Joanne Sullivan is obviously the best. She runs a tight ship for not just any legislator but the Speaker.
Rep. Ed Sullivan and Sen. John Sullivan should get an honorable mention for best legislators if for no other reason than they co-host the best party of the year with a guy who should be yesterday’s winner - Dave Sullivan. I hope that’s not too many awards for one Caucus.

Best secretary: Beth Hamilton, who was actually my first runner-up for Best Insider. Beth is extremely knowledgeable, helpful, and hard-working, as well as frank.
Best rep: This year has to go to Greg Harris, for successfully spearheading the most significant bipartisan legislation of the year.
Best Senator: Sadly, Senator Bond, who is bright, knowledgeable, and learned his way around the capitol fast. Bond maintained equal footings in the business community and with progressives, making him the perfect shepherd for the Telecom Rewrite - one of 31 bills he was the chief sponsor of that were signed into law. His constituents and the Senate are going to miss his talent. He’s a young guy and great campaigner lost this year only because it was a terrible year for Democrats. But I’ve got a feeling we’re going to be seeing him again, if not on this stage than a bigger one.
Runner-up: Dan Kotowski. Who doesn’t love Dan Kotowski? 37 new laws to his credit, with a fair number of Republican chief sponsors in the House. Tough on crime, but a heart for the less fortunate. Found time to come to Will County to campaign for A.J. — he’ll probably walk precincts for Forby if he asks.

Best Secretary - Beth Hamilton she gets all the crazies that are looking for the bathroom.
Best Senator - John Sullivan fair, smart and easy to talk to he has higher office written all over him
Best Representative - Roger Eddy in a short amount of time has made himself the go to guy in education and now floor leader

Best secretary - I know she’s won before, but I still have to go with Beth Hamilton. Efficient, super friendly and always tells you what you need to know. She’s so good, sometimes talking to her is even more effective than talking to Rep. Lang.
Best State Representative - Kevin McCarthy - I know he has his detractors and certainly the guy is not universally loved, but I really admire the way he has worked his way out of the dog house, taken a hold of a very difficult “third rail” type issue for a Democrat (public employee pension reforms). He’s honest, hard working and a no BS guy.
Best State Senator - Kirk Dillard - one of the smartest peopl and best leaders in the building. He’s loyal, but not overly partisan. If we had more legislators like him, Springfield would be a more effective place.

Best state Rep. - Bill Black. This nomination is a “career” recognition, instead of a snapshot of this year, like Scorsese winning the Oscar for The Departed and not for Raging Bull, Goodfellas, etc. Black knew his job on the floor, knew his job for his district, and with all the drama, real or fake, no one can do it the way Black did. When you leave a void for the body, the caucus, and the district, you win.
Best state Senator - John Cullerton for the simple fact that he kept his caucus tight, fought for his agenda, while doing what is best for the city of Chicago when he can.
On legislative aide / secretary / AA I am taking a pass due in part that although I do have some contact, I have nothing to base one being better than another so it’s unfair to those who do go “above and beyond” for others.

@Willy - I’ll give you Harris/Black if Rich allows ties. In part for Black being the sole downstate Republican to support equal rights, AND his tireless support for education reform.

Secretary - Robin Gragg in Cullerton’s office. She is helpful, funny, and I’ve never seen her have a bad day.
Rep - This is a hard one this year, as many of the reps I really respect have left or are leaving. I’ll go with Joe Lyons. Low key and hardworking, will always tell it to you straight, even if you don’t like the answer.
Senator - Don Harmon. He has become THE mover and shaker in the Senate. Incredibly smart, hardworking and prolific. Has his fingers in every important issue moving through the Senate.

For best Legislative Aide, I have to go with Robert Toledo who is with Senator Steans. He is sweet, always on the ball and will even give you his own lunch if you asked for it.
Best State Senator, hands down, is Dan Kotowski. As someone who worked for him, I can say he is one of the most caring and hardworking people/legislators you will ever meet. He will meet with anyone at anytime and take every one of them seriously.

