* Tom Cross’ campaign has a new Internet ad attacking Mike Frerichs. Rate it

From Washington to Springfield the typical politicians are failing us.

Dishonest politicians like Mike Frerichs.

Here’s Frerichs in his very first ad:

“In 2006 I ran for the State Senate where I led by example by cutting my own pay and ending free lifetime healthcare for legislators.”

The problem? It’s not true.

Frerichs voted against ending lifetime health benefits and voted to increase his own pay. Twice.

Now, Frerichs expects us to believe this:

“If you believe that what we need is accountability and honesty and ethics in the Treasurer’s office, then I ask you to join this campaign.”

Mike Frerichs.

Just another dishonest politician we can’t trust… especially with our tax dollars.

  1. “B, B-”

    It’s out there, it’s a “shot”, its cheap…

The “Shrinking Violet” Mike Frerichs will continue to shrink in stature when facts or actually understand the skill of running statewide fail him and his Crew. It appears at every Tweet, Press Release, and Snarky false remark.

Cross’ best assets against Frerichs are Frerichs’ ego, and Amateur Hour Crew, which were hidden, remember, and this child-like excitement of trying to be relevant, without being skilled at the politics.

The Ad might make the Kids and Frerichs take another Dopy shot… So in that aspect, it might be a “B+”

  2. “Cheap” = cost of running the Ad.

    Apologies.

  3. I’m not sure the “politician” label is going to be a good strategy for Cross, given his tenure. Other than that, this is a smart way to capitalize on a blunder by Frerichs early on.

  4. Frerichs is lucky average voters aren’t paying attention and isn’t facing a primary. Have to agree though I have been disappointed with his rollout so far, especially since Kwame has decided not to run. There needs to be a new generation of Dem leadership in Illinois, but it’s earned not given and nothing has really been earned yet.

  5. A rapid, factually accurate response? Check.

The Cross campaign just managed to do in 1 weekend what the Frerichs campaign could not do in 1 year.

That alone earns them an “A”. Future ads will be subject to stricter scrutiny.

  6. Although @OswegoWilly makes a good point. Sometimes it’s perfectly fine to let your opponent hang themselves.

  7. Doesn’t Cross have a primary to win first? Not sure he will be happy in the Treasurer’s Office even if he wins. It’s a pretty obscure office.

  8. Tom nailed Mike. Mike better return fire at some point…but does the average voter actually care who is the state treasurer? How does that office effect Mr&Mrs Joe Illinois? If this race is gonna get ugly, I think Mike will be buried by Cross. Tom has it in him to play dirty…does Mike? Better question: Who has better name ID?

  9. It will be quite comical if Cross wastes resources attacking the Democrat nominee, and then goes on to lose the primary to Bob Grogan.

  10. Any ad that plays to how tall Big Mike Frerichs, is a sure loser for Cross. Rather than point out how tall Frerichs is, Cross should point out how long he has run Springfield. If the message is: “Frerichs is tall and Cross is small” — Tom loses.

Comment by dogboy Monday, Jan 27, 14 @ 11:43 am

  11. -econ prof You assume Grogan knows how to spell win. Bad assumption.

  13. === If this race is gonna get ugly ===

=== Tom has it in him to play dirty…does Mike? ===

Frerichs went negative and started calling people names before he even made his formal “announcement”. He’s throwing around ugly rhetoric and empty talking points without any real reason: https://capitolfax.com/2014/01/08/frerichs-tries-to-coattail-onto-the-minimum-wage-issue/

  14. The fact that Cross can run a strong campaign makes the failures of HRO more disappointing.

  15. Winning return of serve.

    Next.

  16. Anything Cross does to re-focus this race on SIZE — FRERICHS wins!

Mike Frerich stands tall for taxpayers and is prepared to tackle the fiscal problems found in Treasurer Rutherford’s office (who by the way, is another vertically challenged has-been).

Comment by Drallid Monday, Jan 27, 14 @ 4:08 pm

  17. @FakeMikeFrerichs - focus on anything, except on anything I say, any ad I put out, anything I tweet. #TallTales #Pinnochio #ShortMemoryLongOnExcuses

Comment by Oswego Willy Monday, Jan 27, 14 @ 4:13 pm

  18. It’s a legitimate shot, but I think if you google “typical politician” a picture of Tom Cross pops up.

I don’t think there’s anything intrinsically wrong with being a politician. I don’t think Cross does either. It’s kind of lazy and dishonest theme from him.

Comment by wordslinger Monday, Jan 27, 14 @ 7:19 pm

  19. Bob Grogan is actually much more qualified for the Treasurer position than Cross. He’s a CPA, DuPage County Auditor
