Quinn tries to retaliate against Schock

Posted in:

* We talked the other day about the very testy joint appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” program by Congressman Aaron Schock and Gov. Pat Quinn.

The two then appeared separately on the Don & Roma Show and went after each other hard. “I’ve never heard so much gibberish and nonsense,” Schock said. Listen to Schock go off on the governor

Schock, by the way, also said he was telling the truth on “Morning Joe” when he said that the House had passed a five-year highway bill. Not true.

* And then the governor retaliated

Schock was supposed to appear with Quinn in Springfield at an Executive Mansion kickoff luncheon for Illinois’ Special Olympics. The Quinn administration contacted event sponsors and tried to get Schock removed from the program or to shift things so the two wouldn’t appear together, said event officials who asked not to be identified because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the matter.

When the program went on as scheduled, organizers were told Quinn was running late and that Schock should appear on his own.

Brooke Anderson, a Quinn spokeswoman, said the governor’s late arrival was due to travel, not Schock. She also acknowledged the spat.

“Considering the congressman’s comments (two) days before in which he stated blatant falsehoods about the federal transportation bill … we did have concerns about the congressman politicizing the event,” Anderson said.

The second incident involved a central Illinois planning agency that had secured Schock’s attendance for a fall transportation conference in Peoria. Last Monday the organization was told by state transportation officials to disinvite Schock.

In an email to Schock, Mike Phelan, chairman of the Tri-County Regional Planning Commission, said the agency got a phone call from IDOT official Tom Kelso “specifically telling us to uninvite you apparently due to (His words) your appearance on a Morning Joe show last week with Gov. Quinn.”

  1. Quinn’s really got it wrong here. His pettiness builds up Schock.

Instead, he should engage Schock as much as possible and make him defend the know-nothing, do-nothing, don’t-care House GOP caucus. That crew has no game.

Comment by wordslinger Friday, Jun 29, 12 @ 10:23 am

  2. Quinn is just highlighting his petty vindictiveness here. Weak.

Comment by Anonymous Friday, Jun 29, 12 @ 10:26 am

  3. Wow, Pat Quinn is even worse at politics than I thought he was.

He tries to play hardball, fails, and then decides he’s going to take his ball and go home.

The sad thing is, it’s not like Aaron Schock is a heavy-hitter. You’d think a sitting Democratic Governor in a very blue state would be able to find a way to retaliate at a junior Republican Congressman without humiliating himself.

  4. Great way to make yourself look small, Gov.

  6. Wow soy boy is going to threaten to take his ball and go home soon. Speaking of blatant falsehoods Gov Quinn I remember someone saying they would veto any income tax increase above 4%. I also remember someone stating they support the death penalty.

Comment by Fed up Friday, Jun 29, 12 @ 10:37 am

  7. Very bad move to mess with a Special Olympics event.

Bad move to try to get him disinvited from the conference. Better to just let everyone know Schock has been publicly lying about transportation issues, and they should be aware before he speaks at a transportation conference.

Comment by mark walker Friday, Jun 29, 12 @ 10:37 am

  8. No matter the merits, this was a mistake by Quinn. Schock is basically in the trial-balloon phase of floating his name out there for the governorship. It isn’t getting much loft, but Quinn doing this gives Schock more credibility now.

He should just focus on governing and let the wanna-bes duke it out. Quinn will have enough to worry about in his own primary.

Comment by John Galt Friday, Jun 29, 12 @ 10:43 am

  9. Quinn looks petty and vindictive. It shows a true lack of any sort of leadership ability and statesmanship.

Comment by Todd Friday, Jun 29, 12 @ 10:51 am

  10. Schock is a gift to Quinn. Make him talk as much as possible and expose the vapidness of the House GOP.

Quinn should welcome any and all engagements and comparisons with Schock.

He might want to skip that Men’s Health cover shot, though.

Did Ev Dirksen do a Men’s Health cover shot? Is that a Peoria thing?