Right now I like Rep. Greg Harris for the best rep. I lobbied him with a few colleagues last year during the state employee layoff crisis, and he was honest about the budget situation, saying we can’t nickel and dime our way out of the crisis. He voted for legislation that would have helped us guv’mint workers.
My favorite senator is now Dan Rutherford and maybe even Sen. Cullerton. I e-mailed Sen.Rutherford when I did a mass e-mail to Illinois congresspeople in regards to helping state workers, and his office contacted me and even sent me birthday wishes (shallow stuff, I know). I confess that I don’t know Sen. Rutherford’s voting record (he’s not my senator) but was very happy when he voted for civil unions–especially after the Brady mess with creationism and his abortion stance. If I’m not mistaken, Sen. Cullerton wanted to send the National Guard to Chicago to combat violence. I support that.

Best Assistant: There are a lot of good ones. Beth (of course), Kathryn Underwood, Bunny Fourez, Kelly Large, Nicole Edwards, Joanne Sullivan, Carol Shehorn, and I know I’m missing some good ones on the GOP side. My vote goes to Sen. Collins assistant Teresa Jones though. An assistant has three constituencies that often have competing interests and needs -foremost their boss, lobbyists/constituents and visitors, and their co-workers. TJ does an amazing job of keeping her senator happy, being polite and professional to lobbyists who don’t always return the favor and keeping the 1M world spinning.
Best Rep.: It’s got to be Greg Harris this year. Never lost his cool and worked that bill incredibly.
Keep an eye on Mike Zalewski in the future though. He is a staight shooter, hard worker, has been gaining the respect and trust of his peers on both sides and is no dummy. Not a genius either; just smart enough that you’ll listen to what he has to say but not so smart that you feel like you’re on the defensive. He’s an early frontrunner for 2011.
Best Sen.: Gary Dahl. Why not?

Rep: Greg Harris. Showed he’s a “Top Chef” - selected a coalition of wealthy GLBA donors, brought their money to Madigan, mixed and stirred but never to point of boiling, served for a vote when ready. Healthy and delicious.
Sen: Don Harmon. He’s the go-to-guy on state bonding proposals and legislation. Smart, hard working, focused, responsible - all the attributes that people want and need in dire economic times.

Best Assistant - Beth, for all the above reasons.
Best State Rep - Kevin McCarthy deserves it this year for sure. Not afriad to take on the biggest issues and is fair to everyone. Pensions and telecom are not easy issues and he did them both in one year.
Best Senator - I agree above with Rutherford. Kind, open and fair to everyone and smart about policy. But, a little too much info on his facebook postings for sure.

AA - Jody, Rep. Harris and Rep Walker– She works for a man that is another wing so she constantly has to run back and forth, AND she always gets asked about other members since she sits right outside their offices. While this would drive many AAs crazy, she handles this with grace and is never short with people, no easy task. She also always has a smile on her face, no matter what is going on in her life. She was a fabulous committee clerk, and has become an even better AA. If you haven’t met her, try to take the time to, she is an all around great human being and a really hard working AA.
Runner up goes to Robyn Gragg. (Hey Rich, next year perhaps we could do Senate AA and House AA??) She always has a smile on her face, is willing to go above and beyond to help you and most important, she gets to know who you are and genuinely cares.
Representative: Lou Lang. Rep. Lang is always willing to take the time to talk to you, even if he’s on his way out. He’s also one of the only legislators that will go out of his way to speak to a class of students, or at some other type of event in another district, even when that district’s state rep isn’t willing to.
Senator: Sen. Steans. She is truly her own person and still stands for what she believes in. While this can be frustrating at times, you need to respect her for having her beliefs and being willing to stick to them.

This will be hard, but the show must go on despite the defeat of Bruce Dold and Carol Marin in balloting earlier this week.

* Best Illinois state Representative…Art Turner! Had it not been for Ricky slime-ing him up he would be Lt. Gov right now. Art was the best when came to issues like decent housing and wrongful prosecution.
Hon. Men. goes to Billy Black even though he got a little preachy during his requiem. He will be missed. That will be painfully obvious every time RxRon stumbles out off his stool to tell us about being a regular family guy.
* Best Illinois state Senator…let’s give a nod to Lou Viverito. He has done a great job, survived the previous administration and should finish high up in today’s balloting.

