Condemned?

Posted in:

* Was the ad really that evil?…

Women deserve more respect than this, and Bruce Rauner should condemn this Republican ad: http://t.co/2ZaneMr1IX

— Quinn for Illinois (@QuinnForIL) October 2, 2014

The left-leaning media has gone nutso about the ad. People have been sending me stories all day.

For the record, I didn’t think it was very funny, believed it was pretty demeaning and maybe counter-productive, but should it be “condemned”?

  1. Mocked is the word PQ4IL was looking for.

Mark Twain did say: “Use the right word, not its second cousin” but in this case “condemned” more like the neighbor down the street who keeps the blinds pulled shut.

  2. Time to get the Fonzie from Happy Days jacket out.

Between this and the tollway ==hit==, we are in danger of jumping the shark.

  3. Maybe he is just trying to get Bruce to take the bait…. But he should know that won’t work. The guy has absolutely no shame.

Comment by Ducky LaMoore Thursday, Oct 2, 14 @ 2:40 pm

  4. Ok, I was one who didn’t like this and said so, and was vocal about it…

    “Condemn”?

How about you counter by saying “we aren’t surprised, it makes us sad, and it says more about the CRNC liking this than we probably could”

“Condemn” - c’mon you are allegedly a campaign, be above it, don’t sink to it.

  6. I would condemn it. Takes prize for most insulting ad in a season of some of the most insulting ads ever.

Comment by Living in Machiaville Thursday, Oct 2, 14 @ 2:40 pm

  7. For every teenage or twenty-something woman this ad impresses, it offends a dozen or so more. They took a chance on being cutesy and ended up insulting women as shallow and dumb.

  8. i love the first admendment

  9. First, it’s college kids for God’s sake. Of course the humor is a bit juvenile.

Second, they ought to thank Quinn for helping it get more play. Boneheaded decision on the part of the Quinnsters

Comment by Old Guy Thursday, Oct 2, 14 @ 2:43 pm

  10. For crying out loud, you don’t have to “respond” to every dopey thing that comes down the line. Keep your focus.

And “condemn?” Check the dictionary for the definition, then try again. Or better yet, let it go.

Geez, some the peeps on both crews get distracted by every shiny new thing that comes along. And the constant faux outrage over stupid little things is comical when it’s not pathetic.

Whichever team can keep best keep its focus in the final lap will probably win it.

Comment by wordslinger Thursday, Oct 2, 14 @ 2:46 pm

  11. What a bunch of pathetic old people.
These ladies dig it and they get attacked for it?
    Progressives are such total killjoys.
    No humor.
    No patience.
No idea of how ridiculous they look today.
They might have been “groovy” when they were these ladies age, but now - they have aged into what they used to mock forty years ago.

  12. Got to be the strangest ad of the season so far…Who watches this and says, “Yes, this is what young people like.”

  13. –Progressives are such total killjoys.
    No humor.
    No patience–

Rather a broad brush, don’t you think?

What’s with the word, “progressive,” any way? When and why did your team switch from “liberals” as the cuss word?

Do you know, or do you just do what your told?

Comment by wordslinger Thursday, Oct 2, 14 @ 2:51 pm

  14. Call me a progressive killjoy, but “ladies” VM. Do you really talk that way?

  15. It’s merely a cheesy parody of the reality crap that is on television today.

It’s dumb, but spare the faux outrage.

  16. Any young folks who care enough to get involved in political campaigns are admirable.

Comment by walker Thursday, Oct 2, 14 @ 2:53 pm

  17. Why not call it outrageous and leave it at that?

Asking for your opponent to condemn something when you refuse to condemn offensive actions done by your supporters seems hypocritical.

  18. Good golly will I be glad when this election season is over…

Seriously on both sides, who has the cycles or the energy in life to get outraged by a web ad or all sorts of things in life.

Guess I am getting older and perhaps the grey hair is taking away my ability to be outraged….

  19. For what it’s worth same holds true for those upset about the V card ad…

Comment by OneMan Thursday, Oct 2, 14 @ 2:57 pm

  20. Funny, this feigned outrage from Camp Quinn and the fogies on this site shows who really is out of touch the 25 and below crowd.
I showed the add to my twin nieces… 19 yr olds and they said it was funny, they completely identified with the perspectives of what the ad meant, that Quinn’s views were old and tired and that Rauners was modern and new!

how effective that ad will be with the twenty something’s who knows???, typically they are not the largest block voter demographic that shows up on election day, but hey credit to college GOP’ers a good campaign makes sure to turn over every stone.

    Comment by Fair & Balanced Thursday, Oct 2, 14 @ 3:00 pm

  21. The ad doesn’t upset me. It is more along the lines of my expectation from today’s GOP — the harder they try, the more they insult women. Nothing new.

Comment by kimocat Thursday, Oct 2, 14 @ 3:03 pm

  22. The constant response by the PQ team in areas that need no response clearly show next week may be terrible. Why respond to every move? Do they not get the Ad will now be seen?

  23. College students make a parody and it enrages the supposed liberal open minded folks.

If you don’t get it, it wasn’t meant for you and the louder you complain about it, the sillier you look.

