all. And I even had a sign up for him. Did not think he would win. Leave it to the GOP to find a way to lose.
Old Timer Dem - I guess you could say IL is now purple because of the congressional delegation, but I think its a very blue-ish purple because at least 2-3 of those US House seats are likely to flip back after the remap. Kirk is probably set for life. But how long do you think JBT wants to be in Springfield? The IL GOP’s entire future is Rootherford?
I could see Hultgren and Kinzinger moving up in the future. They probably have the best chances for bigger opportunities.

Stating the Obvious: Brady is Toast.
However it is absolutely mind numbing that the Democratic party in Illinois, with a 13 billion dollar deficit, a pension system that is totally upside down, a two term Governor who is going to prison, all in a overwhelming republican year was able to hang on in Illinois. All hail the Chicago Machine, this is one for the record books.

Living in Oklahoma - I agree it makes no sense at first glance. There are plenty of independent and Democratic voters who would have preferred not to vote for Quinn and the Democrats, but given what the GOP offered (brady/plummer) they were scared out of their minds not to vote Dem.

It was a change election and the status quo won.
The Congressionals disappointed me, but remember, last time Lipinski and Hastert drew that map to protect the incumbents. If I was Bob Dold and some of the other freshmen, I wouldn’t get too comfortable in DC. There will not be an incumbent protection map this time around. You can take that to the bank.

So in essence, the fear of the change is always greater than the fear of the present, no matter how awful the current situation. It is not as if with Brady as Governor the world would have come to an end. We see now the Dem’s still hold a sizable majority in both chambers. I just do not see this getting any better until we have divided government in this state again. One party rule is always trouble, and we are looking at 12 straight years of it with yesterdays result.

Just to muddy these waters, I hope we don’t make this a story solely of “Red” Downstate versus “Blue” Cook. Yes, Quinn won because of Cook.
But he also collected like 800,000+ votes statewide outside of Cook, too.
I don’t think Brady lost this election just because some of his socially conservative views turned off Cook County suburban voters. He also lost because his socially conservative views turned off some crucial _Downstate_ swing voters. He took positions that skewed a bit too right even for a lot of Downstate moderates.
Meanwhile as many have already commented one of the things most to like about Quinn (and there are plenty of reasons not) is his longstanding commitment to veterans and recognizing the men in uniform, and you’ve gotta think that paid off for him last night as well, in some Downstate constituencies.
So it was definitely more than some kind of Cook - Downstate culture war. In many ways, to echo a previous commentator, Illinois has always been a purple state.

Siriusly-I believe that you are correct. Alot of his social stances can make a 10,000 vote difference. There are probably even moderate Republican votes in that total. Also, the remap will be easier with most of the Congressional delegation republican. Do not have to worry about elemininating your own. This is a win/win.

Interestingly, I did a little analysis comparing Quinn’s and Alexi’s vote totals. Basically, Alexi got about 50,000 less votes in the six north east counties (Lake, Cook, Kane, Will, Dupage, McHenry) than Quinn got.
Or, in other words, it is very possible (or even likely?) that moderate suburbanites (probably women) could stomach voting vote Kirk, but just couldn’t handle voting for Brady.

47 - I agree. TX, FL, NV and AZ will probably gain seats again and we’ll probably lose another one. “Last hired, first fired.” Isn’t that what the teacher unions tell their people when there’s a layoff coming?
Living in OK - I wasn’t saying that people are afraid of change. But Brady isn’t what they wanted. It’s actually pretty simple. Brady is way too conservative for Illinois general election voters. Look at the last three GOP Governors: Ryan, Edgar and Thompson. All of them were social moderates. That’s how you win statewide in Illinois.
Peter Fitzgerald is the only conservative who has ever won statewide, but that was against Carol Mostly Gone. He didn’t even seek a second term.

I can’t wait until the Tea Partiers get to Washington and think that they will control the agenda in the House…the bought and paid for by the corporations Republicans will have to sit them down and give them the lay of the land…take back our country may ass…the country belongs to the corporations, the Feds, and Wall Street folks, that’s why they want to protect business as usual and stymie the Obama agenda for new jobs in a green economy….

Perhaps the best thing for Illinois’s future is that Quinn managed to win without a visible full-court press from the Speaker. Quinn owes some constituencies such as labor - but only to a limited degree. He doesn’t owe big business, or the trial lawyers, or the coal companies, or anyone else. He can govern now and work with The Big Four as someone not beholden to any of ‘em, not even to the Speaker. If you’re an Illinois progressive, that ain’t nothin’.

I am very happy Quinn won. It’s truly a testament to the voters trust in him to select a guy who wants to raise taxes and was the running mate of one of the most disgraced pols in IL history. He survived an unprecedented Republican wave and a horrible economy. I wish him well.
BTW, I’m sure there will soon be a post about the winners and losers ect. but I can’t contain my desire to say we have seen the biggest loser ever in IL politics and his name is Scott Lee Cohen.

