Another classic Quinn ramble

Posted in:

* We had a lot of fun with Gov. Pat Quinn’s rambling ways during the campaign. He’s the jam band governor, this guy. He ought to tour with The String Cheese Incident. Sheila Simon could play banjo. Maybe she could do even better than the $500 she made last year picking and grinning.

Anyway, in our latest edition chronicling the governor’s meandering ways, Gov. Quinn extols the virtues (and the long Illinois history) of the “miracle” soybean. From there, he segues into the University of Illinois and then to China, back to the U of I, then back to China.

He even has mic problems at one point, but keeps right on going. Have a listen

* Meanwhile, you should also take a look at Rahm Emanuel defending himself for not appearing at community forums with the other mayoral candidates. It’s no big deal, he says, because, among other things, he’s been to 30 grocery stores

  1. just the other day I too found myself signing a soybean exportation contract and wondered aloud, Is this the biggest ever? Well, thanks to Gov. Pat Quinn I now know it wasn’t.
Kudos to you SoyBoy! Kudos to you.

  2. Rahm’s campaign is high profile “talking to voters”…better would be “listening to voters” or discussing with voters. However, I think most voters understand the fix is in among the power elite that Rambo is their candidate. The question remains whether the City of Broad Shoulders is ready to embrace Ballerina Boy.

  3. oh come on, Quinn’s not that bad in that clip.

  4. js, you’ve become inured. That’s not healthy.

  5. Its going to be a long 4 years. The main problem is that he does not realize he has a focus problem. It shows how his mind works and why too often he mis-remembers.

  6. Reporter: “Gov.Quinn what steps are you taking to make the Chinese feel more at home when they visit Illinois.”

PQ: “Well we are taking steps to make them feel comfortable. For example during the dinner tonight we will be periodically bringing state employees out and we will beat them for a short peiod of time for entertainment while we dine. This will accomplish two things, it will make Hu happy and also the Illinois taxpayers ….. Oh, and I also wanted to add that since I have done the most of any Governor to promote the export of agriculture products, and also have done the most to clean up the rivers of the Land of Lincoln by ridding them of Asian Carp,… you know this is what we like to call the circle of life when we get species from another area of the globe and they become a problem and then we send them back where we got them…… Oh and since I have done this in conjunction with bringing jobs to our State with the help of the Chinese Government I hereby proclaim that I will be forever known as KOI SOY BOY.”

  7. wow, Chicago looks like it is not waking up to a better second choice to Rahm and that is sad. his performance on that
video is pitiful. hey Rahm, Rose garden strategy is for a rerun for the presidency. oh, wait, maybe you think you are still there….

Comment by amalia Friday, Jan 21, 11 @ 11:57 am

  8. oh come on now, I’m not inured. I think Quinn is a goof on many levels. Just don’t think that particular clip is so bad. Learned some fun facts about soybeans even. Just sayin’.

  9. Inured and in denial. Dangerous combo, kid. lol

Comment by Rich Miller Friday, Jan 21, 11 @ 12:03 pm

  10. @ Irish,

Put that in a sandwich. You could call it the Koi Soy Po Boy.

Comment by How Ironic Friday, Jan 21, 11 @ 12:05 pm

  11. How Ironic, if Jimmy John’s sold that sandwich last month with sprouts on it, you could have a Koi Soy Po Boy Certiorari.

    Or something…

  12. This reminds me of an old bit that was a spoof on Dragnet. The spoof was called ” The copper clapper caper.”

Comment by Irish Friday, Jan 21, 11 @ 12:15 pm

  13. Rich, I think you’re just anti soybean. LOL

Alright, I’ve quibbled enough on this one.

Comment by just sayin' Friday, Jan 21, 11 @ 12:16 pm

  14. js, I wasn’t too fond of them when I was a child. You ever walk beans in the hot sun? It’s a brutal monotony that few could stand.

Comment by Rich Miller Friday, Jan 21, 11 @ 12:19 pm

  15. AND if that were in a sandwich served in Hawaii with sides it would be the KOI SOY POI BOY.

Comment by Irish Friday, Jan 21, 11 @ 12:23 pm

  16. Soybean diplomacy!

The good ol’ Gov. is a bit like those Bing commercials regarding search engine overload.

“at the Shedd Aquarium they have a soybean roof” transitions directly into “sky’s the limit for soybeans” rolls into “we all know China is the largest country, populous country on earth, there’s a lot of mouths to feed there and there’s a lot of value added we can benefit from” which naturally leads to comments about ADM’s multi-million dollar gift to U of I.

Perhaps he’s just some sort of genius savant we don’t fully appreciate?

  18. Unemployment rates for IL just released.

IL UE rate to 9.3 in Dec. 2010.

WI UE rate drops from 7.6 to 7.5 according to 1/20 press release.

Nothing on IN yet that I see.

  19. “The Jamband Governor” love it!

Comment by Officer McNulty Friday, Jan 21, 11 @ 12:35 pm

  20. Too bad Quinnie isn’t just a little more famous beyond our own state. His rambling would make a GOLDEN skit series on SNL.

Comment by Responsa Friday, Jan 21, 11 @ 12:37 pm

  21. “Lord I was born a Rambling Man”… should be Quinn’s theme song. Rahm can sing back up.

As long as the JewelOsco - L stop strategy is working for Rahm, he’s not going to change up.

===The question remains whether the City of Broad Shoulders is ready to embrace Ballerina Boy.===

Yes, because a world class city may not be ready for a mayor who *gasp* used to take ballet.

Comment by SR Friday, Jan 21, 11 @ 12:38 pm

  22. Well … at least people can’t accuse Quinn of reading material written by someone else off of a teleprompter!

Comment by Transplant Friday, Jan 21, 11 @ 12:50 pm

  23. I’m with “Just Sayin’”

Quinn isn’t that bad in this clip. I’ve hear him ramble and this is tolerable to easy listening…. and informative.

Comment by Rich Miller Friday, Jan 21, 11 @ 1:06 pm

  26. Rich,
You should start a separate site cataloging Quinn’s rambles by topic. Call it Quinnepedia.

Your followers could offer updates and clarifications. Over the next four years we could dramatically change the face of reference materials online.

  27. I would have a lot more respect for Ramuel if he had visited 31 grocery stores. But, why?

Comment by Joe from Joliet Friday, Jan 21, 11 @ 1:29 pm

  28. Why is Emanuel limiting himself to diners, groceries and el stops? Once he hits the pool rooms, steam baths, bowling alleys and dance studios, the election is in the bag!

BTW, whatever happened to campaigning in taverns and buying the constituents a round? I do not see Rahm reaching into his deep pockets to splurge for drinks.

Ahaha Steve Martin! I had forgotten all about that. Sheila on banjo — brilliant. Maybe Rahm can throw in an interpretive dance.

  30. @ S

    Source please?

    Can’t find Illinois numbers.

Only source i saw for wisconsin said while their unemployment rate dropped, the real number to watch — private sector jobs — dropped for the third straight month.

  31. My ears are burnin’ from folks complaining about Rahm skipping the SOAR event.

1,400 city residents who would like to be his constituents were not impressed by his no-show.

  32. Rich, yep, I’ve walked soybeans, hacking out giant jimson weeds and other unwanted invaders.

What doesn’t destroy us only makes us stronger. ;)

  35. @YDD: Illinois unemployment rate fell again in December even as more people felt encouraged about their job prospects and entered the labor force to look for work. The seasonally adjusted rate fell for the ninth consecutive month, dropping -0.3 to 9.3 percent, according to preliminary estimates released today by IDES. http://www.ides.state.il.us/news/default.asp
