Gay marriage law “work of the devil”

Posted in:

* Springfield Bishop Thomas Paprocki was interviewed recently about his exorcism in response to the new gay marriage law

Paprocki told LifeSiteNews that people in today’s permissive society seem to think that hate is associated with not letting people get “what they want.”

“Any good parent will tell you that sometimes you have to discipline your children. Sometimes you have to say ‘no’. Sometimes you even have to punish.”

“When a parent does those things, they’re not being hateful towards their children, they’re actually being very loving by correcting them and showing them the right way to do things,” he said. […]

“We just have to understand that we are going to be facing a lot of opposition and as I said, my whole point for doing the prayer service is realizing it’s the work of the devil that’s behind this.”

  4. How come the ones without any parential experience seem to know exactly what “good parents” would do?

  5. why don’t they take the same approach towards their child abuser priests. tell them “No” and “punish” them?

Comment by PoolGuy Tuesday, Jan 28, 14 @ 2:53 pm

  6. The parent analogy is just plain bad. If my child is gay and wants to marry someone, the government should not deny my child equal rights and protections under the law. I have the personal liberty to ignore irrational priest, but I need the governments help to protect equal rights under the law for my children.

  7. and we, including our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters, are not children to be corrected or punished by Mr Paprocki

Comment by steve schnorf Tuesday, Jan 28, 14 @ 2:56 pm

  8. I don’t have a problem with people having differing views on the subject of gay marriage, though I think the Bishop’s views do border on the hate line. What the Bishop fails to realize, though, is that his beliefs aren’t germane to somebody else’s life. Not everybody shares his beliefs. I’m not sure why he thinks he has a right to impose his viewpoint on others. There is a reason that church and state are separated. This is one of those reasons.

  9. If this guy would say that Father Daniel McCormack’s (or Father Norbert Maday’s, etc.) actions were the “work of the devil,” he would have a lot more credibility.

  10. Parenting has nothing to do with gay marriage. What a terrible analogy and blatant ignorance on display here.

Comment by Jorge Tuesday, Jan 28, 14 @ 3:05 pm

  11. OTOH, Paprocki seemed to be just fine with moving the child molesting priests around the Archdiocese of Chicago back not too long. He was all over that disgusting mass paper drop last week.
If you’re wondering why Mass attendance keeps dropping and the plate is lighter, look in the mirror, Your Eminence.

Comment by Arthur Andersen Tuesday, Jan 28, 14 @ 3:07 pm

  12. Once again the Church is behind the science, people are born gay. Would you punish your child for being left handed or color blind?

Comment by Tom Tuesday, Jan 28, 14 @ 3:13 pm

  13. A red herring to divert our minds off of pedophile
priest’s. As Pope Francis stated ,who am I to judge.

Comment by mokenavince Tuesday, Jan 28, 14 @ 3:14 pm

  14. Bishop Paprocki previously also blamed “the Devil” for the large monetary awards punishing the Church for their scandalous cover-ups for child abusing priests:

“In 2007, Paprocki told a group of judges and lawyers in Michigan that monetary awards to victims of sexual abuse by priests were excessive and that the legal system needed reform.”

‘Today in North America and elsewhere, the law is being used to undermine the charitable works and the religious freedom of the Church,’ Paprocki said four years ago. ‘This attack is particularly directed against bishops and priests, since the most effective way to scatter the flock is to attack the shepherd. We must also use our religious discernment to recognize that the principal force behind these attacks is none other than the devil.’”

  18. well being left handed used to be considered evil or devilish. back in the dark ages.

Comment by PoolGuy Tuesday, Jan 28, 14 @ 3:23 pm

  19. @Tom, many schools used to try to “teach” lefties to righties. And the Bishop is a dunce. So many critical issues to deal with, and he’s focused on trying to demonize two people that love each other. Whatever. Maybe he ought to watch the Popes most recent “who am I to judge” statement.

  23. So is it “the work of the Devil” or just misquided children behaving improperly? Can’t be both, can it?

Or how about a third option? Adults blessed with reason and free will governing themselves as they see fit in the interests of equality for all?

Comment by wordslinger Tuesday, Jan 28, 14 @ 3:40 pm

  24. I think the good Bishop was in the same seminary class as the priest who told me that my wife and I had committed a mortal sin by having children via IVF. Count me a recovering Catholic.

  25. The Bishop has every right to state his beliefs. I do wonder, however, how the church attendance and collection$ have been since his arrival to this diocese. A bishop is promoted in a large part due to his ability to raise the coffers. I wonder if there has been a change, and if so, which way?

  30. I am unaware of any major doctrinal changes within the Roman Catholic Church. Like it or not, Bishop Paprocki’s opinions square with Catholic orthodoxy, including the writings of the previous Pope (Benedict XVI). What exactly is Wensicia referring to?

Comment by Upon Further Review Tuesday, Jan 28, 14 @ 4:59 pm

  31. Wow…..just WOW!! So, God made gays and he’s out to set God straight?

If this fellow wants to exorcise anything, how about stopping over at the Capitol, then head to DC!

  34. I don’t believe the Church claims homosexuals are in line with Satan or states those supporting their recognition are doing the “work of the devil”. This Bishop claims are not in line with Church doctrine, which calls sex between the same sex individuals a sin, but does not say homosexuals, themselves, are evil.

  37. I’m not Catholic but I find it sad and wrong for the Catholic church to chastise the American nuns for being too liberal and this bishop is one of three bishops “investigating” the nuns and their good works.

Comment by persecuted Tuesday, Jan 28, 14 @ 6:37 pm

  38. He has the freedom to express his beliefs and attempt to lead his parishioners. If they disagree, they have the ability to work within the Catholic Church to promote change or to leave it and ignore him.
Ultimately, he should have no influence on any branch of government.
I’m really rooting for his parishioners to push for change and demote this man and his beliefs.

Perhaps it’s because the good bishop’s little photo op was in response to legislation enacted by the General Assembly and timed to coincide with the ceremony when it was signed into law by the governor

    Comment by A. Nonymous Wednesday, Jan 29, 14 @ 5:31 am

  43. To all you people who say his example of parenting has nothing to do with gay marriage are so ignorant that you can’t even see the analogy of what he is referring to.

Comment by Crispy Critter Wednesday, Jan 29, 14 @ 5:56 am

  44. Crispy, you are ignorant as to the definition of the word “ignorant.”

The analogy is straight-forward. No specialized knowledge or high level of sophistication is required to understand it.

If you believe that you are an uneducated child so lacking in sophistication that you are unable to govern yourself, and that you need to be guided, disciplined or punished by the bishop as “father,” well, it’s a free country.

Comment by wordslinger Wednesday, Jan 29, 14 @ 6:15 am

  45. To Wordslinger: Ignorant means a lack of knowledge (it does not mean stupid). Without the knowledge to know what he is referring to you would take this the wrong way. He made a very good statement with a lot of meaning yet so many fail to find the meaning in it so instead start slinging words. Maybe you should refer to the bible so you too could have a knowledge of what he is referring to?
