SEIU immigration ad targets Rodney Davis

A new union-backed ad buy will look to drum up support for passing comprehensive immigration reform in the House of Representatives by targeting vulnerable chamber Republicans, according to a statement.

The Service Employees International Union said Thursday they are spending more than $500,000 on attack ads targeting seven House Republicans who face tough re-elections next year, and House Speaker John Boehner. SEIU has already spent more than $2.5 million promoting immigration reform and a pathway to citizenship, the group said.

According to the statement, the 30 seconds ads will target Boehner in the Washington, D.C. market while going after Reps. Gary Miller of California, Joe Heck of Nevada, Mike Coffman of Colorado, Rodney Davis of Illinois, David Joyce of Ohio, John Kline of Minnesota and Michael Grimm of New York in their home districts. 1. It’s not just unions, but the Chamber, ag interests, and some evangelicals bringing the heat on the Senate bill. That’s going to be hard to stand up to for Davis.

  2. I wonder how immigration reform polls in the 13th CD and what the demographics are there? I also wonder how much Davis not being publicly supportive of reform actually hurts him there?

  3. Agreeed Big Deal, this is probably not a great ad for the 13th District.

  4. Perhaps another example of out-of-state interest groups running ads here when they are clueless about the local lay-of-the-land.

  5. It just screams generic DC ad campaign. They didn’t even bother to put in his phone number; they just used the general House Operator’s switch.

I never did understand the “(Insert Politician Here) hates X” attack ad campaign. Do they ever move the needle, or are they simply something to point to when someone asks what an interest group has done on the issue?

  6. Davis may gain support from this.

  7. Seems like a waste of money to not target the House Rules Committee Chair — that’s the committee that decides which bills will be voted upon, similar to the IL House. I agree with Anonymous that Davis could actually benefit from it.

  8. Anyone being attacked by SEIU must be doing something right…