Best LA - Sally McDaniel-Smith: Cheerful, bright, grounded, always brings back lunch for her lawyers even if she has to drag a dolly of food from the Old State Capitol to the Speaker’s office.
Best Rep: I’ll second Bill Black for lifetime achievement. The man gives a heck of a floor speech.
Best Senator: Senator Cullerton, he’s done a fine job with his staff and caucus as the new president. There have definitely been some cha-cha-cha-changes for the better since Senator Jones left.

Best AA - Hands down has to go to Shelly from Rep. Sacia’s office. She funny, quick on her feet and most importantly extremely intelligent (great combo between her and Sacia)
Rep. Harris definitely deserves the award this year for everything mentioned above. He did a great job keeping his cool and working to bring it to fruitation
Best Senator - Harmon is definitely one of the hardest working senators. I would also give Millner props - he works with both sides of the aisle, fair, intelligent and hard working

Best state legislative secretary/admin assistant: Amanda Prentice.
She is organized, smart, interesting and gets you the information you need. She also gives you complete confidence that the Reps will see and understand whatever materials they need to see. Others folks just give you the sense that they are making two big piles, one for each rep.
Best Illinois state Representative: Karen Yarbrough
Sharp, visionary, great politician, hard-working, great facilitator of people and hearings, and is completely fluent in a wide range of issues. She is a true humanitarian who has not given up on the thought that the government can help the people, and she works to make it happen.
Best Illinois state Senator: John Cullerton
Widely respected, utterly competent, has good people, and he has good clear legal thinking (as opposed to that kind of fuzzy hysterical legislator thinking). He is keeping the Senate in line in a way that gives people faith that we have good government (as opposed to Madigan who keeps the House in line in such a way that we are sure we have bad government.)

Legislative Aide/Secretary should hands down go to Nancy Beaty (Senator John O. Jones). Nancy has served the Senate Republicans and the State with distinction for 40 years and is retiring at the end of this year. She’s kind & helpful to everyone and it’s been a joy to work with her. So in honor of her retirement, I think it’s only fitting that she get the award this year.

Best Rep-Lisa Dugan. Out in her district almost 24/7, probably the most accessible elected anyone has ever known. And she is relentless in Springfield when there’s an issue someone brings to her that needs to get addressed. She cares more about the job and the people she represents than politics, but she still understands the politics.
Rutherford earned my vote for best Senator when he supported civil unions. That took a lot of courage and he did it because it was the right thing to do. Plus, he’s a nice guy and is always willing to listen. And he named his car.
Runner up: Toi Hutchinson. Respected in Spfld and knows her way around. World class public speaker and passionate about the issues. Plus, she’s wicked smart.

I too feel that the best Secretary/Legislative Aide should go to Nancy Beaty (Sen. John O. Jones). Nancy is a joy to everyone and always ready to lend a helping hand. She is very efficient and has severed 40+ years with the Senate Republicans (that alone says it all). She is always the first one in the office and many times has been one of the last to leave. I vote for NANCY!

Admi Asst. Michelle Hampton from Deumizio’s office. Can find her senator anywhere anytime, never gets rattled no matter how many people are waiting in the office and keeps a smile on her face.
State Rep. Flynn-Currie: Smart, knows the process and not afraid to carry the heavey lifting bills.
State Senator: Don Harmon, takes on the tough issues and not afraid of any group when he needs to take them on.

Best state rep: Kevin McCarthy for sponsoring both pension reform bills and getting them through, despite intense union opposition. Unlike most legislators, he takes on the special interests, is honest about openly voting to raise his pay and does not participate in legislative scholarships.
* Best Senator: John Cullerton for getting controversial bills passed, for holding together his caucus, and for dealing with the minority in a relatively humane way.
* Best secretary: Amanda Prentice (Mendoza/Berrios). Knowledgable, opinionated, energetic, travels with her bosses.

