Howlett Building update 2

Posted in:

Gas leak was apparently not the cause, but a result of the collapse.

Anti-bird netting was over an open area in the center of the building. Heavy snow buildup on the netting may have caused the collapse of the roof below. The Howlett is a square building that’s empty in the middle. The roof which collapsed is just above ground level.

Entire Capitol Complex evacuated because of the gas leak.

SPRINGFIELD — Authorities evacuated the state Capitol and surrounding government buildings Wednesday after reports of a structural problem at one of the administration buildings and a strong odor there and in the Capitol.

Secretary of State spokesman Randy Nehrt said there was a structural collapse at the Michael J. Howlett office building near the Capitol but had no further information.

WTAX Radio in Springfield reported part of the roof collapsed, puncturing the floor about 2 p.m., and that employees smelled gas.

Fire officials did not immediately have any reports of any injuries.
