Is Rauner planning to save his personal funds for the general? I have heard the $50 million figure thrown around but it seems like he’s been raising money pretty aggressively thus far. For comparison, Quinn spent about $14 million for the entirety of 2010 between his own campaign fund and the Quinn/Simon fund.

Sneedless to say, that is why Payton Prep Clouter Bruce rauner got in front of the Daley withdrawl and made it all about “taking back Illinois” and not about how Daley and PPC are different, and How Bill Daley, and Rahm Emanuel, and Rich Daley, and Arne Duncan … how they all are the same… as the Payton Prep Clouter Bruce Rauner.
Thank goodness the other 3 candidates are focusing on PPC Rauner and defining their Republicanism through the Prism of Bruce Rauner and not calling each other “RINO”s or anything …

To quote John F. Kennedy, sometimes political parties require too much loyalty. Bill Daley is one of those Democrats who puts the interests of the state ahead of political party. Rare - but that’s called leadership folks. And the lack of leadership in Springfield is why young parents are taking a look at other states, with better schools, better economies, better quality of life.

If Rauner gets out of the primary, he will win the General. And despite what Brady said, he’s got probably the best shot to emerge from the primary. Want to know who the other contenders are worrying about? Look who they’re taking shots at - Rauner.

If Rauner truly is Daley’s ideological soul mate, speaking as a Democrat, I’d actually see that as a plus factor.
Daley is not the corporate demon incarnate some people would like to make him (especially now that he’s dropped out and he’s easy to kick). Not saying he would have been a good governor but he doesn’t deserve some of the flack that’s been thrown his way these past 48 hours.
My problem with Rauner is the same I had with Romney: I have _no idea_ what Rauner stands for. Is he a New Democrat in disguise, aka a moderate Republican? Maybe. But maybe not. He’ll keep us all guessing right up until the day he would take office; there’s no other way he could navigate first winning the GOP nomination and then the general. And I have no interest in placing such bets, which is why if it’s Rauner vs Quinn I’m pretty sure I have to stick with Quinn.

It looks like all the entrenched special interests and other candidates are singling out Rauner for attack. This is a very good sign for him. He hopes to the Chris Christie of Illinois. His association with Rahm, could actually help in that regard. Just like Christy as a republican picked up most of the democratic votes in New Jersey.
He has a vision for what he thinks is best for Illinois, and he really doesn’t care what the vocal critics think. And he has a great deal of money so that he doesn’t need to be beholded to the typical election funders, etc. That could be a pretty formidable combination this election cycle.

I noticed you had a similar Bill Daley fan post yesterday. What exactly about him do you like so much?
Personally I fail to see any interest (be it state or political party) that Bill Daley has taken into account at any point during his political bid besides his own selfish interest. He got into the race due to a selfish and vain fleeting fancy and he has quit the race for selfish reasons to protect his pride that couldn’t handle any criticism of his person at all let alone the stinging wound of a likely loss to Pat Quinn in the primary.

Partisan shmartizan - in Illinois it’s reformers vs. The Combine at least as often as Democrats vs. GOP. Didn’t Richard Daley all but admit he voted for George W. Bush? How many state Republicans loathed (let alone failed to support) Peter Fitzgerald and were happy to have him retire even though he was the most popular Republican in the state at the time?

hisgirlfriday — I liked a Bill Daley candidacy because Illinois needs to shake up the Springfield status quo. I spent years volunteering for our two Democratic Presidents - Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. Daley was an excellent Sec of Commerce under Clinton and has held leadership posts throughout his life. On top of that, someone with private sector experience — something lacking in Springfield. Finally, had Daley won I think the Springfield status quo would have been rocked. Daley would have a different style of leadership in dealing with entrenched powers like Madigan, Cullerton, etc. Time for a change.

All chuckling aside, this might be a good piece of help to a guy running in a primary. With all the focus on extreme righties all the time, there is plenty of disdain among voters for extreme lefties too. This could be more helpful that people might think.