Legislative Assistant Senate - Nancy Beaty has worked for the Senate longer than a current Congressman from Illinois has been alive which speaks to her loyalty. She is friendly yet tough, a necessity when working for a leader.
Legislative Assistant House - Joanne Sullivan for pretty much the same reasons as Nancy Beaty.
Representative - Bill Black speaks and votes for what he feels is right whether you agree with him or not.
Senator - Gary Dahl for too may reasons to list. Dahl donates his salary to charity and he works extremely hard for his district & veterans. You can hear a pin drop on the Floor when he speaks because he is truly that sincere. He is not a politician, simply a public servant that wants to make Illinois a better place to live. If there were more Gary Dahls out there, the world would be a much better place.

Best LA: It’s hard to say who is more on top of things for their members because they’re all so good: Teresa Jones, Katherine Galloway, Roseanne Visintin….so many qualified and deserving candidates here.
Best Rep: Rep. McCarthy took on tough and unenviable issues this year and succeeded
Best Sen: Sen. Koehler, because he genuinely cares. He replaced his desk with a round table because of his egalitarian nature. And, of course, had a hugely successful year.

Best Rep for the year is Greg Harris. His achievment was substantial and it would never have happened without his hard work and smarts. This is his year.
Senate I’ll go with Toi Hutchinson, her speech on the lack of a sense of responsibility among legisltors was one of the better ones I’ve heard in a while.
For secretary I’ll go with Sally (don’t know her last name) on the 2nd floor of the stratton. She’s always pleasent and works hard.

Her institutional knowledge surpasses many staffers age in the most respectful ways.Her dish of Werthers Originals are always as welcoming as she is!!
*Best Representative- Jim Sacia. Great guy who is very brilliant, modest and hardworking.He is a true citizen-legislator.
*Best Senator- Gary Dahl is a few-and-far between legislator who has no agenda but to do what is right for not only the people of his district, but Illinois. He represents exactly what this state is lacking.

* Best state legislative secretary/admin assistant - I have to go with Robin Gragg in Senator Cullerton’s office as well. She’s frank with you, but never mean (in fact, always in a good mood). She has a personality and warmth of a mother — but the toughness too.
* Best Illinois state Representative - Greg Harris - what a tremendous year in bringing equality to Illinois.
* Best Illinois state Senator - Dave Koehler - He’s articulate, compassionate, and always honest. His Springfield and Pekin office have been responsive to any family or friends I’ve directed to each. He was unopposed this year for one simple fact: there is no one better to represent the 46th District. Also, kudos to him on a civil unions victory!

Bestlegis. staffer - Joann Sullivan - always keeps her cool under the most intense circumstances and is always kind.
Best house member - Elaine Nekritz - one of the last remaining thoughtful, not-phased-by big corporate $$. She does her own thing & I respect that very much.
Best state senator - tie between Dave Koehler and Don Harmon. Koehler is very thoughtful and listens to people. Don gets things done & is always ready to be helpful when he can. Kudos to them!

Best Legislative Assistant - Nancy Beaty defines the meaning of commitment. She has worked tirelessly for Senate Republicans (35 years) for a total of almost 40 years with the State. She will retire at the end of the year and the impact that she has had on those she has worked with cannot be summed up in just a few words. Nancy Beaty is deserving of this award because of her dedication to the State, the Senators she worked for, and the constituents of Illinois.

Best LA - Nancy Beaty is the best I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen many. Stan Weaver, Pate, Frank Watson, John Jones. She always works for the big hitters and gets the job done with grace. Early in and late out has been her M.O. for years. If there are any better I’ve never met them.
Best Rep - Frank Mautino. Manages to maintain the Speaker’s trust while also working with people of all political circles. A trustworthy politician.
Best Senator - Maybe it’s the area, but I agree with those who like Gary Dahl. Senator Everyman. Didn’t need the Senate. The Senate needed him. Doesn’t take the pay and doesn’t have an ego.

