US Supremes reject remap appeal

The Supreme Court will not hear a challenge to redistricting in Illinois despite complaints from the League of Women Voters of Illinois that the new congressional and legislative lines are unconstitutional.

The high court on Monday turned away the lawsuit that complained the new congressional and legislative maps are unconstitutional because they assign voters to districts based on their political views and voting histories. A federal court threw out the group’s lawsuit last year.

They have to do it even if their chances are slim. The Democrats did it in 1991 when they lost the map, and yes, they went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court challenging the map. Remeber the parties have their constituencies and their internal factions. Party leaders can’t afford to give up no matter what the odds are.

The next couple of years is the time to seriously address the remap processes. If we wait until the next remap is imminent, any reforms will automatically be mired in political fear.

Remap reformers: if you’re serious, the time is now, not five or six years from now.

Mark is right about working now to reform the process for 2021. I just don’t know if there’s sufficient concern to do so. The League’s petition drive in 2010 failed miserably.

Now that the last appeal is dead, Republicans have to face a potential debacle in November and another decade in the wilderness under the Madigan map.

Robo, I think you are mistaken, the 1991 redistricting challenge by the Democrats never went beyond the Illinois Supreme Court.

The first time before the Democratic majority Illinois Supreme Court, the court sent the map to the Republican majority redistricting commission for changes. Some changes were made, the map still favored Republicans. The Illinois Supreme Court accepted that map, when one Democrat switched.