Comment by VanillaMan Thursday, Oct 2, 14 @ 3:04 pm

  24. Does the ad really say that Illinois has the highest income tax in the nation? I’m quite sure that’s not true.

  27. The CRNC are neanderthals when it comes to women, but hold the outrage. This is the kind of stuff 20-somethings watch on their tv shows. But the geniuses behind it could better have staged the ad in a bookstore or a work lunchroom instead of the bridal gown store. Reveals their frivolous view of women.

Comment by Formerpol Thursday, Oct 2, 14 @ 3:06 pm

  28. yeah, i think the ad is pretty stupid, especially since it is used in several different states, but this little faux factoid really caught my attention: “and the highest income tax in the nation.”

this claim was so easy to fact-check that it shows how little thought was put into it:

Arkansas: 7% on income over $32,600
California: 10.55% on income over $1 million
Connecticut: 6.5% on income over $500,000
Dist of Columbia: 8.5% on income over $40,000
Delaware: 6.95% on income over $60,000
Georgia: 6% on income over $7,000
Hawaii: 11% on income over $200,000
Idaho: 7.8% on income over $26,418
Iowa: 8.98% on income over $63,315
Kansas: 6.45% on income over $30,000
Kentucky: 6% on income over $75,000
Louisiana: 6% on income over $50,000
Maine: 8.5% on income over $20,150
Maryland: 6.25% on income over $1 million
Minnesota: 7.85% on income over $74,780
Missouri: 6% on income over $9,000
Montana: 6.9% on income over $15,400
Nebraska: 6.84% on income over $27,000
New Jersey: 8.97% on income over $500,000
New York: 8.97% on income over $500,000
North Carolina: 7.75% on income over $60,000
Oregon: 11% on income over $250,000
Rhode Island: 9.9% on income over $373,650
South Carolina: 7% on income over $13,700
Vermont: 8.95% on income over $373,650
West Virginia: 6.5% on income over $60,000
Wisconsin: 7.75% on income over $225,000

but i believe this is a web ad, so it’s not like it has to be truthful…

  32. Faux outrage. Then again, Fox news jumped the shark with its similar “outrage” about Obama’s lazy coffee salute. Both sides need to chill out. It’s patently obvious to most what these over the top reactions are about - red meat to the extremists in your base. Do you need them since they’re with your team anyway? Or perhaps would it be more worthwhile to reach out to the middle?

Comment by phocion Thursday, Oct 2, 14 @ 3:15 pm

Comment by Because I say so... Thursday, Oct 2, 14 @ 3:23 pm

  34. For the love! Really Pat it’s a goofy ad that was supposed to be a funny parody of a reality show. Which was put together by some college kids. It isn’t very funny.

That being said i’m glad they are taking an interest in politics.

I suspect the interest from “left-leaning media” has more to do with finding a Todd Atkin type of gaffe to blunt a possible GOP wave. I don’t think this is it but i could be wrong.

Comment by Mason born Thursday, Oct 2, 14 @ 3:25 pm

  35. Yes it should be condemned, in the strongest possible terms. It is grossly sexist. Of course, on the one hand, you can say “what else would you expect from the College Republicans?” But that does not make it any less disgusting.

Something like this is infinitely worse than any of the negative attacks thrown out by either side. It perpetuates sexism. It is not just a joke that fell flat. It is a mean spirited and bigoted joke. Stuff like this has no place in our political discourse.

    Comment by Angel's Sword Thursday, Oct 2, 14 @ 3:26 pm

  36. Phocion

Not a R by any means but the latte salute was deeply insulting to servicemen and veterans. Granted much like this it was an oversight and not an intentional snub.

Comment by Mason born Thursday, Oct 2, 14 @ 3:27 pm

  37. It’s not funny or clever, period. Rauner is getting a lot of free publicity out of the stupidity of the production. It’s dated and poorly executed, and doesn’t deserve the attention it’s garnering.

Comment by my two cents Thursday, Oct 2, 14 @ 3:29 pm

  38. The College Republicans over at UIS are in full fledged hiding because of this, from what I’ve heard. If it was meant to target young Republicans, it sure didn’t work. There are actually talks about splitting apart from the National group over it. They might have stepped in it this time. It’s usually best not to imply your own demographic is stupid and uninformed.

Comment by Irked Thursday, Oct 2, 14 @ 3:36 pm

  39. I showed it to my wife — she hates politics but loves Say Yes to the Dress — she really liked the ad and thought it was funny.

Comment by Just Observing Thursday, Oct 2, 14 @ 3:40 pm

  40. You don’t send this out from the campaign over a picture of the governor.

Have one of your surrogates go apey about it if you think it helps.

Comment by wordslinger Thursday, Oct 2, 14 @ 3:41 pm

  41. Wow, is this attempt to connect with 4 millennial women still living at home in Winnetka? This is so sad, it’s truly not even funny. Trying on $10′,000 wedding dresses while debating politics with mom is atypical for most millennialis. In fact, note to Rauner, the north shore millennialist still hanging around your neighborhood are probably too busy doing rehab to vote.