Leg. Sec/AA: I don’t spend a lot of time in Springfield, so I can’t name very many, but, as a whole, they should each get an award for knowing their member well and treating the public respectfully. I come down to Springfield a couple of times a year and will pop around to various offices to lobby for specific bills. I have never been treated poorly and I appreciate that.
State Rep: I think it has to go to Bill Black. He is a great advocate for the issues in which he believes and for his caucus. When listening to the live feed from the House, it’s the Bill Black moments that wake me up. His mixture of righteous indignation, wit, logic, passion, and volume are the payoff for anyone willing to listen to endless droning debate.
Sate Sen: Dave Koehler. He has shown himself to be an independent voice as well as a person of real integrity. He welcomes you into his office (with a table not a desk) and gives his undivided attention. He does not hedge to keep people happy, he says what he plans to do and why he plans to do it. And…he’s willing to personally fight crime!

Best Senator- I’d have to say Dan Kotowski. Hes a very caring man, hard working legislator, and not afraid to stand strong for what he believes in.
Best Rep- Hands Down, Greg Harris. He’s a champion on civil rights and his bi-partisan approach to passing bills makes him an extremely effective legislator. My hero.
Best LA- Although there are so many great ones, I’d have to say Robert Toledo(Senator Steans). Robert always has a smile one his face. He’s very knowledgeable of the Senator’s legislation and can almost always answer my questions, saving me time as well as Senator Steans.

Best LA: Nancy Beaty has proven her excellence in while working for several key Senators, including Senate Republican Leader Pate Philip and Stan Weaver.
Best Senator: Matt Murphy. He is the bright star in the Senate Republican Caucus and well respected by both sides of the aisle.
Best Rep: Bill Black is my choice as well for all of the above reasons.

Many have voted for Gary Dahl as best Senator. Certainly can’t argue with that nomination. He was in it for all the right reasons, to make Illinois a better place to live, work and have a business. He’ll be missed.
Best Rep. is probably Bill Black for his many years of commitment to the instituion and willingness to learn the issues and stand up for his district and all of downstate. He could also see both sides of an argument better than nearly any in recent history.
Best LA is Nancy Beaty. She has worked for some of the most influencial members of the last 40 years in the State House. Always courteous and accomodating while being honest and direct.

Definitely Nancy Beaty for secretary, no question. Not only is she my mom, I’ve watched her do her work tirelessly and with a professionalism and dedication that is unmatched for decades! Through other circles I’m in, she is known around the state on both sides of the aisle for her efforts and personality and has been for some time. I’m certain there are many exceptional secretaries at the Capitol, but they will be very hard-pressed to reach the bar that she’s set over the years.

Best Rep: I’ll go with Bill Black as well. He genuinely cares and has kept an open mind on many tough issues. And what better way to cap off a career than with a GH?
Best Sen: Dave Koehler, for so many reasons, though many have been covered already above me. His constituent services team is a well-oiled machine and is often used as a model for other members of the General Assembly. Plus, his office is the best place in the Capitol for a free cookie!
Best LA: Roseann Visintin in Koehler’s office because she hands out the aforementioned cookies. That, and she’s accessible, willing to chat/help at all times, and because she’s had plenty of work to do with Koehler having such a big year in terms of legislation. Plus, her dry, sarcastic nature is a great remedy for a long day. And she hands out cookies. Did I mention that?

Best LA - Kathrine Galloway. She keeps Harmon on track, is unflapable and whip-smart.
Best Rep - Nekritz. Fair, tough, smart, moral. What else could you want in a leader?
Best Senator - Harmon. Absolutely tireless. Willing to stick with bills when they get really complicated. The one guy in leadership who understands bills entirely before voting on them. Absolutely the best in that chamber.

Senator Dahl - How many others donate their entire salary? He also left on his terms, he embodies the definition of a “citizen legislator.”
Representative Eddy - A bipartisan in every sense of the word. He represents a conservative area but has the ability to compromise with Chicago-area members.
Legislative Aide - Nancy Beaty - Nancy has served a long and distinguished list of Senators. To hear her stories one can understand that both sides of the aisle actually cooperated with each other. She is a real public servant.

