Daley says he won’t be swayed by Madigan bid

Posted in:

* Our quote of the day

The son of one of Illinois’ most powerful political families said the plans of a daughter of another political dynasty won’t affect his bid for governor.

Bill Daley told the Daily Herald Monday that “what the attorney general does or what she doesn’t do, that’s not going to affect my decision.” However, he acknowledged, “I know people don’t believe that.” [Emphasis added.]

We’ll see.

* Was there a meeting between Daley and Speaker Madigan to discuss the race? Brown’s not saying

Steve Brown, Michael Madigan’s spokesman, would not say whether he and Bill Daley have met to discuss who would be on the Democratic primary ballot. Madigan “makes a practice of not commenting on private meetings,” Brown said.

Daley told the Daily Herald that he’d make a decision by April.

* By the way, check out Lisa Madigan’s campaign Twitter page. Her posting frequency has increased a lot in the past few weeks. Not saying this is a sign of anything. Just saying.

  1. There is ZERO hunger for a Daley candidacy by anyone other than Daley cronies yearning to get back into the money. The fact that recent polls show Daley losing to Madigan IN CHICAGO should tell everyone all they need to know about this race. I bet money that if Lisa runs, Daley bows out no matter what he says.

  3. Actually the real “yearners” are GOP big wigs — JRT types — who look over the landscape see their misfits as sure losers and think a Daley is better than PQ

  5. Dear Mr. Daley:

There is a line that, when crossed, endless, actionless, chatter about one’s personal ambition becomes embarrassing, naval-gaving narcissism.

If you would like to know where that line is, look behind you.

  6. You know what voters in Illinois are not saying, “We need more of that Daley leadership!” Elections are always forward looking events. Say what you want about Lisa/MJM 40+ years of leadership, but she can project a forward looking image and message. A Daley candidacy seems so 1995 to me; IMHO.

  7. RT What Chicago Cynic and Wordslinger both said.

Does he have a clue yet that the underwhelming groundswell of support maybe suggesting that nobody cares what his Magic 8 Ball is telling him at home.

I am hoping that if both Bill and Lisa get in, then Toi Huthchinson will jump in also, so we can see if the Democratic Illinois Senate endorsers will divide their support by the other three candidates.

Maybe she might begin to get the message too that perhaps a little introspection is in order.

  8. Where is Bill Daley in all this?

“Secretary Daley, welcome, have a seat. Speaker Madigan will be with you shortly. Coffee?”

THAT is where Bill Daley is…in the lobby, waiting.

  9. If Bill Daley announces a run, I bet a lot of folks will faint right along with him.

  10. Reasons to vote for Bill Daley:
    1. He is a Sox fan.
    2. (Can’t think of any others.)

  11. == what Lisa does won’t affect my decision ==
The last person who said those famous last words was Joe Birkett when he announced another run for AG. Once Lisa announced she was running for re-election, instead of for governor, Joe promptly folded his AG run.

  12. How do the numbers split. I think Lisa will win downstate due to her multiple runs statewide, but Daley could fare better in Chicago. Daley has to think he can play in Chicago better with the name.

I also would not discount him challenging her, but trying to keep the race corgil so he can drop to the Lt. Spot or wait for a Senate seat. Lets face it, run against Lisa Madigan and win, you are unbeatable. Run against her and lose, you lost to a candidate who has won multiple state wide elections and the daughter of the most powerful man in the state.

Birkett had to win or his statewide career is over before it started. Daley can lose and be ready for the future.

  13. Bill Daley = Bill Clinton.
Bill Clinton = 22 million jobs, balanced budget, best economy in a generation.

  14. ===Daley has to think he can play in Chicago better with the name.===

Let’s not kid ourselves, this is Old 13th Ward, versus Old 11th Ward, plain and simple. Bodies on the streets, best Election Day aparatus. If those tow go at it in the city, it’s a Precinct by Precinct battle.

===he can drop to the Lt. Spot or wait for a Senate seat.===

Gov and LG now run as a team, so a “drop to LG” is not possible.

Further, if it isn’t cordial, no way Governor Madigan, will appoint Daley easily or quickly. Both the Daleys and the Madigans don’t work that way.

===Daley can lose and be ready for the future.===

Daleys (Richard J., Richard M., John, Bill), they HATE to lose, hate it more than liking to win. To convince Bill Daley its ok to lose for the future is something any Daley would have a difficult time understanding.

“You mean, lose?” “Losing is ok in the long run?”

MJM, “It’s ok, Bill. You’ll be fine”

    Yikes!

    What future?
Bill is not a young man. He wouldn’t be running for the future.

Seems like there will have to be a lot of lg candidates committing early.

  17. I believe Bill Daley when he says what the attorney general does or what she does not do will affect his decision. That’s because I believe that Daley was never actually going to run for office.

  19. Patriot, I’m guessing you’re not from Chicago. Daley is running worse in the polls in Chicago now and that’s not surprising. NOBODY up here is yearning for Daley. The parking meter deal, among others, has left a very bad taste in everyone’s mouth. No More Daleys!

    OW,

The 11th Ward Organization is a shell of its former self. The Speaker’s guys would eat them alive. As far as best election day apparatus goes, there’s no contest.

  22. - Fred’s Mustache -,

    Concur.

While the outcome may not be in question, the idea of the Old 11th Ward versus the Old 13th Ward still rings VERY true. I was not handicapping the “crews” just pointing them out.

That street campaign would still be so fascinating to watch in the precincts. That I think would still…be true as well.

  23. Daley has been a DISASTER everywhere he’s been. A perfect fit for ILLinois.
