Poll has Duckworth leading Walsh by 9 points

Posted in:

* The CREDO SuperPAC has a new survey of the 8th Congressional District race conducted by Public Policy Polling

* Of the questions asking whether stuff that Joe Walsh said would make them more or less likely to vote for him, here’s what appears to be the strongest response

* Another, perhaps more interesting result

Crosstabs are here. 500 voters were polled August 13-14. The margin of error is +/- 4.38 percent.

* Meanwhile, Gov. Pat Quinn called Walsh the nation’s worst congressman yesterday

Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn calls outspoken Rep. Joe Walsh “the worst congressman in America.”

The Democratic governor didn’t mention Walsh by name Wednesday, but he was talking about congressional candidate Tammy Duckworth’s opponent. She’s running against Walsh, a Republican from McHenry.

Walsh, in reply, said Quinn was the nation’s worst governor

The Walsh campaign quickly hit back, calling Quinn “the worst governor in the country presiding over a state with 8.6 percent unemployment and a massive unfunded pension liability.”

Quinn, spokeswoman Erin Rapp said, “should spend more time focusing on how to solve Illinois’ fiscal crisis and get Illinoisans back to work rather than share his unwarranted opinions on the congressman.'’

  1. So the next time someone shoots up a mosque (or any non-Christian place of worship) is Walsh going to admit he’s part of the reason these things happen?

I don’t think Quinn should have said what he said. I don’t disagree with him, I just think public figures should be more discreet.

  2. I don’t know if Walsh is the worst congressman in America. Allen West of Florida may have that honor. But Walsh has to be a close second.

  4. Auto poll of only 500 voters - not even Likely voters. Worthless.

  5. Did Walsh pay Gov. Quinn to get involved? It is the best thing possible for Walsh.

  7. Quinn calls Walsh the worst congressman in the nation, and Walsh calls Quin the worst governor in the nation?

…. sad to say, but they both might actually be right….

  8. Wonder if the RCCC will cut Walsh off.

  9. Cheryl may be the worst commenter in the nation! (lol)Don’t blame Walsh for a mosque shooting that has not occurred unless he pulls the trigger.

Wow, Finger in the Wind Quinn is more critical of Walsh than he was of Blago.

Comment by Wumpus Thursday, Aug 16, 12 @ 10:57 am

  10. Wumpus, that’s an understatement. “He always does the right thing” vs. “the worst Congressman”.

  11. Wordslinger it’s NRCC, as for walsh that’s not a bad poll for him considering how much heat he’s taken over the last 2 years (much of it self inflicted). 39-44 favorability in a district designed to cashier him + his problems is not horrible. Duckworth was awful in their debate performance -almost plummer-esque and if he can behave (unlikely) I think his energy is a real problem for her, as it was for bean, as is the potential for outside superpac help which should be forthcoming given how he’s been there for the Koch wing of the party.

  12. Shore, thanks for the correction. Don’t know where that came from.

Koch Wing of the party? Yikes. Might not want to advertise that too much.

  13. As a pollster, one cannot honestly publish an up or down number such as this based on a poll which begins with slanted questions, a small sample, non-representative voter modeling, and makes assumptions with the data.

I’d like to see some real polling here.. This was clearly a push poll and a political tactic, not a legitimate scientific poll.

  14. http://act.credoaction.com/take_down/about.html

credo-pac is a new sketchy (not because we disagree politically but because of their background) leftwing organization, I still think given all his self inflicted wounds and the way that district was gerrymandered the 39-44 unfavorable is pretty good for walsh.

Comment by Shore Thursday, Aug 16, 12 @ 1:32 pm

  15. === for walsh that’s not a bad poll for him ===

    Shore, that’s not saying much.

His favorables are upside down. His re-elect is upside down. And his efforts to bring Duckworth down to his level backfire.

Pundits from Charlie Cook to Contressional Quarterly have been predicting Duckworth wins by 8. It could be even more.

Comment by Yellow Dog Democrat Thursday, Aug 16, 12 @ 2:55 pm

  16. the thirsty in a desert haven’t had a drink of water in months ILGOP didn’t even think walsh wouldn’t compete last time and he won. if you read their website credo-pac isn’t pro duckworth, they’re militantly anti-walsh and yet in a district again, designed to end his career, the best they can find in a poll is his favorability down 5 points after 2 years of HORRIBLE press for him. You could say duckworth hasn’t begun to unload on him, but the media value of the all the stories about his child support issues alone is probably more millions more than duckworth has to spend. What’s more, walsh has a lot of energy which is in part how he beat bean and I think with the superpac support he has earned and should get, he could make it a lot closer.

BTW, you could run a generic, clean, dave mcsweeney/steve greenburg type republican in that district and probably get those numbers. They should be a lot worse than they are.

  17. Cheryl

Do you blame goofy Joe Biden they will put y’all back in chains for a liberal shooting up a conservative think tank?

Comment by Fed up Thursday, Aug 16, 12 @ 4:27 pm

  18. Fed Up -

With the disclaimer that Walsh should not be blamed, I think it’s quite a stretch to connect Biden’s comments a shooting at FRC.

At least in Walsh’s case, the issues are connected.

Comment by late to the party Thursday, Aug 16, 12 @ 4:59 pm

  19. Shore, Mahoney
Bean lost due to a Green Party spoiler who siphoned away 6,500 votes in a race Bean lost by 291. There is no third party on the ballot this time.