Comment by Jimmy Thursday, Oct 2, 14 @ 3:42 pm

  42. It’s awful. My policy is to never let a sexist remark/ad go unanswered. For that matter anti semitic, homophobic or racist material.

What if the ad was racist? would we let it go if it was not some in your face overt thing but just demeaning?

Comment by Amalia Thursday, Oct 2, 14 @ 3:43 pm

  43. == believed it was pretty demeaning… should it be “condemned”? ==

Getting way down & dirty into language and semantics, aren’t we? I’d probably ‘condemn’ something ‘pretty demeaning’.

    Comment by sal-says Thursday, Oct 2, 14 @ 3:48 pm

  44. @VM “If you don’t get it, it wasn’t meant for you and the louder you complain about it, the sillier you look.”

Hmmmm. Not sure I agree with that. Let’s suppose it were a racist joke, a bigoted joke, or a joke about someone’s religion.

But since it’s just a ’sexist’ joke we should just shut up an roll with it?

Yeah…that makes sense. No reason to talk about it if you’re offended by it, simply because you don’t find it funny.

    Keep going with that.

Comment by How Ironic Thursday, Oct 2, 14 @ 3:52 pm

  45. Agree that condemn might be too strong but it does display the sexist attitudes of many conservative Republicans.

Comment by The Dude Abides Thursday, Oct 2, 14 @ 4:00 pm

  46. Condemn is too much. Call it what it is- a goofy ad that won’t appeal to many. Truthfully the people they are targeting who’s lives are based on reality shows aren’t voting anyway. Even if the Kardashians do an ad for the guy.

Comment by DuPage Bard Thursday, Oct 2, 14 @ 4:32 pm

  47. == the highest income tax in the nation ==

That’s a whopper for sure. Tell it to the residents of California, Minnesota, and New Jersey, where the top rate is more than double ours.

Comment by Anon Thursday, Oct 2, 14 @ 4:56 pm

  48. I think it is sophomoric (probably due to the fact it was made by students). I’m not a fan of “Say Yes to the Dress,” but maybe it is a big hit in female college dorms.

If it is sexist then young Republican women are waging war on their own gender as the ad was created by women.

Per Politico: “CRNC President Alex Smith — the first woman ever elected to that position — said the ads were written and produced in-house by her and the committee’s four other female staffers. (She noted the CRNC’s staff is majority female.)”

Comment by Big Red Rightwinger Thursday, Oct 2, 14 @ 5:10 pm

  49. They actually used the same add for Rick Scott’s campaign in Florida - just changed the name for Rauner, I guess. Thought the ad itself was pretty lame, but appreciate the frugality in recylcing it.

Comment by bindyesq Thursday, Oct 2, 14 @ 5:16 pm

  50. Have Republicans completely ignored the polling?

Someone help me out here, but why in the world would Republicans want ANYONE under 30 to be voting?

If you are a Republican, you don’t want young voters thinking about voting, planning on voting, tweeting about voting.

You don’t want them to know there is an election.

Comment by Yellow Dog Democrat Thursday, Oct 2, 14 @ 6:14 pm

  51. Big Red, Ann Coulter is a GOP woman, but that doesn’t keep her from being a misogynist. It’s that kind of simplistic generalizations that keep the GOP (including women) in the dark ages.

Comment by my two cents Thursday, Oct 2, 14 @ 7:09 pm

  52. What were they thinking when they decided to play that cheesy recycled junk? That won’t fly in this state and especially in Chicago. Dumb move.

Comment by Ginhouse Tommy Thursday, Oct 2, 14 @ 7:53 pm

  53. Totally out of touch.
Probably the idea of a 60
    year old man. Insulting to
    anyone’s intelligence.

Comment by Vince glothor Thursday, Oct 2, 14 @ 8:06 pm

  54. Since Rauner is trying to downplay his personal wealth so voters can more easily identify with him, I probably would have skipped popping the cork on the champagne bottle at the end of the political ad. It smacks of “elitism” and “privilege”. That isn’t the brand that Bruce should want to be mentally associated with his name. Other than that small change, it was an “okay” political ad that I shouldn’t think would upset that many people. Maybe the future bride should have been trying on Carharrt jackets instead of wedding gowns?

Comment by Coffee Cup Friday, Oct 3, 14 @ 7:24 am

  55. “Condemn” is probably a bit over the top, but it’s in Quinn’s best interest to keep this ad in the press for another day.

Comment by colby Friday, Oct 3, 14 @ 8:18 am

  56. I didn’t think it was funny; I thought it was stupid and demeaning to women. But I also think that most of the reality TV shows are stupid and demeaning to women (Real Housewives, anyone?), and I don’t watch any of it. But since so many of these shows are wildly successful and have been on for years, there are obviously a lot of people out there who DO watch them and don’t find them offensive. I’m guessing those people wouldn’t find this any more offensive or demeaning than the shows they’re already watching.

Just a hunch here, but I would bet that most of you who find this ad sexist and insulting probably aren’t regular watchers of “reality” TV. Don’t discount the mindset of those are when analyzing whether voters would find this ad insulting.

    Comment by ??? Friday, Oct 3, 14 @ 9:56 am
