The Quinn campaign today released a new television ad focusing on Bruce Rauner’s record of laying off workers, outsourcing jobs overseas, jumping through elite tax loopholes, and stashing cash in the Cayman Islands- a notorious tax haven.
Time and time again, Bruce Rauner has shown his willingness to game the system in order to get rich at the expense of everyday people in ways that run counter to his professed love for Illinois. The 30-second TV ad, which includes cited facts about Rauner’s record, will begin running statewide on Tuesday.

Not as effective as the one the Obama campaign ran against Mitt Romney in 2012. This would work better with a little voiceover. A better idea is to just run ads similar to the ads ran against Bill Brady in 2010. Some of them all you have to do is literally change Brady to Rauner.

First observation is; if you’re in another room and are only listening, there’s a problem here. The graphics just don’t look like headlines, but a series of posters. The musical bed (again) doesn’t go well with this. It’s not a good ad. Sudden music blare is an inspiration to click to another channel to watch something else until the commercials are over. There’s something missing in the shop putting these together. They’re hodge-podge. Not good at all.

It’s not the greatest piece of advertising ever, but it hammers home the simplistic “Rauner avoided taxes” message, which may be Quinn’s only hope at this point.

I voted “meh.” Generalized rehash job. Any fact checking out there to see if the vacant factory was a stock photo or belongs to a Rauner company? Or the overseas workers in green outfits belong to a Rauner company?

I just gotta say it. I can’t stay out of this one.
I hate this ad. It’s obviously based on the Obama12 ad blasting Mitt Romney which featured Romney attempting to sing America the Beautiful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ud3mMj0AZZk&app=desktop
That ad worked mainly because Romney is a lousy singer. The irony was apparent.
On the other hand, having your opponent say “I love Illinois” over and over and then put inspirational music behind it and require people to read the negative message is, in my opinion, media advisor malpractice.

Meh. The message that your opponent is a bad guy billionaire and is out to stick it to Joe Sixpack resonates more, as said above, when you are an Obama type (then-)inspirational figure, not a career politician who’s shown an inability to do much beyond living off the public trough.

Seems to use the same approach that a Rauner attack ad used, showing and repeating headlines followed by a countering script — (only some of Rauner’s headlines weren’t real.)
Already getting jaded, but this could have some impact on the general public with a roll out. C+

There is a time tested formula for winning elections… and crappy commercials aren’t a part of it. They have a great issue to use, and they use it poorly. I want Quinn to win, but he has nobody to blame but himself if he loses. What’s the deal?!

Wow. Really? Quinn’s really going to pay for this to air on TV? This is pretty bad for a youtube video. He’s got some pretty laser-focused sludge on Rauner, and Quinn goes for the scattershot, just to miss entirely.

Voted “Meh”, but it’s a “D+” Ad;
Passable to get credit, horrible for the GPA.
Misses the big picture sweet spot by being pocketed in a message that barely connects a narrative that could be a big-time narrative to lead to increasing negatives.
Wouldn’t be on my “brag reel” to get clients…

Why isn’t Quinn hitting home that he clouted his daughter into Walter Payton Prep?
We saw poll numbers today that majority of people in Illinois think he is a reformer and outsider. The Walter Payton incident paints the complete opposite and will get his negatives up. I can’t imagine people in Chicago with families being happy a child from a suburb was able to sneak into one of the best public schools in Chicago at the expense of a Chicago student and Chicago tax dollars.

It’s about time they went negative, but this ad seems very confusing. If you are half watching a TV (like most moms), you may only see Rauner and the Star-Spangled Banner. I’m sure it polled well with the focus group, but how many people pay as much attention to a commercial as a focus group? I’d say average at best. Quinn needs to pull the punches. Knock Rauner for a loop. And I support Quinn.

I voted “Meh.” Sure, it will have an impact on some folks, but they are probably anti-Rauner anyway. And, it’s not what most voters are expecting to hear about because it doesn’t hit home on the key issues facing IL.

Meh. Again with the Cayman national anthem (at least that’s what someone here said.) They could at least Shake Up Springfield and use Yakkity Sax or something. And how is using a Federal tax dodge show he doesn’t love Illinois? Need more about killing seniors and running businesses into the ground to be more effective IMHO.

