* Gov. Pat Quinn told Chicago Tonight that he believes his veto of legislative salaries is what forced a final resolution to the pension reform debate. Watch…
Trouble is, the governor vetoed the salaries in July. A judge struck down his veto as unconstitutional in September and legislators were immediately paid all their past-due wages. The pension reform bill then passed in December - long after Quinn’s veto was taken out of the equation.
But he’ll probably continue crowing about his “great victory” throughout the upcoming campaign as long as reporters let him slide.
* Meanwhile, check out how Quinn’s spokesperson jumped into the fray right off the bat and refused to allow the WTTW reporter to ask a question about the state’s unpaid bills…

It was critical to have the Supremes rule on the Unconstitutional Veto. Quinn, realizing he/Governor’s Office would lose, made sure to withdraw the appeal, precisely for statements like that in the coming year.
Glorious Leader Pat Quinn refuses to see the damage he put upon the Co-Equal branches, and then not allowing a ruling to stomp out stunts like this feeds the narrative of “Pat Quinn - Getting tought with the Legislature” when in reality, the only branches tat got tough was the Judicial by striking down the Veto, and the Legislative, by ignoring the Executive, to get a Pension Bill out and voted on for the Executive to sign.
All done in spite …of the Executive … not because of a stunt by the Executive.

I find interesting that we often associate someone from down south as less than intelligent yet his biggest base is in Cook County.

Well, I am glad you could lump us all of Cook County togther. That is no better than your half-hearted attempt to innoculate it by comparing it to downstate. What, you can’t make a point without having it be about upstate/downstate Again, stay classy.
I guess Quinn got 100% of Cook County every time he ran too…

It also has a population of 5.2 million, which is 40 percent of the state’s population. Do the math without the counties.

Really? Quinn got 900K of his 1.7 plus million votes only in Cook.
900K was not going to beat Bill Brady.

To the well read and learned here on this blog, Quinn was being less than truthful in his remarks. To a large portion of the electorate, he is right on the money. It was not so long ago that I can recall that the general response to Quinn’s grandstanding on this issue was quite positive. As much as I respect those who opine here, I doubt the entire clan of capfax commenters would be the difference in a close gubernatorial election. The contrast between those folks here who are steeped in the lore and actualities of the political scene and the stereotypical voter is wide and deep.

Welcome back Rich (hoping you’re not holed up somewhere with a laptop).
Stopping the pay of legislators will be a strong campaign meme by Quinn. It will be understood by most as forcing reform on a “do-nothing” legislature, as well as facing down the “evil Madigan.”
That’s why he did it in the first place. Squeezy wasn’t working with the public.
The closer an election, the more simplistic and less factual the messages. They work, and probably always have, in our democracy.
Kind of like the “socialized medicine” meme, which remains popular with some, while having no relation to ACA reality.
Still bad to mess with the Separation of Powers principle IMHO, ever.

You are on target. Facts don’t matter, just whatever story the public believes. Now that Quinn is in full campaign mode (and has been for some time), the distortions will continue to flow from now until election day.
Prediction (not really, it’s too obvious): The next “big lie” will be Quinn’s claim the FY15 budget will be balanced.

This guy really looks like Pat Quinn. But I can’t imageine the Real Pat Quinn using the Blagojevich playbook to have his flack interrupt an interview and tell the reporter that legitimate questiosn are off limits.