Comment by wordslinger Friday, Jun 29, 12 @ 10:52 am

  11. Schock for governor - I have to think about that. As much as I really loathe the guy, it would end one party rule in Illinois. And it would get him out of Congress. But he would probably want to run for President as soon as he got elected. What a jerk, but he might be an improvement. Hmmm.

Comment by Excessively Rabid Friday, Jun 29, 12 @ 10:53 am

  12. Quinn rightly fears Schock as an opponent. Rutherford and Dillard have lost races and can’t raise money. Quinn could only be so lucky to have Bill Brady as his opponent again. Quinn also doesn’t fear self funders who can’t get it in their heads that a candidate can’t buy a base. Think…Blair Hull and Ron Gidwitz among others. Schock has never lost and won several races against long odds. Still, Quinn is being stupid, this just builds Schock up.

Comment by RoxyM Friday, Jun 29, 12 @ 10:53 am

  13. To use a lousy sports analogy: Come prepared, well practiced, bring your game, and take on all comers. The Gov is the big dog, in the big league job. He should be unconcerned if he is confident in his own position and capabilities. Disinviting just gives the other person bonus face points that do not need to be given away.

Comment by zatoichi Friday, Jun 29, 12 @ 10:56 am

  14. Really the Special Olympics? Stay classy Pat…

Also nice spin RoxyM I suspect most folks consider losing to Pat Quinn in a general a little different than Ruthford running against Jessie White. But you stick with that theme…

Comment by OneMan Friday, Jun 29, 12 @ 11:00 am

  15. I was at the Special Olympics luncheon. I remember thinking it seemed strange they made Schock speak by himself and then have all other speakers go together 20 minutes later when Quinn showed up.

Comment by Ronald RayGun Friday, Jun 29, 12 @ 11:03 am

  16. So the Governor is dodging a Congressman?

Is it just me or does this come across as a bit sad?

I agree that Schock made a gaffe on Morning Joe, but this makes appear that the Governor is intimidated by one of the youngest members of congress!

Someone needs to talk to the Governor and his staff about what image they want to portray for the state of Illinois. If he can’t handle a 20 something year old member of congress, then many people may lose a lot of faith.

    Comment by A.B. Friday, Jun 29, 12 @ 11:09 am

  17. Schock encapsulates all that is wrong in Washington. He repeats the talking points well, blames the opposition for all that’s wrong with the world, but in the end he does nothing to move the country forward. Schock is the new antonym of Statesman.

Quinn is right to go after him. It may be inartful, but it’s the right thing to do.

Comment by Calhoun Native Friday, Jun 29, 12 @ 11:11 am

  18. One Man: Rutherford only got 30 some percent in that race. How bright was it to run against Jesse White? He got into a race and lost. More importantly, how much has Rutherford raised in statewide races and how much does he have in the bank now? The point is while Quinn can’t stand Rutherford, what has he done against him?

Comment by RoxyM Friday, Jun 29, 12 @ 11:12 am

  19. The question is why is Quinn sparing with Schock more than 2 years out from their potential match up?

    He’s scared.

Schock has already proven himself to be one of the most effective legislators and politicians in American history.

Not only that, but he will raise more than enough money to trounce Quinn.

Rutherford couldn’t raise a dollar to save his life.

    Schock for the Win.

  24. “Schock blames all that’s wrong in the world on the opposition.” Well as far as it goes in Illinois, dems have had all power for a decade, so is to blame? Madigan has presided over epic decline in IL for 28 of the past 30 years. In Schock’s 3 years in Congress, his first two years had Obama, Pelosi and Reid in power. So yes, if you have all the power, you are accountable. It was Quinn who said on Don Wade & Roma that Ford benefited from the auto bailout. WRONG. Ford didn’t get a dime. All these snide attacks on Schock prove he is the one dems & Quinn fear most.

=I was in the beauty salon this week and some of the ladies were talking about shock running for governor.=

And THAT’s really reassuring. I’ll bet that for every one vote coming out of the “beauty salon,” there’ll be two cast (probably former supporters) to remind people of substance over “beauty”–just to keep things balanced.