W/S. I’ll type slower! Just kidding friend. I’m stating that GOP primary voters in Suburban Cook and similar places may place some value on Bill Daley’s opinion of Rauner. There are still plenty of conservative Dems on the NW and SW sides who are just as uncomfortable with their extreme (left) flanks and there are Republicans who worry about their extreme right side. These two guys are both considered moderates within their respective parties. This race will be won with a slender advantage. Daley could help Rauner. Is that a clearer explanation?

Oy Vey! WS. Let’s go this route. When the GOP harder right is criticized as the Fox News and IR kool aid crowd, just juxtapose it with the MSNBC and MoveOn.org crowd. Without a hard race at the top of the ticket, I’m willing to suggest some Conservative Dems will look at Rauner. Daley’s words might also resonate with some very moderate GOPers. I am suggesting, by experience, that there are enough of these types out there to make a difference in a close race.

Interesting. Rauner knows being from Chicago, he can’t possibly compete on ideological terms with other Republicans like Bill Brady. So he’s going to do something different - be that proverbial ‘New Republican’ everybody always talks about - he’s not about social issues, he’s about economics.
And he’s not about to play down his Chicago ties. In reality, he can’t. They exist - so why not play them up.
Rauner’s playing a little bit of a long game here. What everybody on the Republican side sees as a weakness in his Chicago ties (today) can very easily turn into a a giant strength tomorrow.
Here’s why. The pension funding crisis for both the City of Chicago and Cook County are far worse than the State of Illinois. And whether Republicans like it or not, the economic health of the City of Chicago/Cook County is extraordinarily important to the State of Illinois in general. And it’s going to be a brutal process to deal with (in both cases), and you better have adults at the table. Preferably with more than a third grade understanding of economics, like apparently is the case with our current governor.
Regardless of where one stands on state pension funding, ask yourself if our current governor been a ’strength’ in the process?
Now imagine in particular the City of Chicago pension funding. They are in every bit as bad, if not worse shape than the State of Illinois. And with less resources. Do you want adults at the table, or ‘Squeezy - Part 2′?
There’s reasons Daley, and probably Emanuel, would prefer Rauner to Quinn. Because deals can be cut, and things can get worked out. Because the one thing Illinois can’t have is for Chicago to be viewed as simply being another Detroit. That’s extremely bad for the entire state.
That narrative doesn’t fit well with a fair piece of the Republican party, and also a fair piece of the Democratic party. But at some point we’ve just got to get the adults into the room, people who understand what is at stake (unlike our accidental governor), and address some of these problems.

Believe it or not, it’s possible to view the world outside of cable TV yakfests.
I think Daley just demonstrated he wasn’t appealing to anyone. And I’ve yet to see any polling that suggests Rauner has any traction with anyone except insiders who like the promise of his money.

Points well taken WS. Rauner isn’t slipping in any poll I’ve seen. On the contrary, he’s edged up a little. I disagree that Daley doesn’t appeal to anyone. We’ll never know how many would have voted for him now he’s out. The Daley’s still have plenty of supporters in Chicago and Cook County. I’m saying his kind words toward Rauner could help. We’ll see. Ok, Payton Prep Clouter Bruce Rauner is not about “deals” unless it means moving to Chicago to get his denied Daughter a seat in Payton Prep. Rauner has made it quite clear, to everyone, this is going to be Wisconsin or Indiana, and the only deal is the DEMOCRATIC majorities in the General Assembly doing what “We” say, or he will shut the state down, Constitution or not.
Further, the only history Rauner has in dealmaking in the public secotr is making money off …pensions and charter schools … for him and his investors. PPC Rauner is not selfless, Rauner is all about “We” and how “We” can get money, while driving his denied, but clouted Daughter.. to Payton Prep.
If you listen to Rauner, then you are not HEARING Rauner. PPC is about “my way”, which does not work wne working with a General Assembly. Funny, though, I will give you that!