Both Macoupin and Rock Island Countis have reported adjustments to their totals. Despite the fact that Brady won both traditionally Democratic counties pretty handily, it appears that the Dem organization did do some groundwork there as what appears to have possibly been early ballots have broken their way.

I was with quinn from the beginning. He just absolutely destroyed brady in debates.This man is smart as hell regardless of the what what media pundits say. Women and union or in other words “the people” decided this election. We recognized the mess the Governor inherited and the excellent job he has done with everyone clamoring how bad he is. Not so this is a very talented, committed man who believes in honesty and transparency. Besides we didnt want to elect arch conservative who wants puppies killed by the dozens!!

I guess the voters chose the guy who stands up for the worker and not the upper 5%. Surprised Brady got as many votes as he got. Information is power when you vote. Most voters have to survive by working. At least the minimum wage will hold steady. And try to take away the health care promised to us and see where that gets you. Vote smart. Vote for the ones that seek to protect what we have, not the ones who want to take what we have away.

@justbabs - Kirk’s old Congressional district only covered about 1/3 of eastern Lake County, the rest was in suburban Cook. Additionally, he usually didn’t win his portion of Lake County, suburban Cook usually brought him to victory. Sorry you’re a bit off on that one.

They’ve also voted to stay the course of making the deficit bigger with no political will to do anything to stop the drive off the side of the cliff - projected deficits for 2011 is $15 billion now. It’s gonna get a LOT WORSE in this state until Chicago gets their heads out of their butts and figures out their way is disaster. I mean really, do they want to get to as bad as Detroit before bouncing the leadership as they did in Michigan?

That argument is bogus no matter who has made it in the past, or who is making it now. The law allows somebody who gets a plurality of the vote (i.e. the most votes) to be the winner. It is what it is. Quit whining and move on.
Also, there is not going to be any revenge. Blagojevich was a psycho. Quinn is not.

I think Brady thought for sure he was going to win and can’t believe he hasn’t. Dragging out the inevitable conclusion really doesn’t help him, I don’t see him catching Quinn.

After the tax increase was rejected by enough Democrats (including Madigan) last year, Quinn flipped over and did what fiscal conservatives wanted. He initiated the process of laying off state workers. He was halted in court via AFSCME. I believe but could be wrong that Quinn tried to change the court venue to Sangamon County so he could get a favorable ruling on AFSCME’s suit.
After Madigan et al. shot down the tax increase, Quinn became flexible and shifted sides by announcing layoffs and helping enact the two-tiered pension, so that’s not the most liberal path he took.
In retrospect, Madigan looks brilliant in not supporting the income tax increase during this anti-government time, but I could be wrong. If Quinn wins, like it appears now, he could so ironically thank Madigan for not supporting the tax increase.
All’s well that could end well in my corner of the world, all things considered. I will have a governor who is now willing to cut costs to save state jobs. Fiscal conservatives got something too, with the two-tiered pension and future savings. AFSCME pushed voting for Quinn, even after he scared the beJesus out of us last year.

Cohen took almost 50,000 in those same counties. While I believe he entered the race to hurt PQ, he is probably the reason PQ won?!

Yes, Dave. I think your observation is correct. I know a lot of women who fit the description exactly. Even my method is not scientific, I believe this was a factor in the vote difference.

I will say I canvassed parts of affluent Lake County yesterday and I saw Kirk and Dold lawn signs everywhere - but very, very few for Brady.
Forget about the Tea Party. Suburban women in Cook probably continue their reign as the true power brokers of Illinois!

I am so happy to be rid of Peraica that I haven’t spent much time even concerned about any of the other results. Sorry for Gianoulios but glad that I won’t have to learn how to spell his name. Glad that Dart won. Hoping he stays and doesn’t run for mayor.

Congresswoman Bean, I am sure right now you are desperate to get your side of the story heard here. Please consider that this was how many of us felt who contacted your office about key issues and got completely blown off. Not very fun, is it? And thoise issues were vastly more important to this great country than your career. No matter how this turns out I hope you gain some empathy and become more willing to listen to the people who you serve and never again completely ignore them. I voted for you to get rid of Crane and yet you became Crane yourself. While watching Legally Blond 2 this weekend and seeing the idealistic Sally Fields who had become corrupted by Washington our whole family said in unison “Melissa Bean!!” if you go back and I hope you don’t please remember how Crane treated you and how you treated the challenger Walsh and get your ideals back and vote your district not Pelosi.

Who was the guy who wrote last week that Brady was already measuring the curtains in the Governor’s Mansion? Well, for all intensive purposes, it’s official now. The Fat Lady HAS sung. Brady’s just covering up his ears and lookin’ the other way. Nice try Bill–time to get over it and move on– as a Downstater, you should know by now that they’ve counted well more than enough chickens (13,000 plus at last count is plenty) which HAVE now been hatched….Maybe Mr. “Curtain Measurer” guy and all of his buddies who always seem to forget that the ONLY “poll” that counts is the one on Election Day should leave him a voice mail of the Fat Lady’s tune–it’s plenty loud and clear…but will Brash Bill persist in his stubborn refusal to listen to it??
