One of the best editorials in memory

* You won’t see many tweets like this from an Illinois Federation of Teachers spokesperson, but I couldn’t agree with her more…

*@Trib_Ed_Board often ticks me off.But tonight, they choked me up.You're a mensch @BruceDold. Get well @KarenLewisCTU http://t.co/8MQzsObuhR

Like the Trib, I’m not exactly a huge Karen Lewis fan, but like Aviva, I choked up a little reading the editorial. I really wish they would write stuff like this more often. Go read the whole thing.

  1. It was a touching gesture. Hopefully it will spur Lewis to start using more of such magnanimity towards her adversaries when she recovers.

Comment by Shore Friday, Oct 10, 14 @ 10:41 am

  2. I saw that last night and admire Lewis enough to have read it.

Regarding the “tussle”, the Tribune editorial board is awfully confident about its own longevity.

  3. Agree or disagree with her, the discussion is more interesting when she is in it.

  4. You just can’t help yourself, can you, @shore?

  5. Not a Karen fan at all. But, at the same time I’m praying for good results and a full recovery. Decency is something everyone can learn from. Nice editorial.

  6. IEA sent out a tweet last night wishing Karen a speedy recovery. Love her or hate her, you have to respect her passion.

  7. I can’t get past the Trib paywall. Can you post some highlights?

Also- that’s a low blow, Shore. Really.

  8. I totally support Karen Lewis, but I’m also lucky enough to call her friend. I very much appreciate opponents who can look past political differences and realize that this is a person. She is an incredibly warm and caring person for those who have gotten to know her beyond the media and sound bites. I’ve also seen her interact with her “enemies” up close and personal and I can assure you that she has been warm and caring with them too. She actually gets along very with with Barbara Byrd Bennett who I can’t tolerate at all and she got along fine with her predecessor. I am very appreciative of those who might not be fans, but realize that there is a person there and not just a political figure.

  9. Certainly don’t know her other than her persona in media coverage but I hope she gets past her health issues. Nothing else matters if you don’t have your health.

  10. We are all human, and the better we remember that the more likely we are to actually move Illinois forward.

While we heap well-deserved praise on the Tribune editorial board, Lewis and Aviva Gibbs, I am going to try to reserve as much time as possible this weekend to reflect on how I can do a better job.

Potshots from both sides at the Tribune editorial board and union leaders are unfortunately too common these days.

So, let’s savor the moment and realize that although we may have dramatically different world views, we should start out with the assumption that we are all advocating in good faith for what we believe to be the best interests for Illinois, now and in the future.

  11. I’m no Tribune fan, but that editorial was very touching, I’m sure, to Karen Lewis. It reminds us that everyone in the public eye is so much more than the image of them seen through the lens of the media.

I, too, wish Karen Lewis the best as she works through her health issue. And thank her for her devoted public service, which service, no doubt, could be a factor in her health situation.

Comment by Concerned Friday, Oct 10, 14 @ 11:30 am

  12. Great editorial. Well written, thoughtful, heartfelt, love it and shows how wonderful the Trib Ed Board can be… and then they follow it with a total garbage endorsement for Rauner that isn’t logical and contradicts itself every other paragraph. No one does Great to Horrible better than them I guess.

  13. It’s a terrific Editorial.

  14. My Mom a recently retired teacher of over 35 years, and her collieges were hoping for a Karen Lewis mayoral run and win. Teachers have not been a fan of Rahm’s, which is no secret.

Comment by 3rd Generation Chicago Native Friday, Oct 10, 14 @ 11:55 am

  15. Yellow Dog Democrat: If all of us chisel your final paragraph onto a corner of our screens, Illinois will be a healthier state. Thanks for the grown-up perspective.

Comment by Fight Fair Friday, Oct 10, 14 @ 11:56 am

  16. Paywall!

To get through it, if u have an iPhone, as soon as the story pops up, hit Reader View. It stops the paywall from coming up.

Comment by Nonplussed Friday, Oct 10, 14 @ 12:14 pm

  17. Copy the URL for the story into Google…the link in the results will bypass the paywall.

Comment by Stu Friday, Oct 10, 14 @ 1:36 pm

  18. It is right to feel concern and compassion when a worthy adversary is down. Karen Lewis, love her or not, is a strong advocate for her constituency and a worthy adversary.

Comment by JS Mill Friday, Oct 10, 14 @ 2:40 pm

  19. Karen Lewis is pure Chicago. Lots of moxy, in your face, never back down, self-confident.

I am not a fan. However, anybody who can stare RE down can’t be all bad. Wish her well and a speedy recovery.
