I’m curious about some of your technological preferences.
1) Do you use an RSS reader? If so, which one?
2) Can you access the Internet and e-mail on your cellphone/PDA? How often do you do it, and for what purpose? What sort of mobile phone do you own?
3) What’s your favorite website for national news?
4) Do you still buy “dead trees” newspapers, or do you read your news online now?
5) How often do you visit my website?

1) Bloglines.
2) Yes, and I find myself doing it more and more when I’m out of the office, particularly to check on comments posted here. I have a Treo 650.
3) I use Google News rather than go to an invididual website.
4) Almost never, unless I’m on a train, plane or dining alone.
5) Too much. lol

5. I visit your website everyday (except Sunday – nothing new on Sunday and sometimes not on Saturday either). I really enjoy your website (and column), I see a lot of wrong being done since I work for a state agency (20 years) and I can get the frustration out by writing about it here. Thank you.

1. No - tried it but decided it wasn’t worth the bandwidth consumed.
2. Yes but never. I have a Moto Razr now but I used to work for Nokia in advanced products. It was quickly apparent to me that wireless net access was addictive. (I’ve got enough problems with poker and solitaire on my PDA.)
3. CNN, Drudge, Trib through out the day; Sun-Times, Daily Herald and Southtown in the morning.
4. Online only; I do pay for some advanced subscriptions.
5. It’s right in line with my other news checks, which is frequent when I’m sitting at my desk.

2) Yes. Only when away from home or office and unable to check laptop. I use it to check breaking news, especially if google alerts come to my phone through my email. Treo 650.

4. Only for long drives - almost entirely online now.
5. Multiple times/day during the week - homepage now
The ablility to scan all of the various outlets for breaking news is really good here, Rich. Thanks for such a great site.

1) I see RSS links at various sites but not really sure what it does.
2) Yes, Capitol Fax Blog is easy to use on my Blackberry from Verizon Wireless. I used to have the Treo 650 and it worked well there too.
3) Drudge Report & Chicago Tribune online
4) Chicago Sun Times print edition daily. I get the Trib Wednesday to Sunday but rarely read it. I do read the Trib online every day.
5) Like Rich, too much.

2) I can, but don’t. I have a Ming right now, a great PDA/net phone. Too bad it’s only sold in china now.

4) yes, for local stuff. The NW Herald, but I liked the Elgin Courier better.
5) Daily. It’s not blocked in China, like illinoize is.

3. Use Google News feeds
4. Chicago SomeTimes and Chicago Tribune (on paper and online with news alerts), NY Times (Sunday on paper)and Washington Post online, follow Google News and Google News Alerts online to other sources
5. First thing in the morning and several times throughout the day when I’m at my desk.

2.) Yes, just for checking my yahoo account or a sports score if I’m away from a computer for an extended period of time.
3.) Multiple favorites - can’t have just one source! NY Times and WSJ are tied for #1
4.) Rarely buy a dead-tree paper. Only when traveling and have no access to computer. Otherwise, it’s all about online news.
5.) I check this site once a day, typically after scanning the Trib and Sun-Times websites in the AM.

No, partly because I don’t want to be bothered with e-mail when I am not at my desk.

I also check out CNN, and headlines from the New York Times and Washington Post.

Chicago Tribune, which I tolerate. I don’t think it is a quality paper, but it is better than nothing. I note that for quality, it is far superior to Chicago’s local television news. I have a few friends who are reporters, but I only watch televised news on election night. For me, a fire on the West Side does not really qualify as “breaking news” unless there have been multiple fatalities. The local news stations apparently disagree with me on that point.
I note that the other major source for news is magazines like The Atlantic and The New Yorker, which I read almost cover to cover. The Atlantic in particular has some outstanding articles.
5) How often do you visit my website?
Too often. When I move from one assignnment to another it clears my mind a bit.

2)i have a crappy cell phone. i dont want to pay extra for all that crap.

4)i get my local paper, the galesburg register mail, though i read the headliens at work online.
5)pretty much all day long while im at work, occasionally on the weekends

4. I subscribe to my local newspaper on-line. Don’t have any papers to throw away weekly but once in a while do miss the supplements.
5. Depends on how interesting your postings are. I’m getting a little tired of the slowness of the Feds though so I might take a break until closer to the election. Don’t really care to read Blogo’s press release of the hour.

