Your Friday moment of Zen

Posted in:

* It’s been a crazy day. Actually, it’s been a bit of a crazy week. So let’s chill for a moment, shall we?

Here’s a pic I took yesterday of Oscar the Puppy…

* A commenter who owns the same breed of dog as Oscar wrote here not long ago about the phenomenon known as the “nut run.” It’s when dogs just go a little crazy and start running around like a bat outta heck.

When the weather is nice, I’ll take my laptop and Oscar to the back yard. If I’m too busy to play, he’ll sometimes go on a nut run.

Here’s the tail end of one from yesterday. The little guy had already slowed down a lot by the time I started recording his fun

  1. I call my cat’s version of that the “psycho kitty freakout.” For what it’s worth, it appears to be correlated to a recent trip to the litter box.

  2. It might be good for all us to go into the back yard for a nut run…..

  3. Our previous dog and now our current dog do that as well. We call it “dog on fire.”

It cracks us up every time.

  4. Our dog does the same - we call those times “psycho dog”.

  5. I had a Welsh Terrier (like a smaller Airedale) who would do one of those runs after every bath. Tear around the house at full speed, come to screeching halts, up and down on the furniture.

  6. Do you have squirrels out there by the lake? Has Oscar displayed any interest in chasing/ combatting them? Our 13+ year old cocker spaniel has a deep and abiding obsession with them. Just say “squirrel” and it’s off to the races, often in figure 8 loops around several large trees in our side & back yards….

  7. I envision that Pat Quinn did a “nut run” as soon as he heard the judge’s ruling on the withholding of pay for the legislators; especially since the Gov. used to run on a cross country team.

  8. ECI, let’s keep it mellow.

===Has Oscar displayed any interest in chasing/ combatting them? ===

For the moment, he just likes to watch them.

However, he has developed a keen fondness for a little chipmunk that has a burrow hole next to my house. Oscar finally caught up to the thing the other day and batted him around a bit, but it was all in fun and when I came outside and saw it I pulled Oscar off. But now he’s completely obsessed with that chipmunk.

  9. I suspect we could all use a nut run once in a while….

  10. Much like the famous “Almond Joy” criminal insanity defense: “Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don’t.”

  11. Mellow, indeed.

Perfect add on today to just chill and enjoy the moment.

Thanks for sharing, I know I need moments of Zen, the timing was perfect.

  12. My dad, who has for years trained black labs, calls them “puppy runs.”

    Comment by John A Logan Friday, Sep 27, 13 @ 2:16 pm

  13. We have a yorkie-poo who does the same thing indoors. If you play wrestle with her for a few minutes she will stop all of a sudden, look at you, then run like a bat-outta-hell around the couch as fast as she can several times. Her ears and face fur pinned back to the side of her face from the wind! My wife and I laugh our butts off at her.

  14. Growing up, my grandma kindly referred to that as going cuckoo.

I agree… If the post has a pic of Oscar in it, and it’s Friday afternoon, let’s keep politics out of the comments for sanity sake :)

  23. Thanks for sharing Oscar with us. I have had dogs and cats in my life. The young ones would go on these energy burn offs both indoors and out. I would come home at night and find the scatter rugs near the doors had lived up to their name–scattered. The animals aged out of that and became much more sedate later.

  24. Nut Run, Puppy Run, scatter run, whatever we call these runs you can’t beat the sheer utter glee on their faces.
