“It’s a sign that I’m trying to raise money,” Lewis tells Early & Often. “People have to see that we’re trying to raise money now. We have to do all kinds of other things.”
That includes getting a campaign office to operate out of.
The money comes as petition circulators have begun their work on her behalf.
“We had petition training on Saturday. It was a big drive — 500 people showed up, it was amazing,” she said.

On Saturday at her petition kickoff event there were at least 500 people. Very diverse crowd.

It’s nice to run a Union, especially one that is very organized. Would be interesting to check attendance with the LM-2s.

Reports filed with the US Dept. of Labor detailing union finances and salaries. The other A-1 donor is Jackson Potter, CTU employee. He is the son of CTU’s attorney Robin Potter, also on the payroll. A lot of familiar faces in the crowd for Lewis.

Hey Bill Kelly,
Is this campaign going to be more of the usual kooky “challenge people to fist fights” thing that you are known for?
Or have you spent a few minutes “thinking” about issues?
Because if you are going to do the usual, I may sign up. I’m good at the whole Vince McMahon role that your campaign needs. Who are we going to challenge first?
But if you are going to be serious, forget it. You’ve never shown must intellectual depth, so that sort of race would be boring as heck.

Woohoo. Not that I like her or want her to win. I just like the theater and for Rahm to have a real challenge. Only feel bad for my friends who work for him - he’ll probably make their lives hell.

That’s already the case in most suburan districts.
In Orland 135s negotiations they actually had a member of the IEA (from another district) as a board member and sole negotiator for the Board.
That’s how mediocre, failing teachers get $120K for 178 days work, 5% “spikes” over their last 4 years to unjustifiably increase penions by 16%, and 93% of their family health care premiums picked up by the taxpayers.
BTW, care to guess how many of those 500 are being paid from union coffers to circulate petitions and campaign for Ms Lewis? I’m sure those SEIU “rent a demonstrator/petitioner/doorknocker” folks are well represented in that throng, as well as many looking for patronage jobs if she’s elected. You kow the ones who didn’t get enough “clout” under Rahm.

Why does the ability to put up $40k make her “phony”? She doesn’t, to my knowledge, have a problem with rich people (nor does $40k in the bank make her rich, or anything close to it, considering she and her husband aren’t too far from SS retirement age.)
The problem is (in a gross simplification) with those who don’t want public policies and programs to help others out of poverty. It happens that this type of person is often rich, showing a lack of empathy. Sheesh.

Understand that the CTU contract last time around included topics like how to handle teachers if CPS turned around their schools. The chief negotiators on the CPS side benefited financially from turning around schools because of their ties with AUSL. There will always be conflicts of interest. The best thing to protect the students as well as the taxpayers is an independent and elected Board of Education.

William Kelly has been serious many times before. There was the time he , um , um, um well ok how about , um, um well I will get back to you on that later. The pizza at lizzy Mcniels is great they serve by the slice , it shouldn’t cost the campaign more than 20 bucks to get everybody a couple slices.
Oh yah just remembered he was serious when he chased Quinnochio down the street , I knew he was serious at least once.

FWIW, the answer is that ZERO of the attendees were paid to be there, or paid to circulate. It was ALL volunteers.

I would love to Alabama. That answer is 0. Not only that, but most of those volunteers will be scraping every dime they have together to donate. If you don’t believe me, wait until one gives you a petition and ask them why they should support Karen Lewis. You may disagree with them, but you can’t doubt their passion.

Never, and neither does any other candidate without those “volunteers” expecting to be paid off in one way or another.
There’s no “grass roots” here. She’s done virtually nothing for the community, her greedy leadership of CTU has brought CPS to the brink of financial collapse, and her obsolescence with work rules has been a major cause of failure in CPS.
So far as I can see, she’s done NOTHING positive for the people of the city of Chicago, she’s just shortchanged the children and kept them woefully inadequately educated despite funding (over $13,000 per student) that most suburban unit districts would LOVE to have. Check out Indian Prairie 204 in Will County Aurora-Naperville. They provide TOP quality teachers, far more contact hours, state of the art facilities, and much higher achievement results for low income students than CPS for about $2K less per student.Of course the test scores wouldn’t be the same because of demographics,but there’s no reason, other than Sharon Lewis and her CTU, that Chicago students don’t have the quality of teachers and facilities that 204 has.
Under what conditions would somebody volunteer to circulate petitions for someone who’s done so much damage to the education of the students in the city of Chicago?
Yep, you got it. Those with their hands out for cash and patronage privilege.
Maybe she wasn’t handing out “walking around money” yet, but if 500 folks show up for a candidate like that, you KNOW it’s coming.

According to the Indian Prairie website, the students have a shorter day, less school days in the year, and make more money than CPS teachers. Thanks for the example.