  31. How long did it take IL deems to do a capital bill? 8 years so give me a break.
Schock and the House GOP proposed a 5 year fed highway bill. Was due in 2009. But Obama made the Pelosi controlled House postpone it.
Who has said something incorrect? Obama? How is the fact that he visited 57 states? Quinn? Ford got a bailout, ha! How about a promise from Quinn, do his promises expire in 24 hours? What about Biden? Where do i start. So get off it, you all vote for people who have said something wrong at one time or another. Keep railing on Schock, you make it evident with every post who is the strongest Rerpublican.

  34. Annonymous: if Quinn is not scared of a challenge from Schock, then you give the explanation for Quinn being petty by disinviting Schock to a Special Olympics and transportation event in the week after they appeared on Morning Joe? I mean with the mess Quinn should be focusing on, why would he take time to penalize Schock if Schock was so insignificant?

Obama has now admitted it is a tax increase. OK, you’re consistent. Schock never doubled down, he immediately said he misspoke and that the House GOP’s plan was a 5 year highway bill, not that it was passed.

  45. To the question of Quinn v Schock. How ham-handed can the Gov. and his people get. They should be looking for more chances to get Schock on the stage and catch him telling tales. Let Schock sit and smile while the Gov trots out the facts. The more often they can get Schock on tape disregarding the truth they better off they will be if he chooses to run for Gov. The ads write themselves. Instead the Gov looks petty and makes it look like Schock might be telling the truth.

  46. Quinn has always been ruthless when it comes to his “earned” media, so this is simply the way he’s always been, uninviting individuals is no surprise. 49. Pot: It was an objective statement when I said Rutherford and Dillard can’t rasie money. For the statewide races they ran, they only raised just over or under $1 million. Schock raised over a million for re-election as state rep in 2006. Here are two additional facts to back up my statement.
    1. STATEWIDE constitutional officer Rutherford: $440 cash on hand.
    2. Three year Congressman Schock $2.6 million cash on hand.

Comment by RoxyM Friday, Jun 29, 12 @ 12:33 pm

  50. Roxy -

I fail to see the inherent connection between being able to raise money and win elections and making good things happen. I’ve seen lots of the first two from Schock, I have yet to see anything of the last from him.

Unless we all demand our elected officials have real ideas and a real passion to help everyone they represent, we will continue to have wunderkinds in the Schock mode. And Schock needs to learn that whiz man will never fit him like the whiz kid did and find himself a different schtick.

  52. Colossus, tell me the good things Quinn, Madigan, Cullerton, Rutherford et al have made? Illinois is broke, $8 billion behind in paying bills, with the highest unfunded pension liability in the nation, even after a 67% tax hike. Who do you support who has excelled in “making good things happen.” I’d like to know.

Comment by RoxyM Friday, Jun 29, 12 @ 12:46 pm

  53. RoxyM fine you are right Schock is a great god and everyone else in the Republican party is chopped liver. Winning statewide is nothing compared to getting elected as a congressman in central Illinois.

How slow we were to ever even think to question your very thoughts and ideas…

But while your guy is raising all that money (federal btw so it can’t help you running statewide) Dan has been speaking in front of virtually every group that will have him across the state.

But wait that’s right, the cover of Men’s Health is exactly the same thing. Also voters in general have all those warm feelings about congress and hell the last congressman we elected governor worked out great!

Also by the way it was $440,000 in cash on hand at the end of March, not $440 but then again those zeros at the end get in the way of your argument.

Also a guy half way into a 4 year term is exactly the same as a guy facing an election in two year term with redistricting. Those are not apples and oranges at all…

Opps, sorry, that’s right Schock is awesome and everyone else isn’t. Sorry I forgot the narrative again…

Comment by OneMan Friday, Jun 29, 12 @ 1:25 pm

  54. ===federal btw so it can’t help you running statewide===

That never used to be the case. With the new state caps, though, I’d have to check that more closely now.

Comment by Rich Miller Friday, Jun 29, 12 @ 1:30 pm

  55. Roxy -
You’re making highly negative claims about the abilities of other Republicans compared to Schock and in response to a request for a positive affirmation of Schock’s abilities, you attempt to spin the conversation away from Schock and to the (admittedly difficult to defend) record of Democrats.

