* Gov. Pat Quinn contradicted House Speaker Michael Madigan today. Madigan said earlier in the week that Quinn had asked him to pass another lump sum budget. But Quinn said today that he did not ask Madigan for that.
“That really isn’t true,” Quinn said, claiming that he told Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton that “if they want to do” a lump sum budget, then, “OK, I’ll do that.” Listen…
Quinn also said that when the General Assembly proposes cuts to education, as the House has done with its $200 million cut to schools, it should be seen as an “alarm bell, and we have to look very carefully at their proposal.”
* The governor was also asked about yesterday’s federal judge’s ruling which tossed out a provision in the McCormick Place reform law that eliminated some union contract rules at the facility.
“It wasn’t exactly a surprise,” Quinn said, pointing out that the had used his amendatory veto power on the legislation. “I thought there were some shortcomings in that bill,” Quinn said, but noted that the General Assembly “had decided to plow ahead” by overriding his AV.
But Quinn’s AV had nothing to do with yesterday’s judicial ruling. He never touched the language which was so hotly opposed by the Teamsters and Carpenters unions. That disputed language was in a new chapter created by the General Assembly (70 ILCS 210/5.4). Nothing in the AV referred to that section of the bill, except for one provision by Quinn that effectively killed off two small unions (on behalf of the Teamsters and Carpenters).

Quinn’s contradicting himself, isn’t he? He brings up the subject.

You can take the boy out of third grade, but you can’t always take the third grade mentality out of the boy.
The level of statesmanship we’re getting from the top Democrats in Illinois is frightening. Maybe they can settle it on the playlot at recess.

Yeah; rights are rights & I generally support organized labor: but…..
If the folks in the Chi unions think this is a winning position, they are going to be in for a shock when there aren’t any McCromick place union jobs left; when all the trade shows go elsewhere.
What are they thinking?
Again: the pie is shrinking; everyone needs to understand that every one of us gets a smaller piece.
Be more competitive and maybe we’ll all get larger pieces of the pie.

OK, then how about putting limits on contractor markups from savings realized on those union cutbacks?
They won’t do that, of course, because the two contractors that control just about every big convention in this country wouldn’t stand for it. This wasn’t as much about lowering prices as it was, in my opinion, about increasing profits for those two contractors.

OK Rich, I agree with you, we should put limits on the 2 contractors that control most of the shows in the country. So what do we do if they don’t buy it and take there shows somewhere else?

downhereforyears, that’s the whole problem with this crazy situation. It’s really about two extremely powerful companies bigfooting working people. Not good.

The two contractors who control most of the shows in the country remind me of the classic answer to the classic question: Where does the gorilla sit? Answer: Anywhere it wants.
If they are that powerful, then someone with anti-trust powers should step in. Otherwise, you grin and deal with it.
