* Republican congressional candidate Rodney Davis has a new TV ad. From a press release…
The new ad, titled “For Them,” features Rodney Davis and players from a Junior Football League team in Taylorville that Davis coaches. In the ad, Davis emphasizes the importance of cutting wasteful Washington spending to reduce the $16 trillion national debt that is crushing the national economy. Davis emphasizes the need to get the debt crisis under control for the future generation that he coaches in football. The ad can be viewed here.
The ad begins Thursday.
Here is the full script of the ad:
Davis: “I’ve been coaching these kids since they were five.
At first, it was about spending more time with my twin boys.
Now, it’s about helping all these boys become great men.
I worry about the America we are going to leave them.
Our sixteen trillion dollar debt leaves each of them on the hook for fifty grand.
…and it’s killing our economy.
I’m Rodney Davis and I approved this message because in Congress, I’ll fight the wasteful spending – for you, and for them.”

At the beginning of this video, from the State Fair, Davis is seen ignoring a woman who has a question about Medicare. It’s not good TV for Davis, but later the woman begins haranguing the candidate, so she may have been a plant. Watch…

Good ad. Davis should do well in the district,which he knows well and people know and like him. His opponent is far to the left on key issue, which will hurt him.

I’m thinking that folks don’t get that haranguing Davis on Medicare or most other issues isn’t going to phase him. His issue is a flag burning amendment! He’ll speak out on an issue like that!

C’mon Rich. Why combine the “trackers” video with the guy’s new ad? If this woman wasn’t a plant, she was at least there to harass Republicans, and notice the we only see the shortest glimpse of her during the video. Then we hear the tracker asking why Davis isn’t answering the woman. Gotcha politics at its best. I think Davis did exactly the right thing. He is there to meet and excite Republicans, it is Republican Day after all. He did right to ignore the harasser and the tracker both.

It’s not good TV for the pathetic Democrats who send this “tracker” everywhere Davis goes. Davis is presented with a Hobson’s Choice on what he does with these people.

Cinci, you have a point. I personally believe that candidates ought to track their opponents’ trackers. Turn the tables and show what they’re really doing. But without that competing video, the DCCC’s tracker is all we got in this case.

I think your skin may be a little thin for politics, Cinci. Both sides use trackers. Not saying I love the practice, but at least I can admit that my side is just as guilty as the other.

the friday night lights imagery is a plus, but I think americans care more about jobs right now than debt. the debt issue is great for gop primaries. for general election, I think it smacks of too much time reading heritage foundation talking points instead of district voters.

I think trackers recording what candidates say is fine. I’d like candidates to be able to have more private times with voters. Maybe those days are gone.
I think trackers engaging the candidates, like this one, are probably subject to backlash. But who knows.
Davis ad is fine. Nothing special, but solid.
And Rich doesn’t have to apologize for the single post.

LOL. Leroy, you almost had me up to that point. Davis has never held elected office before. If you’ve got polling you’d like to share, great. Otherwise, I seriously doubt the voters of the district either know him or like him.
Which is why he’s running an intro ad.

Very solid ad. I saw him speak and he was talking about coaching his kids’ football team. It was a nice theme to tie into the speech, and everyone seemed to like it. It wasn’t the typical lame political speech that we’ve all become accustomed to.
As for the tracker: yawn. This is the reason many people get so frustrated with the political process. He was right to ignore her. If he’d tried to answer her, she would’ve predictably tried to talk over him and interrupt, so why bother?

YDD, you are correct, Davis has never held elected office before. Voters already turned him out for State Rep and Mayor of his hometown. Not too impressive.
The DCCC started an anti-Davis ad today– http://atr.rollcall.com/dccc-starts-ads-in-illinois-13th-district/ A quarter of a million dollar investment is a big number in this district. It seems to show national confidence in Gill’s candidacy.

I enjoyed seeing Rodney’s tracker twice last week in Champaign. She tried to get in to two private events I attended and was turned away. I’m glad to see she was covering important stuff like Rodney’s appearance at the Wayne Rosenthal Mostechelli Dinner.
Isn’t Illinois a 2 party consent state?

I think Gill’s got a great shot at winning, but let’s not get too excited about the DCCC’s ad buy.
They’ve got polling which indicates this message will move numbers. If, in fact, the numbers do move (Davis’ negatives, if not the horserace question), they are all in.
I’m guessing they probably figure that they can run a 1/3 positive v. 2/3 negative ad rotation after labor day.
They’ll soften Davis up on ethics and define him as a party insider, then go after him on stuff like Medicare.
Meanwhile, just keep reminding folks that Gill is a doctor.