Trolling 101: My guy is awesome, your guy sucks, and nothing will ever make me answer a real question, I will continue to throw out anything and everything that is unrelated to avoid having to defend the indefensible.

Please note, nothing here is intended or, I believe, even able to be construed as a personal attack or dismissal of your position. I’m pointing out that your argument is faulty and that you have failed to answer a perfectly legitimate question.

I come here expecting conversations to rise above “I know you are but what am I”. If I wanted this, I’d go play in the HuffPo or WND comments sections.

Comment by Colossus Friday, Jun 29, 12 @ 1:31 pm

  56. Dan, never said Schock is a “god.” Never said everyone else is “chopped liver.” My apologies, I meant to put a K next to the $440. So let me correct this:
    1. Statewide constitutional officer (been in government for 20 years and has been all over the state) Dan Rutherford $440,000.
    2. State Senator Kirk Dillard, former Edgar chief of staff, been in government 25 years, from DuPage County, $84,000.
    3. Three year Congressman Aaron Schock, $2,600,000.
The point of the only comment I intended to make was that Quinn fears Schock and not Rutherford or Dillard or a self funder without a base. All the follow up comments have simply been defending the original point against criticisms that I feel don’t hold water.

Comment by RoxyM Friday, Jun 29, 12 @ 1:36 pm

  57. Very un-statesman-like for Quinn. Would love to know if that was Quinn’s idea, or if it came from the leftover Blago people in his staff? Because that reads like a classic Blago move.

When a guy disses you on your turf, you don’t dare hide; you confront. You show up and show you can take a punch, then you show you can dish it out as well, or you can show that you choose to play at a higher level. That’s Chicago 101.

Comment by Newsclown Friday, Jun 29, 12 @ 1:51 pm

  58. Colossus, a point most Republicans who vote in primaries want to know is can the candidate win? We lost 3 elections in a row for Governor, so that kind of matters. A great candidate who cannot win isn’t able to “make great things happen.”
Schock has done plenty which is why he has strong support. A campaign will detail those accomplishments. But if you think making the points that he has won tough elections and never lost, and can raise more money than others competing for the nomination is not relevant, then you need to correct all political pundits when they evaluate candidates for high office because those two points always come up. By setting up a straw man standard as you did, I’d like you to tell me the name of an Illinois politician who lives up to that standard of “making great things happen” in your book. Did Obama have anything to say he had a record of “making great things happen” in the Illinois Senate or the U.S. Senate before he was elected President? You want Schock to answer to a standard to which you won’t name someone else who has done so.

  59. –..a point most Republicans who vote in primaries want to know is can the candidate win? We lost 3 elections in a row for Governor, so that kind of matters…–

I was specifically looking for the one with the photo of the downstate Adonis congressman on it. Then I remembered that I don’t have any Men’s Health magazines.

Schock should probably try to avoid any high profile races. You know a race where he might face some strong scrutiny from major media and online trolls.

The damage that could be done to him given his obsession with being the prettiest congressman wouldn’t be……well pretty. “Mirror, mirror, on the wall who’s the prettiest Congressman of all.”

Schock V Quinn would be two unelectable candidates facing one another. Quinn prevailed in the last such race.

I’m all for bipartisan diplomacy, but Schock is neither bipartisan nor diplomatic.

Rather try to kick Schock out of the Special Olympics event, I would have snarked about him donating his workout tapes to the cause.

Rather than diss him out of the transportation event, I would note how many times Schock has been at odds with Secy of Transportation Ray LaHood.

Pretty soon, Schock will stop accepting invitations at events where the Governor is appearing.

  65. Schock is a serious threat as a statewide candidate and the Dems know it. I think he has a good chance to become either our next Governor or one of our two U.S. Senators. He is a prolific fundraiser and very good on the stump. He is personable. He may not be the smartest or most effective legislator, but he is very knowledgeable and can speak well on many issues (and not just matters in front of his committee).
