Rate Bruce Rauner’s new TV ad

* Bruce Rauner has switched tracks again and is now blasting Gov. Pat Quinn for his declaration to the Daily Herald editorial board that he would push to make the income tax hike permanent during the fall veto session. From a Monday press release…

Bruce Rauner today launched a new TV ad educating voters that Gov. Pat Quinn plans to push through a massive income tax increase right after the November election.

The 30-second spot, titled “Gonna Happen,” uses Quinn’s own words before the Daily Herald editorial board where he admitted he was secretly planning to push through a permanent income tax hike during the lame duck session of the General Assembly.

“Voters need to know that Pat Quinn is planning a massive tax hike right after the election,” Rauner spokesperson Mike Schrimpf said. “Illinois families have been suffering under Pat Quinn’s 67% income tax hike for the last four years. Now Quinn wants to hit them with another tax increase right after the election. Illinois families cannot afford four more years of Pat Quinn.”

Last month, the Daily Herald reported that Pat Quinn “said he wants a vote on the income tax in the weeks after Election Day, before the next governor and new set of lawmakers are sworn in.” The Daily Herald also noted “that’s how the 2011 income tax hike was approved, hours before the new legislature was set to be sworn in and with the help of several Democratic lawmakers who had lost the November election and had promised not to raise taxes.”

  1. Excellent ad. It raises fear. People aren’t going to vote for Bruce Rauner, but they will vote against Pat Quinn and the fear of another tax increase.

  2. “B+, B”

    “Why?”

This idea that Quinn’s own words aren’t strong enough. The pictures of MJM, Cullerton, and Blago, surrounding Quinn reminds me that Rauner’s Crew thinks tying all four is a winner, but a “Governor Rauner” is going to find these Ads a huge loser come governing time.

Further, if you have to put all 4 as a rider to the damaging quote, that isn’t clearly making a hit, that’s window-dressing a quote that doesn’t need it.

    Lack of focus.

That’s where the Rauner Crew fails to get the easy “A” with a dreadfully hurtful quote.

  3. Might be his best so far. If I am Rauner I play it over and over.

  4. Sounds like more of the same commercials we are seeing in every other race. I don’t think it will stand out against all the other ones. I give it a “meh”.

  5. Agree Willy get rid of the other three. Then add the line before you spend that money on Chirstmas gifts listen to what Pat Quinn said.
    It’s still a solid B maybe even A.

  6. It’s fine, if old news. It’s not a secret that Quinn is in favor of extending the tax, How does it flip undecideds?

Comment by Wordslinger Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 9:58 am

  7. The ad doesn’t speak to extending the current “temporary” income tax hike or making it permanent. It states that Quinn is seeking an additional income tax increase over and above the one enacted in 2010.

Comment by Under Further Review Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 10:01 am

  8. “It’s gonna happen…” Bears making the playoffs? Sosa entering the HOF?

This reminds me of the “you didn’t build that!” brouhaha, where the words had punch, but in the context of a paragraph, didn’t.

Comment by Jocko Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 10:01 am

  9. Not that Bruce Rauner is the most photogenic dude, but I *love* the picture of a smirking, head tilting Governor Quinn.

  10. Pretty good, assuming that the tax increase, which we are paying right now, is a major issue for likely voters. It could be, since many middle class voters probably feel economically stretched. On the other hand, it won’t change our paychecks going forward. How many folks are seriously budgeting for the increase to go away. Not many I bet.

What’s more important is what if it’s not enough. What will our two candidates propose. That’s pretty fuzzy on both sides. And the results could affect the size of our paychecks. That’s what the media should be asking the candidates in these various debates…and don’t let them put you off.

  11. Even though Rauner plans to do the same thing this January, to start a four year phasing out.

Comment by walker Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 10:11 am

  12. Is the name of the paper really Chicago Daily Herald? If so, when did that happen?

Comment by And I Approved This Message Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 10:11 am

  13. I saw it during the weekend. It’s “meh.” Rauner has been attacking Quinn all along about the income tax increase, and it’s Rauner who has been slipping in the polls. Two polls came out recently, showing Quinn up by a few–on top of other polls showing Quinn leading by a few.