I am not sure I like the background music but other than that a solid A. Right now it is anybody but Quinn. Yet voters do not have really know Rauner. Quinn has to make the voter think, I will have to take Quinn because I have no choice. That is a very difficult task to do.

In some cases, the state of Illinois could use a round of layoffs in some departments and a significant amount of hiring in other departments.
All I can think of when I watched this, was Quinn needed to clear out CMS after Blago and took a pass. This ad reminded me that a Gov. needs stones to execute his office.

So sad that Quinn can’t come up with something positive he has done and play on that… the sadness being that he hasn’t done much positive for the people of Illinois.

Guy, you’re right, but how can they possibly think when your guy lies based on his audience and refuses debates. It is kind of hard to think when one candidate refuses to give any information about which you could “think”.

A politician that lays off thousands of workers so that he can make millions? A candidate for public office that ships our jobs to China and India? n American leader that uses accounting tricks to avoid paying taxes? An Illinois Governor that stashed money in the Cayman Islands before being convicted? Those who rate this ad “meh” are seriously kidding themselves. This is the first widely distributed ad that lays a blow on Bruce Rauner’s underbelly.
Over the last two years I’ve watched Rauner destroy his political opponents with millions in negative tv ads, now well see if Bruce can take a punch!

He’ll debate Jimbo. Not to worry. It’s just that he’ll do so in a neutral venue. He hasn’t taken the Quinn bait from the start. He’s not going to start now. He did the IEA debate and held his own with a very hostile audience. He doesn’t have any reason or motivation to be in a place with a moderator teeing it up for his opponent and throwing darts at him. He’ll debate. But it will be in the right environment; without screaming people wearing matching tea shirts, face paint and holding faux hand made signs and pitch forks. He does this in a civilized environment and Pat Quinn loses his only edge.

There are two Rauners; one who would never roll as an insider, who is 100% bankrolled by the insider’s insider who pay any freight to get what he wants, and the only party that Rauner likes is the party in power who can give him what he wants; pensions, Clouting his Daughter, contracts, etc…

So a couple of polls come out saying Quinn is NOT viewed as a reformer, and Rauner is seen as identifying with people more. So Quinn doubles down on the message he has tried to burn in that isn’t playing?
So what, we only need another 10,000 rating points to get people to see Quinnis right. . . .is that the thinking here?

Like the ad because it underscores the fraud that is Flip/Mitt Rauner the hands on BizWiz who in the words of Sgt Schultz “knows nothing: about the thieves and perverts on the payroll.
Might have done some with crashing glass after every “I Love ..” make viewer look up and see.
In more traditional times Mitt’s total flip on taxes would sink a campaign. Perhaps PQ needs to remind voters Mitt never says the same thing twice and report that even Mitt does know what Mitt will do if elected.

Let me see if I understand this correctly. If Rauner campaigns as folks say he should - an outsider who doesn’t do the whole typical campaign thing, he would basically be…..Oberweis.
Even Oberweis has seen that this doesn’t work. Campaigns are a set piece. If you go against the grain, it seems you will miss on the various stages of a campaign. When to go positive, when to go negative. Folks here mention good campaign strategists - why have one if you aren’t going to play the game? If you don’t listen to the campaign manager ( who will suggest, surprise, that you accept certain realities of campaigns) you will be at a distinct disadvantage. So, if Rauner wants to win the election he has to enter the fray and, in many respects, adhere to the format. It’s almost as if you don’t appear to be a candidate folks may not recognize you as one.

I find it better constructed than some others do, apparently. I’d give it a 7; it has legs because it directly counterpunches Rauner’s self-promotional pieces he’s rolled out as his own PR firm. This guy is a bum. I’d love to see one website, which ideally becomes a TV spot, that captures all of this guy’s dirty laundry. For me it started innocently enough: a mountain backdrop in his campaign video for Illinois. Yet even that said, this is an elitist with nine estates, and he doesn’t even recognize the state for which he’s running has no mountain range. The ties to Levine, the GTCR scandals, lawsuits and deaths involving seniors, connections to Bain and shipping jobs overseas, three illegla homeowner exemptions, paying off Payton Prep for his kid’s admission, his BS on the minimum wage, his budget “plan” written by an 8th grader, promising a black community credit union a million bucks,…. There’s more, but I type with four fingers and they’re sore!
