Gov. Pat Quinn, facing a Democratic primary challenge from former White House chief of staff Bill Daley, on Thursday picked up the backing of Rep. Luis Gutierrez and Rep. Danny Davis, endorsers with followings among Hispanic and African American voters.
The rest of the Illinois Democratic delegation here I contacted on Thursday—including Sen. Dick Durbin—are not taking sides at this early stage in the 2014 primary, heating up with the news last week that Attorney General Lisa Madigan would not be jumping into the contest.
“I was staying out of it when there were three,” Rep. Mike Quigley told me. “I never do it (endorse) before petitions are filed.”
Gutierrez, who is part of the bi-partisan House “Group of Seven” negotiating an immigration legislative package here said Quinn’s help on immigration issues was a factor in his decision.
“I don’t believe that I am taking sides when I support the incumbent governor of the State of Illinois,” Gutierrez told me. “The incumbent governor of Illinois has a very rich history of support for issues that are very dear and important to me. Amongst those issues are immigration, but also education and economic development. […]
Davis, in backing Quinn told me, “I represent the governor, he lives in my congressional district. So one could not expect me to do anything but support one of my constitutients.”
Rep. Bobby Rush told me at some point he will make an endorsement—later on, after he hears more about plans to curb urban violence and create jobs.
As Sweet reports, the rest of the delegation appears to be remaining neutral.

It’s also pretty telling for Bill Daley. There really isn’t a candidate that is energizing on either side of the field.

Expect the number of neutral members of the Congressional delegation to decrease with future endorsements of the Governor. With Lisa out of the mix, there is no way they are going to stay neutral or endorse Daley when an incumbent Governor from their own party is running for re-election; especially when his chances of winning the primary and even the general seem to improve by the day. When is Daley going to officially announce that he is (or is not) officially in this race?

This pretty much quashes my idea that Rep. Gutierrez could enter and be competitive in the upcoming primary.

Not a shock, but interesting to know if Bill had his brother make a call to Cong. Gutierrez first. Even though it was truly a political marriage of convenience, RMD did launch LG into relevance. Memories sure don’t last.

It’s extremely important to remember regarding pat quinn that without his victory in 2010 bear in mind, foster, duckworth, schneider, bustos, enyart aren’t members of congress, jan doesn’t have the north shore to troll for fundrai$ing.

—–it’s not hockey season so I don’t know what quigley is doing with his free time since he only seems to either be playing hockey or showing up at blackhawks events.

I’d like to see some results from his plan to curb urban violence and create jobs in his district. Something more than a “summit” or “town hall”.
He’s only been a Congressman for what… 20 years?

“….RMD did launch LG into relevance….” not sure I agree. LG was elected before RMD ran for Mayor and very visible. besides Luis the Lip has his own issues going back to his cast of characters when he was in the Ald. chair. not surprising that he and Davis, who ran against RMD, would support Quinn.

Davis gives an excellent reason for his endorsement; even if the primary would go the other way, Daley really shouldn’t hold the Quinn endorsement against him, especially if he supports Daley at that time.

Danny Davis probably doesn’t endorse Danny Davis, when all is said and done. Danny always keeps an open mind.
Gutierrez will get a piece of the action and back Daley. This is still Chicago.

No. Harold Washington did. Gutierrez was first elected to the Chicago City Council in the special elections of 1986 that gave Washington control of the council from the Eddies.

Lot of truth there. Same with the super-majorities.
But that doesn’t mean they wouldn’t all turn around and stick it to him anyway.
In all honesty, I really don’t know whose endorsement is worth much anymore.
I know Burke and Emil kicking in cash to Quinn for tv spots against Hynes was huge.
And black radio turning on Hynes over the Washington spot was huge, too.
The warlords of “The Machine?” Not many can beat the TV in the living room.

This development is really not unexpected. These 2 U.S. Reps. have been supportive of Pat Quinn’s cause for Governor in the past and they are just showing loyalty to him through thick and thin. It IS a good sign, however, as well, for the Governor in the African-American and Latino Communities for the upcoming Primary….