I saw another TV ad that said Rauner won’t take a salary or pension as governor. Pretty.Darn.Insulting. To state workers who rely on their pay checks and who would be at the negotiating table with Rauner’s administration.

    I rate the ad a C-.

  14. A- even though it is deliberately misleading. What’s new?

Comment by walker Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 10:14 am

  15. Didnt Bruce say he was going to raise taxes? Oh and to the idea he’s not going to take a salary. Who really freakin’ cares.

Comment by Del Clinkton Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 10:14 am

  16. Yawn. Where’s the part about PQ threatening women and creating unsafe conditions for the elderly?

Oh wait, that’s the other guy.

  17. Good ad. “Quinncom tax”

Comment by Tequila Mockingbird Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 10:29 am

  18. i was liking it until it hit me that Rauner wants to impose a new sales tax on services, which could end up being more.

  19. Hey credit the ReBooters….they expouse Mitt flip flop on tax hikes….that will really frost Mitt and Mr. Shrimp

Comment by CircularFiringSquad Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 10:45 am

  20. I give this ad a solid B+. Rauner has a small edge in the “Who’s more trustworthy?” question, according to a poll from Reboot Illinois. Making Quinn look shifty isn’t a bad idea.

Comment by Lunchbox Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 10:45 am

  21. Quinn wants to raise taxes. Rauner wants to raise taxes. Quinn is clear about the tax he wants to raise. Rauner gabbles about this and that, raising income taxes in order to lower them, adding service taxes, a rather (typical) confusing mishmash.

The partisan voter won’t care, the uneducated voter will see them both as talking tax raises, and the educated non-1% voter should prefer Quinn’s tax proposal.

  22. –It’s fine, if old news. It’s not a secret that Quinn is in favor of extending the tax, How does it flip undecideds?–

    Precisely.

  23. One of the few Rauner ads I’ve really thought that had some punch to it. Like others, I would leave MJM and JC out of it.

    Solid B.

Comment by Arthur Andersen Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 12:13 pm

  24. For most voters the ad will have the desired effect. I would give it a solid B grade.

However, it has problems that many voters will probably not see. First, the tax increase Quinn is looking for after the election is old news. Second, I cannot see it being passed in Nov. or Dec. The lame duck session in Jan. is the probable time if Quinn is re-elected. Finally, the 100 years part along with the photos of MJM, Cullerton, and Blago seems a bit out of place to me given that the main message is about taxes.

  25. You make more money, you pay more in taxes.

    ‘Nuff said.

Comment by Del Clinkton Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 12:56 pm

  26. Can somebody tell me how it’s a “secret” if he’s said it? Somebody needs to tell the Rauner people what the word secret actually means.

As for the ad, it’s ok. Not really anything different than we’ve heard before, though. Rauner needs something new if he’s going to move number IMO.

  27. It’s a good ad–possibly one of his best. I’d give it a B or B+.Taxes generally go up-rarely go down.

In general, ads on taxes are dull since it’s also the same old-same old.

Comment by Belle Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 1:13 pm

  28. This one will sting. It’s a strong pass. Not too many people can pick Cullerton out of a crowd, but they sure know who Madigan is; and he’s hemorrhaging in public opinion. That one’s had 4 years to percolate now and it’s sticking. It’s a strong ad using Quinn against himself.

    Comment by A guy... Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 1:15 pm

  29. I think most voters are either pleased with or indifferent about John Cullerton. Not sure why he is lumped in with Madigan, Blago and Quinn as the Four Horsemen of the Financial Apocalypse.

    Love the Quinn photo. B.

  30. B-

Bruce needs to stand up and defend himself as a person. Voters vote for people. Not for policies.