Bruce Rauner is the worst kind of candidate because while “shaking things up” sounds so kool, understsanding the parameters of how things need to be constitutional, and not being the ultimate insider/hypocrite is not seen as “swell” or “good”…
No matter how “we” thinks it is.

Sure. Never waste a crisis, like a recession, to try and get out of your lawful obligations.
Meanwhile, Emanuel can take his TIF slush funds — that are starving the schools — to put folks out of business on the South Side to build a “basketball arena” for DePaul.
And remember, it’s all about the basketball. Coach Ray and all that. Nothing to do with the casino and its contracts the insiders are dying for.

OS, been over this before. Don’t forget the impact of the federal ‘Supremacy Clause’ on the state constitutional guarantee over pensions. Hasn’t happened yet, but it’s on the horizon (up in Michigan).
It looks like you are primarily hanging your hat on that state constitutional guarantee. Better ask yourself what happens if a federal bankruptcy court in another state with virtually the same type of state guarantee issues a ruling that the constitutional guarantee only applies to the currently funded portions of retiree benefits.
That’s where Michigan looks to be heading (in court).
Funny things tend happen in reality when federal bankruptcy court decisions meet ‘guarantees’, regardless of who makes them.

Again, the state constitution matters today, but you better plan for a ‘what if’ scenario that tomorrow (or the day after) things can change - drastically.
The reality is that what we have right now (for both parties) isn’t working. And things are only going to get a lot tougher. Is Rauner the answer - don’t know. but what we’ve got in place right now is really a pretty miserable excuse for a governor. And I have doubts about many candidates on the Republican side.

This is precisely why I would not vote for Rauner even if he’s the only candidate on the ballot. I would write in Oscar the Puppy if no other option were available. [I would consider voting for Grumpy Cat, but she is a resident of Arizona.]

Don’t have to. I just find Rauner’s approach to this extremely interesting, and I wanted to explore it a little deeper. Besides, it’s pretty obvious that there’s a considerable number of Democrats who are not very enthused about their current ‘choices’, so let’s see where things go.

Not hoping or wishing away the state constitution. But when there’s ongoing litigation out there occurring at the federal level over a state constitutional pension ‘guarantee’ that is extremely similar to Illinois, I’d be a fool not to take into account that the federal courts can change or ‘re-define’ that guarantee into something other than what everyone once assumed.
That’s reality. Nobody’s kicking the Constitution to the curb.

He scared away two, supposedly, powerful challengers and locked up every organization (on paper) in the state.
That’s a good start for a primary election six months away.
Look, I get it that Pat Quinn has never been the most popular guy, in some circles, for decades.
But you’re all ignoring the facts staring you in the face.
Lisa Madigan, she of the 60% plus elections and millions in fundraising — didn’t have the guts and took a pass.
She blamed it on her old man. Apparently, after shaking down millions from contributors for years, she discovered her old man was speaker, lol, and she couldn’t run for governor.
She’s going to regret that day when she blew off the president in the Oval Office and cost the Dems a Senate seat in the midst of the financial crisis.
The old man could have taught her; once refused, presidents don’t ask again. No federal judgeship for you.
Bill Daley — of the Daleys (like Plantagets in Illinois) lost his nerve and took a pass.
He, like Lisa, was too scared of losing.
Where are the other Dem candidates willing to knock down this profoundly unpopular incumbent Quinn?

The guy beat a great young candidate in the last primary.

Here is the thing: Mighty Quinn and his team ought not to take their eyes off the long road ahead.
Every day, you need to believe you can win.
But the day you think you cannot lose, you are vulnerable.
Honestly, unless Rauner is planning on using that $50 mill to cut every swing voter a check or stuff money in their ears so they cannot hear, I dont think it gets Rauner across the finish line.
But a guy with $50 million or $10 million is still dangerous, even if he is a Mitt Romney clone.

Governor Pat Quinn is the strongest candidate with the backing of powerful members of the Democratic party. The Republican candidates are already making Quinn look good in comparison. They are conducting a primary campaign that will remove any hope for a two-party political system in Illinois.
