* I attended Hanover High School for a year back in the 1970s. The school, located in the northwestern corner of the state, had an unofficial fight song which we’d sing at every basketball game (the school killed off football right after I got there because of budget cuts). The ditty was sung to the Notre Dame fight song and when a class’ name was uttered, all those in attendance from that class would stand up and shout “Freshmen!” or “Seniors!” or whatever. Even the teachers got into the act…
Beer, beer for Hanover High
You bring the whiskey, I’ll bring the rye
Send the freshmen out for gin
And don’t let a sober sophomore in
Juniors never stagger
Seniors never fall
Teachers sober up on wood alcohol
Send the royal faculty right back to the bar for more[Repeat]
The high school band even played it when they were at the games.
Times sure have changed. Kids would probably get expelled for singing that song today, and no way would any teachers join in.
* Anyway, I told you that story as a prelude to sharing this must-watch video made by students at Oak Park and River Forest High School. The kids have produced what can only be described as the best high school booster video ever…
In my opinion, it’s better than the original, but I do have to wonder what Gov. Pat Quinn would think of the repeated disses of his cherished alma mater Fenwick High.

And incidentally — my mom’s high school sang the “Hanover” song back in Kentucky in the early 1950s. It’s a classic.

Quinn and his brother, the coach, are busy trying to figure how to break their years-long drought against the Huskie boys basketball team (hint: the orange ball goes in the cyclinder).
Actually, it’s a pretty good-natured rivalry between two old, excellent schools four-blocks apart and both very diverse racially and economically.
When they get together to play ball at the Field House, the place is packed, raucous, but peaceful: no wanding, no metal detectors. Sadly, that’s not the case everywhere, not only in the city, but the suburbs, too.
The only violence I ever saw was unintentional. Two cheerleaders, a Friar and a Huskie, doing a “back-flip-off” across the length of the court (amazing!) during a timeout and colliding in mid-air at mid-court.

We sang a very similar unofficial fight song at my east coast Catholic High School. The only difference was in last line: “While our royal faculty lie drunk on the barroom floor.” I’m fairly certain it was in reference to our lay-teachers, the nuns could drink us all under the table
The OPRFHS video is fantastic…. Teach me how to huskie, indeed!

It’s a cool effort from HS kids. Though it is at times a shot-for-shot homage to the UW band’s “Teach me how to Bucky.”

well, nice enough video but if it is derivative of Bucky, then not so cool. we all live in the land of Glee, which is fine enough. I long for anyone, high school kids included,to produce musical art that is different than the usual land we all live in ….rap. signed, not an alum of any schools mentioned.
p.s. school spirit is cool, but this is from a public school and it seems like a recruiting video. how do they use the video?

(I never know if riffing is a ripoff, so that’s my term for whatever these people are doing ) of a rap tune “Teach me how to
Dougie” same beat, bouncy moves, no mascot and minus the teachers bouncing to rap to prove they are cool. shades of the late ’60s when teachers tried to reach out to the hippie kids.