1) I use primarily My Yahoo.
2) Never have and it costs money.
3) I have a few of them. I will check Fox News but my favorite website for that is Brain-Terminal.com
4) I’ll still read the Tribune or the Sun-Times or I may check out a lesser read paper like N’Digo or a neighborhood newspaper.
5) I will check everyday as long as I have internet access.

2) Yes, but only occasionally. I’ve got a Motorola V220 that isn’t the greatest for surfing the net. I get to upgrade in September, so I’ll see what is best for the least amount of shekels then.
3) Wall Street Journal. I also like the coverage that Glenn Reynolds does over at Instapundit.
4) Tribune. If I take the train into downtown, Sun-Times. Other than that, I read ‘em online.
5) Everyday during the week. Weekends not so much because comments are shut off.

2) Hated a beeper and avoid a cell phone except for regular phone calls. PDA/phone Internet is just another place for ads. At a desk everyday. Generic Motorola.
3) IE or Netscape. Enough headline pop up.
4) Bought Sunday ChiTrib as I moved around the country. May not be great but better than most and kept me tied to a Chicago orientation. Daily local paper and Sunday SJR. Online news is a pain boring. Right up there with electronic books. Ugh. Scanning a real paper is somehow relaxing. Electroninc is “work”.
5) Far too much. Gotta Miller jones.

5) heh. i have a cot in the corner. i do tend to keep it up on one of the computers on my desk, and check in periodically. tabbed browsing is great for that.

3) Formerly Slate (I liked their daily summary/analysis of news from major papers), now HuffPo, but always looking for something better. Too much pop stuff on FluffPo, blogs are often snarky, smug and predictable, but the remaining 33 percent feeds my need when it comes to browsing breaking national news. But I’m much more innarested in following local and state news anyway. I prefer the variety of news feeds found on the right column of Capfax.
4) Rarely buy, but am always happy to pick up whatever is free, something about the tactile nature of holding paper and ink in my hands. Yet, I let my local paper subscription expire mainly because I got tired of the papers piling up and the lack of solid local and state coverage. Too much canned and often chopped up copy which can easily be bested with a quick trip to the Net.
5) Usually first thing in the morning and then later in the evening to catch up on comments.

1. I use Google IG.
2. I could get on the internet, but it’d cost me extra on my somewhat older Nokia.
3. I read the NY Times, Google News, and a news-oriented message board.
4. I read most everything online, but I do subscribe to The Economist.
5. Very rarely. I read the daily fax, but I find it to be s far too critical of Blagojevich and too easy on Republicans.

1.) I check your website for any stories I might have missed on the right side of the screen.
2.) No - not sure if I want to be that connected to news when I’m in the field anyway.
3.) Associated Press, CNN, and FOX
4.) I partake in the daily CLIPs in our office. We skim all the papers - except NW Indiana Times, Chicago Defender and Daily Southtown, and the Star, which I can only get online for now.
I read the actual newspapers for both the Sun-Times & Tribune daily and the Tribune on Sundays. You can’t get the pictures online - and sometimes those tell story.
5.) About 2-3 times during the week.

1) Bloglines lets me read blogs, mailing lists, parcel tracking, etc in a single long web page.
2) My bottom-of-the-line tracfone has free incoming text, so I use it now and then for incoming e-mail, such as flight delay notifications.

4) buy dead tree SJ-R.
5) Rarely visit website. Mostly just interested in the blog posts. Visit the site only when I want to read comments.

2) Yes, but don’t. Too busy “doing more with less”.
3) I have gotten used to your feeds on the right side of the Fax. Cuts down on the “chair time” in front of the screen.
4) I still have to have my sunday paper. I read five newspapers online. (Sun-Times, Tribune, SJR, St. Louis Post, & Belleville newspaper.
5) I am (was?) a “posse member”, thus I am here almost every morning before work and most evenings. Man, I have to get a life!

3. hmmm … no favorites … often visit CNN, but also use Google News
4. sometimes on road trips buy the paper, but almost everything electronically now.
