State Dems to consider slating

Posted in:

* From a press release…

Democratic Party of Illinois Chairman Michael J. Madigan announced Thursday that the party’s state central committee will meet Sunday, September 22 to discuss the slating of statewide candidates for next year’s General Election.

“We plan to have a vital campaign in every region of the state and this meeting will give the candidates an opportunity to convey the strengths they bring to the ticket,” Chairman Madigan said.

The meeting will take place on Sunday, September 22 at 2 p.m. in the Governor’s Ballroom at the State House Inn, located at 101 East Adams Street in Springfield. Members of the public are encouraged to attend.

The democratic state central committee is composed of 38 members, one man and one woman elected from each congressional district. Each member will have a weighted vote in selecting the nominee that is equal to the number of Democratic ballots cast in their congressional district in the February 2, 2010 primary election.

DPI hasn’t slated statewide candidates in a primary since Lisa Madigan first ran for attorney general. [ADDING: I was reminded by a commenter that DPI slated Paul Mangieri in 2006 for treasurer. He lost to Alexi Giannoulias.]

  1. Interesting. What mischief is afoot here?

  2. Quinn & Daley is the only contested state wide Democratic primary, right?

    Comment by Bill White Thursday, Sep 12, 13 @ 11:32 am

  3. Other than Quinn-Daley, there are no contested statewide races. Daley didn’t even contest the Cook County slating. If Quinn somehow manages to not get slated by the State Party, that would be a heck of an achievement. It’s entirely possible though.

    The fact that the Speaker/Chairman is on board for this bit of theater makes me wonder what’s up. He’s not big on party meetings.

  5. Open to the public, we assume?

    Can’t wait to see the footage of that meeting. And perhaps a few protests.

    Good times.

  7. –Open to the public, we assume?–

    It says the public is enouraged to attend.

    I guess we’ll find out if any of those LaRouchies are still alive. I haven’t seen the dude with the sandwich board in front of the Wrigley Building in years.

  8. I am going on a limb and say categorically they will endorse Jesse White. Ok, one more. Lisa Madigan too!

    Comment by MrGrassroots Thursday, Sep 12, 13 @ 12:00 pm

  9. Ok, one more. I know Madigan wants to balance the ticket with a downstater. Frerichs too for Treasurer.

  10. So is that, like, another mail piece and robocall on top of the one the Cook Dems send?

    I moved to Illinois in 2002 help me out here.

    Comment by Will Caskey Thursday, Sep 12, 13 @ 12:03 pm

  11. 2006 Rich. Paul Mangieri ring a bell?

    Comment by Juice Thursday, Sep 12, 13 @ 12:03 pm

  12. Thanks for pointing out the last time there was a slating was for the benefit of Lisa Madigan. So, is Mike Madigan anti-Quinn or anti-Daley?

    Comment by Just Me Thursday, Sep 12, 13 @ 12:07 pm

  13. Since there is only one race in dispute, I am going out on my own limb to say that I am guessing Bill Daley will end up paying for his strong-arm tactics with the Madigans. Of course Quinn isn’t paying the Chairman right now….so maybe that former handgun guy is it!

    Comment by Raising Kane Thursday, Sep 12, 13 @ 12:10 pm

  14. This may end up being a slam dunk for Quinn, made possible by Party Chairman Madigan. This may not end well for Bill Daley.

    Comment by NW Illinois Dem Thursday, Sep 12, 13 @ 12:13 pm

  15. JUST ME

    You have to understand Madigan’s approach to politics and life in general.

    He is not “anti anybody”, rather he is “pro somebody”

  16. === I guess we’ll find out if any of those LaRouchies are still alive. ===

    I would pay money to see that. Bullhorns and sandwich boards for all.

    Comment by Formerly Known As... Thursday, Sep 12, 13 @ 12:16 pm

  17. How much fun would it be if MJM had Daley and Quinn speak, take a couple Q’s … ajourn… and come back and Madigan announce “No Endorsement”?

    Both Quinn and Daley, singing for their supper now find themselves spinning an “No Endorsement” is good for them…

    Comment by Oswego Willy Thursday, Sep 12, 13 @ 12:18 pm

  18. Looking into my crystal ball, I see the Governor asking the Speaker to slate candidates this time around.

    Comment by Phineas J. Whoopee Thursday, Sep 12, 13 @ 12:33 pm

  19. ===Looking into my crystal ball,===

    You don’t need a crystal ball on this one, just a subscription.

    Comment by Rich Miller Thursday, Sep 12, 13 @ 1:22 pm

  20. Good theater, but outcome is predetermined.

    Who will call that out, and not even bother to attend? e.g Daley with Cook Co slating.

    Comment by walkinfool Thursday, Sep 12, 13 @ 2:48 pm

  21. And when DPI slated Lisa, that begat Friends & Family, which was considerably more involved than a flyer or a robo call. I can’t imagine Madigan getting that involved on behalf of Quinn, but who knows? That’s MJM’s great signature; he’ll keep us all guessing.

    Comment by ZC Thursday, Sep 12, 13 @ 4:58 pm

  22. ===that begat Friends & Family===

    Um, no. That program was started long before.

    But that’s when the media found out about it.
