All tied up

* The White Sox won last night, evening out the Crosstown Classic at one game apiece

It was Konerko leading the way again with another home run, his fifth in as many games.

Konerko led off the second inning against Matt Garza with the homer, his 21st of the season, giving the Sox a 1-0 lead. They had a 2-0 lead before Cubs first baseman Carlos Pena homered for a second straight game, off Mark Buehrle in the fifth, to make it 2-1 before the nearly two-hour rain delay.

The Cubs tied the score when play resumed. They had two men on in the sixth, and Reed Johnson scored from third on Aramis Ramirez’s sacrifice fly off Jesse Crain (3-2).

But the Sox went ahead for good in the seventh. Alexei Ramirez hit a double off Jeff Samardzija (5-3) and scored on a sacrifice fly by Brent Morel.

Trash talk time. Have at it.

  2. Headed to the ballgame tonight. Let’s hope the White Sox make it 17 straight winning series versus NL teams.

So much for the “Junior Circuit”

  3. Just enjoy Ozzie’s last year as much as possible, Sox fans. You won’t have him to kick around after he takes the Marlin’s job.

  4. Can’t say I watched the Sox/Cubs last night. I was too flabbergasted at watching the Cardinals bullpen. Good luck, Sox!

  5. CO CUBS, beat the sux!! Thoughts, but Ozzie will still have catchers mask’s to kick around!!

  6. Enjoy Ozzie? Not until he stops playing Pierre. Ozzie I love ya and thanks for the World Championship but the act has grown old and you refuse to play to your park. Goodbye and take your crazy family too.

  7. Ya Stones, keep beating up on on the NL while you lose to every team in your division. 3 runs in 32 innings against the Twins.

  8. All Twins fans should leave right now.

  10. Does anyone remember when the Interleague Games between the Cubs and the White Sox used to be standing room only events? While the two games have drawn passably respectable crowds, there were plenty of good seats still available.

Is it the economy or do the fans appreciate that both of the teams appear to be going nowhere fast?

    The thrill is gone apparently.

  14. Konerko is having an MVP year. He’s a treasure; a good guy who does things the right way.

Jeez, if Dunn or Rios could hit the broad side of a barn with a banjo, the Sox would smoke the Tigers.

I think MLB overplayed its hand by scheduling these games during the week. Chicagoans might pack the Cell on a weekend, but on a Tuesday night? That’s just too much to ask.

  22. I love how the Trib gets all bi-sox-ual during this series.

Comment by radio guy Wednesday, Jun 22, 11 @ 10:42 am

  23. Good game by the Sox last night, and yes, Kornerko is having a heck of a season. Did anyone else notice how Buehrle, normally a very quick worker on the mound, seemed to slow it down when the Cubs had runners on first and third and the storm was approaching? He sure looked like he was out of gas and stalling for the rain delay.

Whatever, I’m pretty good at finding excuses for the Cubs’ horrible play, so take it for what it’s worth. I tip my cap to the Sox and we’ll see what happens today.

Now maybe the Blago jury can wrap it up.

  24. –I think MLB overplayed its hand by scheduling these games during the week.–

I think the baseball market peaked and is sliding down. Seriously, $55 for a bleacher seat at Cominskey?

They’re giving away Cubs tickets on EBay. I was in New York last month for a wedding and got tickets for a Yankees/Red Sox game at face value.

The market is way different than just a couple of years ago.

They’d be sold out if it were at Wrigley. Just saying.

  26. –They’d be sold out if it were at Wrigley. Just saying.–

I’m not so sure. The Cubs claimed they broke their 3-game series attendance record against the Yankees last week. Yet I saw plenty of empty seats in the bleachers on TV.

Comment by wordslinger Wednesday, Jun 22, 11 @ 11:04 am

  27. @Wordslinger,

You cannot judge by empty seats any longer. Both leagues now count ticket sales in attendance rather than actual turnstile clicks. For a time, the AL counted ticket sales for attendance purposes while the NL retained the old practice of only counting those spectators who actually entered the stadium towards attendance. Eventually, the NL dropped its custom and began relying upon tickets sold to calculate attendance. There are plenty of empty seats for sold out games when the scalpers erred and loaded up tickets that they could not move.

I based my previous comment on the announcement that the attendance at the Monday night game was 36,000 and something. I think that US Celluar currently holds about 44,000 or so.

  28. I think trash talking by either team’s fanbase at this point would be somewhat laughable. Gotta accomplish something to be able to talk trash.

  29. Cubs fans, Paul Konerko is what a real hero looks like. hits home runs, is humble, captain of the team, leader of the pack. your side still pines away for Corky.

  30. So….only a separate thread when the Sox beat the Cubs?

Comment by Vote Quimby! Wednesday, Jun 22, 11 @ 11:25 am

  31. Missed everything after the Sox ground crew struggled to put on the infield tarp when they delayed the game. My power then went out (it is still out) and I read about it this morning.

The empty seats at ball parks can be tied into the poor economy and constantly increasing ticket prices. In other years, not only would have every ticket been sold, but you wouldn’t see any empty seats from those who chose not to go to the park who had tickets, or scalpers who couldn’t sell them.

The Sox are TIED this series with the Cubs? Shouldn’t the White Sox be just a little ASHAMED of this fact? :-)

  37. I was there last night. I am glad I stayed until the end. I am glad they won, and the rain delay did not cancel the game.

When the Cubs play the Sox, it’s cheering on both sides. It’s unlike the rest of the games at the Cell where it’s just one sided. When the Cubs hit a home run, all the people in Blue stand up and cheer.

Putting in a Pitch hitter for the DH? Did they pay too much for Adam Dunn? Thoughts?

The Cubs fans booed Paulie (Konerko) and AJ (Pierzinski)everytime they were at bat. Us Sox fans weren’t happy when they intentionally walked Paulie, we made a lot of noise. It’s nice to go to one Crosstown game a year, lots of energy, lots of noise. But I have only done it on the South Side Turf. I wonder how friendly things are up North for the SouthSiders?

The grounds crew did a fantanstic job. They almost lost the tarp, but they all ran like crazy to the middle of center field and all came back out riding something they parked on the tarp.

Comment by 3rd Generation Chicago Native Wednesday, Jun 22, 11 @ 1:15 pm

  38. Have you heard that the Cubs are changing their playing surface over the All Star Break — to paper?

That’s because they always look good on paper, but lousy on grass.
