Report: Ald. Beale may run against Jackson, but there may be something else going on

Posted in:

* Roll Call reports that Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr. might have another primary opponent. This time, an African-American

City Alderman Anthony Beale (D) is also considering running against Jackson, according to two Chicago-area Democratic sources.

Beale didn’t deny his interest in a Congressional bid in a statement passed on by his spokeswoman Monday.

“I’m focused on doing the best job I can as Alderman of the 9th ward,” Beale said. […]

“He’s [Jackson] playing with an enormous hornet’s nest here, and he’s inviting a third party into the race,” one Chicago Democratic insider said. “What has brought all this to the forefront is his own doing.”

The two men have been allies for a while, but they’ve reportedly had a personal falling out lately.

From what I can gather, Beale offered not long ago to support former US Rep. Debbie Halvorson against Jackson. Apparently, that’s been circulating around the South Side for several days. So, we may finally be getting to the bottom of Jackson’s self-destructive tantrum over the new district map.

5th Ward Ald. Leslie Hairston, who voted against the disastrous parking meter deal, is also being talked up as a possible Jackson opponent.

It goes without saying that a credible African-American opponent for Jackson would be big trouble for the incumbent, whether or not Halvorson stays in the race.

Stay tuned, campers.

  1. It’s been a long strange trip for Trips the last few years. He thought he would be a Senator in the majority at this point. Nothing worse than being a rep in the minority.

  2. Yeah, so about 90% of what I think about the headline can’t be said here, so let’s just say this could get very messy. And frankly I don’t need to be entertained that badly so let’s just hope everyone sorts themselves out here.

  3. ===And frankly I don’t need to be entertained that badly ===

    Me neither. Let’s keep it clean, people.

  4. Rarely in politics has someone who was given so much, frittered it away so effortlessly and so obviously and so publicly as has JJJ.

  5. Maybe I’m overshooting the moon, but such an entry by Mr. Beale could elevate Debbie Halvorson to the winner’s circle. Mr. Beale could syphon off enough of the minority vote to put a serious dent in JJJ’s showing, thus allowing Debbie to pull out a squeaker.

  6. ===Maybe I’m overshooting the moon===

    You are not.

    You are right on the money here. JJJ had so much, but fell to the 2nd District curse. Remember Gus Savage, then Mel Reynolds, now JJJ. Not a good record for the 2nd.

  8. ===but fell to the 2nd District curse===

    His problems have very little to do with the district, other than the fact that he, like his predecessors, thought they were invincible.

  9. I have a simple question since 99% of the people here are a lot more knowledgeable then me regarding this political issue. My question is will the Peotone/Will County conservatives in this new district be courted by any democratic candidate or will the republican vote not be relevant, and the democratic candidates will just campaign to their base ?
    - Thanks

  10. Doubledown
    Quinn carried the district 78.6% to 21.4% over Brady. The Will County conservatives are pretty buried in that district.

  11. The Strong Dems in this district break 65/30 Black to White. I think a credible Af Am candidate would have a much better shot than Debbie, especially with the Blue Dog record she racked up when she was in the House. The Will County/Kankakee portions of this district do not factor in a Democratic primary, except to boost the Black share of the vote with University Park, Pembrooke, and Kankakee.

  12. Even one on one against a credible black opponent JJJ would be in trouble.

    If I were to create a IrishPiratestein’s monster to defeat JJJ I would find a good government type black female pol to run and take him on.

    Anyone know any younger versions of Toni Preckwinkle?

    Such a pol could probably count on a large majority of the white vote and a good hunk of the black vote. Particularly among black females who are a bit less enamored of the diminutive wonder than they used to be.

    The question we all need to ask though is does anyone truly want JJJ out of office? Do you really want to be subjected to the endless press conferences and speculation as to his “comeback”?

    Let’s all get into the wayback machine and recall the weeks before Blago was arrested. Remember how annoying JJJ was as he tried to get the Senate appointment. I think his wife referred to him as a “beast” at the time. “Beast” having a complementary meaning in her view. Sorta like old White Stockings fans might remember Greg Luzinski.

    Comment by Irishpirate Tuesday, Sep 27, 11 @ 12:36 pm

  13. Wasn’t Greg Luzinski “The Bull”?

    Comment by The Captain Tuesday, Sep 27, 11 @ 1:00 pm

  14. Luzinski may have been “the bull”. I meant the comparison more to point out how Mrs JJJ viewed the term “beast”.

    I actually viewed the word “beast” negatively, until someone more attuned to the black community told me the word had a positive meaning in the sense it was used.

    Comment by Irishpirate Tuesday, Sep 27, 11 @ 1:03 pm

  15. No positive can be attached to Luzinski’s performance against the Orioles in the 83 playoffs.

    Comment by wordslinger Tuesday, Sep 27, 11 @ 1:06 pm

  16. The premise of JJJ out of DC would be far more appealing if it didn’t mean he may spend more time in Chicago.

    Comment by anon Tuesday, Sep 27, 11 @ 1:18 pm

  17. Worslinger…did you have to bring up the ‘83 Sox reference today of all days?

    Comment by Stones Tuesday, Sep 27, 11 @ 1:32 pm

  18. Stones,

    Dybzinski.

    See? There have been worse days than today for Sox fans.

    Comment by wordslinger Tuesday, Sep 27, 11 @ 1:37 pm

  19. I think Beale would be a factor if he gets in but if someone like Toi Hutchison got in JJJ is finished!
