Sneed has learned that Gov. Pat Quinn plans to propose an increase in the state minimum wage in Wednesday’s State of the State address, which would raise it to at least $10 an hour over the next four years.

Gov. Pat Quinn will announce today in his State of the State speech that the Urbana-Champaign-based school, in partnership with its National Center for Supercomputing Applications and private companies, will be forming an Illinois Manufacturing Lab likely to be located in the central area of Chicago.
The facility will be a somewhat smaller, more applications-based version of the UI Labs tech-research center that was announced in January by U of I President Robert Easter and others. The prime goal will be to make the state’s manufacturers more competitive, something that has become increasingly challenging as overseas firms take control of many of the world’s factories.
Military veterans who have special skills could get a leg up when it comes to landing a job under an initiative expected to be formally unveiled by Gov. Pat Quinn Wednesday.
The Lee Enterprises Springfield Bureau has learned the governor will issue an executive order requiring state agencies to consider skills learned by veterans when they apply for licenses for various jobs.
The move, for example, could streamline the process for a former U.S. Army medic who wants to be licensed as a nurse by eliminating the need for training in areas where the veteran already has experience.

I’m with you. A lot of it is tongue-in-cheek, I think, but there is a dreariness to constant pessimism. Like there have never been tough times before and we’re living through some unique dark times. We’re such special victims.

I understand pessimism, but after the exhilaration of few four-letter words, what does it get you?

As for negativity, it is worth noting that Illinois was not experiencing prosperous times before the Crash of 2008. Things have been more difficult here for quite some time. Michigan was another state that was suffering before the general collapse.

Irish, you and I were goombata the other day about the importance of our state parks and historical sites.
Is it a stretch to devote a few bucks, bend some rules, and give a lot of lost kids the opportunity to put their shoulders to it, learn a work ethic and make a lasting contribution.

Forgive me. Anyone want to put these young men at loose ends to the test? Challenge them with the promise of hard work outdoors, short pay and the chance for a sense of accomplishment, while they build something that lasts for all of us?
They’d come running for the chance.
Last time out, Bill Brady suggested a CCC for Illinois youth. I said at the time, if he meant it, I’d back him until the last dog died.
He didn’t meaon it. I’d walk through hell with a full gasoline can for anyone who did.

STL, that was not intentional, but yeah, dude, I get it. Very bad man, you are, lol.
Seriously, if I could pull off anything in my life, putting at-risk volunteer young men and women to work in the country would be it.
The Peace Corps is too far away, abstract and for rich kids. I’d love for a kid from Austin to rebuild Lowden State Park, or a broke country boy from Macoupin County to improve Shawnee National Forest.
They would do an incredible job, and we’d all be better for it.
Give the kids a chance to experience and see the fruit of their labor, show them a different world, and let them build a legacy that no one can take from them and we can enjoy for generations.
Give the kids who want to get out another option, an honorable option, other than the military.
I am blown away by the commitment of those in the military, but this old fat man is sick to death of seeing teenagers and mothers getting killed protecting the heroin kings of Afghanistan.
I’ll always be ashamed for that.
Put the kids to honorable, productive work here. Like I said, until the last dog dies…