Theresa Jones for legislative assistant–she is friendly, helpful, highly competent, and a lovely person overall.
Dan Kotowski for State Senator–how could you not love him?
Greg Harris for State Rep–he is informed, pro-active, for all the right causes, and pretty much just a winner right about now.

Senate Aide: Nancy Beaty is the best. She has valiantly served Pate, Stan Weaver and Frank Watson. Not an easy job.
House Aide: Joanne Sullivan for the same reasons with Madigan.
Rep: Greg Harris for the reasons stated by others.
Sen: Don Harmon is a true work horse.

Legislative assistant- Judy (Maggie Crotty’s office). She has a great sense of humor and knows her way around the system very well.
Representative- Marlow Colvin. He’s always on his game, not afraid to stand up and speak his mind, and does a very good job for his district and caucus.
Senator- Kirk Dillard. He is a moderate and willing to break with the party when they go off the deep end -i.e. the RTA bailout vote 2 years ago, is an education proponent, and probably should have been Governor.

Best Legislative Assistant - Nancy Beaty (Senate Republicans). Hardworking, always pleasant no matter the circumstance, 4o years of dedicated service, which most of us will never come close to says it all!

Once again, my own personal choices…
* Best state legislative secretary/admin assistant: I love them all. Truly, I do. Every, single one. They work hard for low pay (particularly during the Blagojevich years) and the perks from the old days are mostly gone. I depend on Kristen from Skip’s office more than anyone, however, so I’ll go with her. But that should in no way diminish my respect for all.
* Best Illinois state Representative: Rep. Greg Harris grew into adulthood this year. He’s always been a good legislator. This year, he turned into a great one. Whether you agree with his civil unions bill or not, he made it happen and it wasn’t easy.
* Best Illinois state Senator: Toi Hutchinson has made a bigger impact as a freshman than anyone I’ve seen in a very long while.

Best state legislative secretary/admin assistant: How do you choose? I don’t think I’ve ever met one who wasn’t on top of his or her game. Since I have to choose, though, I’m going to also say Robin Gragg. I don’t know if she even knows how to be in a bad mood and is always pleasant no matter how much that phone is ringing or people are trying to figure out where they need to be.
Best Illinois State Representative: I work more with the Senate than the House, but I would say Rep. Nekritz. Independent, smart, and not afraid to say - and vote - what she feels is right, even if it’s not the party line, but still willing to listen to all sides, even if she doesn’t ultimately agree with you.
Best Illinois State Senator: It’s a tough choice in my mind between Sens. Harmon and Koehler, but I’m going to have to go with Koehler. He’s a hard worker and does seem to have an outstanding constituent services operation (I am not a constituent, but have worked with them). He follows a wide range of issues and stays on top of what’s going on. His passion and commitment also can’t be topped.

Best Rep - I like the votes for Harris and were it not for one consideration, I’d give it to him. John Bradley is awesome - intelligent, down to earth, saavy with charisma to spare and the last best downstate hope for next speaker. All that said, I have to go with Bill Black for the lifetime achievement. Say what you will about the theatrics (and I’ve said everything from hilarious to shut the *** up), but he was a fair-minded pragmatist, something in short supply on the R side of the aisle.
Best Sen- I’m going with Don Harmon. Lots of bevy lifting, incredibly smart, and a former House Dem staff member to boot.

Senator Harmon. In addition to smart, savvy, hardworking, etc.; he strikes the perfect balance between standing on principle and working within the system to get things accomplished. No one else puts as many points on the board — quietly, and behind the scenes. The only person in recent memory who had enough savvy to use power in Springfield for good was a skinny guy from the South Side, name of Barack Obama.

