* I was talking to one of US Sen. Mark Kirk’s top staffers yesterday and he had this to say about his boss…
“He’s like all these guys, man. He’s addicted to that blog.”
Heh.
* Mark Kirk is a sport. I guess that’s the best way I can describe him. I’ve whacked him hard over the years, but he’s always taken it like a man and he’s never acted petty about it later. I’ve always admired that about him and I’m sorry that it took his stroke for me to say it.
This post will be printed and delivered to Sen. Kirk in his hospital room. So, let’s do our best to brighten his spirits and wish him a speedy recovery. Say something nice.
*** UPDATE - 12:04 pm *** Sen. Kirk’s physician is speaking live to the media. Click here to watch the live video stream. So far, there is no major news yet. It’s just an update on the Senator’s condition. He asked for his Blackberry this morning, he has slight paralysis on the left side of his face, he’ll be in ICU for 5-7 days, his speech is “slightly slurred.”

Senator it warms me on this cold today to know that over the last few years you’ve been reading my proudly pro-MSK comments on this blog. I hope you get better quickly and know that while the media says you won’t be back in action for a few months, in MSK fashion you are probably already back at work.

Worked on some Waukegan Harbor area projects with the Sen. Kirk was in the US House and while don’t frequently like Rs he was very solid.

I have always been a fan of Senator Kirk as he represents what attracted me to the GOP. He is willing to talk and compromise. I had the opportunity to hear you speak last week at State Farm, and was quite impressed. While I certainly don’t agree with you on a number of issues, I found that I agreed on more than I expected, and I respected your views on the ones I didn’t. When I heard the news, I felt for your family and then I also thought “God, why him? Sen. Kirk uses that brain - he really seems to think through issues rather than seeing which way the wind is blowing or sticking to a rigid ideology.”

Though we disagree on a lot, Senator, and we do agree on some foreign policy issues, you were kind when you spoke at my synagogue a few months ago, even when I stated that I was a member of the opposing party. Mark Kirk is what every conservative — every politician — ought to be: thoughtful without being wishy-washy, principled without being rigid, genuinely willing to reach across the aisle and not just pay lip service to the concept. I didn’t vote for him last time, but I am proud to call him my senator. I have no doubt he will continue to set a standard for others to follow as he embarks on his path to full recovery.

I am a Democratic opposition researcher and have had the challenge of examining your record twice. In both cases I found no major objections, and I cannot say you at any less fitting for Illinois than your senior colleague. You are one of perhaps half a dozen elected officials in either party in the entire country whom I view as suitable for the job.
Also, if you don’t get better and we are thrown once again on the mercy of the appointment of another halfwit governor I am going to lose my mind. Recover, and enjoy a long career.

Mark, you’ve always given me straight answers to issues over the years when I met you privately and in public. It wasn’t easy being one of a handful of Greek-Americans to support you for election so I expect that Kirk fighting spirit to kick into overdrive. I want to wish Senator Kirk a full and speedy recovery. No one has been a more vocal critic of Sen Kirk, I campaigned against him during the the republican primary, and vote for Alexi. Despite all of that, I respect his service to the country and think that in his time in the senate he has far exceeded my expectation of him. Focus on your health and only your health. I couldn’t use my whole left side after my strokes but rehab brought me a long way towards recovery, as did my life partner. I’ll take you for a cruise in my Cadillac in the summertime!

While I didn’t agree with him 100% ideologically, I voted for him in the primary and in the general, and I’m glad I did. Since his election, he has conducted himself with the class and honor befitting a United States Senator, an accomplishment that seems less and less common these days at every level of government. I wish him the best in the difficult days ahead, and I look forward to watching him overcome his challenges to take the floor of the U.S. Senate again as soon as possible.

Worked for local government in the 10th for a long time and you were a constant presence. Kids rlaley don’t have any idea how vulnerable they are! Almost all of them think their parents are being overprotective. It’s scary!
