Money still coming in for referenda

Posted in:

* More money is flowing into political committees designed to push statewide ballot initiatives. For instance the Committee to Reduce Income Inequality & to Support Human Rights has gone from raising $757,500 since the end of last month to a bit over a million dollars today. The Operating Engineers, Amalgamated Transit Union and the Great Lake Region Organizing Committee have all pitched in since we last checked that committee.

* The Committee to Raise Illinois’s Minimum Wage had raised $603K by the end of September. It’s up to $962K today. SEIU Healthcare, the NEA, Leo Smith and others all contributed.

* And as subscribers already know, Dr. Henry Nicholas III contributed $850,000 to the Marsy’s Law for IL Committee on October 1st.

  1. I’m truly baffled - do people think the raise the minimum wage referendum has a chance of losing? Is it just too big of a risk to take? Is there some sort of slushiness to that committee where it allows for de facto pro-Dem candidate spending that otherwise couldn’t happen?

  2. ===I’m truly baffled ===

    Then you haven’t been keeping up.

    They find minimum wage supporters who are soft supporters, to zeroes to minuses on Quinn and then use that issue to shore up the governor. They also use that issue to register folks to vote and/or then get the plusses to pledge to vote.

  3. It’s real good to see financial support for popular issues/ideas like a minimum wage increase and the millionaire surcharge. We will soon see if the money is well spent.

    I credit MJM for getting more life out of policies that couldn’t pass during this spring’s legislative sessions. If these initiatives help bring voters out for Quinn, and he wins, that will have been brilliant on the part of MJM.

  6. that referendum about victims is getting lots of paid media in the Chicago market.

    wonder how much it will cost to perform all those activities that would result from a successful vote?

  7. Money is one thing. But it will be impressive if they pull this off operationally. Will take some very smart organization, systems, and lots of bodies.