Best Legislative Secretary: You have to understand that these gatekeepers do a lot of difficult work for very, very, very difficult and arrogant people. So, to an extent, they all deserve a horseshoe (either award, or just a “sandwich.”
Marcia Simmons with Sen. Tony Munoz is deserving of this prize. She knows how to manuever through the important things, advance her Senator’s agenda with constituents and understands when it’s neccessary to let the unimportant rot in a corner. She works well with staff, lobbyists and the public. She knows that her job and her work doesnt need to be known…a rare thing in this town.
Best Senator: You have to consider accomplishments at the statehouse via bills and negotiations, and also political success and attentiveness to the public. Some lawmakers are really good at one element, some are good at two. Few are good at virtually every element. So, it’s tough to determine….
However, I would vote for Mike Noland….just kidding.
Really, it’d be Donne Trotter. He’s a swift fella and easy going. He knows when to be an attack dog for his political party and knows when to hold out for his constituency. He understands the budget and relishes the fact that self-assured wonks come in and out of his office with an ease that they’ve just bamboozeled another disinterested Chicago Democrat. The man knows how to relax and how to gut you with a splintered 2×4. He’s the Deputy Dean of the Senate behind only months Cullerton. But he takes care of his constituents and his interests every time. And, although he’s best known for his trademark bowties, he’s also known for his trademark quiet approach until he’s poked with a stick enough. Gotta love that guy.
Best State Rep: same difficult criteria as the senate… Except they all get sooo lost to me.
However, Bill Black probably gets it…and not for all the other non-admitted “he’s retireing” accolades.
Face it, the guy is an institution. Yes, his speeches were funny. Yes, he was the flag waver for the minority. Yes, he got himself attention. And on and on and on. However, while he deserves the award for all of the things folks have said, he deserves it even more for his actions late in his career.
Take the pension borrowing vote and the civil unions vote. “The right thing.” Can’t be punished if you’re not coming back, can you?
Bill Black showed us a rare thing that doesnt get exposed much: every now and again, elected legislators get to say “up yours” to the pundits, the polls and their political party based on what is the right thing to do…or at least the best option.
Perhaps other outgoing folks think they have careers in the next two years, Bill Black either didnt or he’s running on his record in the future.
Bill proved that, in the end, it’s not the issues or the control of his party “leader” that tie the House Minority in knots, it’s the Speaker’s molestation of the process and the willingness to bludgen compromising republicans in the next campaign.
He leaves with dignity. But he leaves because he couldnt succeed in the goal to inject care in the cold, robotic heart of “he who’s name should not be mentioned.”

Beth Hamilton is a great choice. She can get her work done numerous people camped out in her office while making folks feel welcome. She has a great personality and million dollar smile.
Best Illinois state Representative
Mautino or Nektritz — with a slight edge going to Mautino. Even though he is in leadership, he still truly represents his district. You can trust him and he knows how to get the job done. Nekritz is bright, hard-working, honest and does things for the right reason.
Best Illinois state Senator: Dan Kotowski is an incredible team player with an unbeatable work ethic. His contributions to other elected officials’ campaigns are selfless, many and without ego. Add to that he is smart, trustworthy and capable.

I have to give it to you for LA. Those folks/gals are all great. The ladies in Skip’s office are the best.
Best Rep: Harris. No questions. Black should get a lifetime award. There are others who have shown grit. But this is Harrris’ year. Civil unions is a big win. But he is also sharp on the budget and social services. Don’t sleep on him just because he was the go-to on civil unions.
Best Senator: This is tough. I have to say Harmon and Kotowski are getting a lot of dap. They’re overrated. Toi W. has stepped-up. Kirk Dillard may have been governor. Cullerton needs credit for how he has handled the majority. But I think Rutherford gets the nod. He won statewide office (against the trend) and can speak his own mind. The upper chamber has a lot of people who stand-out, but just a few who step-up.

For Senator, I have to go with Cullerton. He got his chamber to address the #1 problem in state government right now, the need to modernize our revenues system. Too bad the House did not go along, for the sake of redistricting.
For Rep, I concur with Bill Black as a Life Achievement gesture. But Speaker Madigan IS the entire House, and has to be the consensus winner.
Assistant: most are professional and nice, I love Beth but she herself would probably say many others are equally deserving. We don’t see how many keep disorganized legislators going, and how many in the House have wildly different personalities of bosses as their two masters (are Jack Franks and Mary Flowers still sharing an assistant?).
