* Some commenters mentioned a new Bruce Rauner radio ad, so I asked the campaign for a copy. Here’s “Throw Me Out”..
* Script…
NARRATOR: What is Pat Quinn promising Illinois the day after the election? Another massive tax hike, this year. Here’s what Quinn said when the media asked him about his plan to raise income taxes on every Illinois family.
QUINN: It’s gonna happen in 2014, in November and December.
NARRATOR: Pat Quinn broke his promise and raised taxes before. This time he’s not even bothering to lie about it.
QUINN: It’s gonna happen in 2014, in November and December.
NARRATOR: Quinn’s tax hike would raise income taxes on every working man and women in Illinois. Every single one.
QUINN: It’s gonna happen in 2014, in November and December.
NARRATOR: After 100 years of failure, Pat Quinn wants four more years? And even more tax hikes this year.
RAUNER: Here’s the deal. Give me a shot to deliver more jobs and lower taxes, and if we don’t get it done, throw me out in four years.
NARRATOR 2: Bruce Rauner, shake up Springfield, bring back Illinois. Paid for by Citizens for Rauner, Inc.
…Adding… My own thought is that if you’re upset about the income tax hike, you’re not voting for Quinn anyway. I’m not sure how many new voters this brings to the fold, but, hey, I could be wrong. Your own take?

Decent ad. Except nobody’s taxes are being raised. They would just stay the same.

Pat Quinn never made any such promise, but the ad IS right about one thing–he’s not lying about it–Bruce Rauner is the one lying–right in this ad.
Of course, Rauner lies SO often, it’s hardly news.

I thought the ad had some irony to it. Rauner is criticizing Quinn for his honesty. Whether or not removing the sunset clause constitutes a tax increase is a matter of conjecture. I do agree with your conclusion that the ad really doesn’t bring new votes to the table.

I wish that the Quinnsters could run an add against Mr business called ‘Burn Rate’. Think of all the good that money could accomplish- instead of lining the pockets of Republican hacks- who are glad to take Rauner’s cash.

Do we even know the context of that clip from Quinn? It’s pretty generic. He could be referring to the Christmas season for all we know. Just sayin’

Agree. But perhaps the buy is on radio stations or shows with more republican voters so it is designed to get the base out?

Why not an “A”?
For the purpose of the Ad, it’s true, while Rauner himself also wants to raise the tax back, not let it expire, and wants a gradual roll back.
Gets a 1/2 grade knockdown for that.

The Pat Quinn cut just does not work. They can take that piece and splice it into any ad, good or bad. Heck Quinn could be talking about the Polar Vortex for all I know.

Don’t see how it flips undecideds.
It’s another theme - like Blago, Harold Washington, Madigan - that was used four years ago.
Also, in this context, the “100 years” makes no sense.

In September, Quinn was asked at a meeting with the Daily Herald editorial board if he’d be able to win approval for his tax plan in 2015.
“It’s going to happen in 2014, in November and December,” Quinn replied.

In 2010, Quinn campaigned in favor of an income tax hike. How is that breaking his promise?

That’s not much of a promise, is it? He’s basically just saying that he’ll serve his term, and if he breaks his promise, he’ll run for re-election and people can vote against him.
Just like what would happen if he never made the statement.

As an Ad to reinforce Rauner’s narrative, it is the Gentleman’s “C”, it’s the quote that has punch.
Good catch by - Wordslinger -, as I answer in the vacuum, the “100 years” on its own in the context fails…in the vacuum it makes sense. Good catch.

I’m far from impartial, but that 100 years of Pat Quinn gimmick does more harm than good.
Some listeners will think, “Quinn’s not 100 years old — What the heck are they talking about?” Others will wonder if the out of context quote is as suspicious as the 100 years claim. In either case, the goofy math distracts and detracts from the message.
And anyone who thinks the 100 years assertion is legit is already deep in the bag for Bruce.

Of course Quinn is spending- 21 day from the election. Rauner’s spent all summer like a sailor on shore leave. Amateurish
and fiscally responsible.

Like to see a Quinn ad describing what would have happened without the tax increase. Pretty easy to do, since we have Quinn’s doomsday budget(s) as a guideline. Laid off employees, less school funding, State sinking further into debt, even worse bond rating downgrades, etc. After describing all the cuts that would have happened, it could close with something like “that’s what would have happened without the tax increase” or “that’s what Rauner wants for the State”
Actually, what we voters deserve and apparently won’t see this election cycle is an honest discussion about what services the State should be providing, the amount of revenue needed to support those services, and the best method(s) of raising said revenue.

That ad would be far more effective if Rauner would tell us his plan for tax rates for next year or the following.
All Rauner tells us is that in year four, they will be 3%.
If Rauner wants to make it an issue, he really should tell us his plan.

Dovetails with the Sun Times Editorial today about the economy. It will help. Very hard to suggest how much help at this point. It’s a strong ad.

Agree with RNUG. Quinn should be specific about what the reduction in state tax revenue would mean in cuts to programs. Maybe we will get that in the next weeks. People like to hear exactly what would be lost, and that message would be welcome.

Heard this on the ride in this morning (WBBM). Sounded to me like one of those bad mashups of single words used to make someone sound like they said something they didn’t. And, agree on the “100 years” out of context. I give it a D.

I’ve heard this the last couple of days. Rauner himself doesn’t sound too strong in the ad.
“Give me a shot”? … “Throw me out if we fail”? Pretty much confirms voters’ concerns that he has no plan.

“100 years” makes no sense. I join the agreement. Struck me as sounding like a playground taunt. “You will too!” “Not in a 100 years!”

I’m waiting for the Quinn campaign to run an attack ad along the theme that Rauner plans to “pull a Jim Thompson”. Rauner already has problems with the GOP’s social conservatives - if he can’t seal the deal with fiscal conservatives, then he’s toast. The Libertarian Grimm could reach 10%, like Green candidate Whitney did in 2006.
I’m going out on a limb with this prediction:
Quinn 48%
Rauner 42%
Grimm 10%

Because it is deliberately misleading, it will work.
Everyone I have talked to who has heard this ad, (all of four of my suburban neighbors LOL) told me that Quinn would raise income taxes higher than they are today. They are all former Democratic voters, at least some of the time.
Others around me have reminded me that our property taxes would be frozen by Rauner.
Hardly representative samples. But it seems such simple lies do work with independent voters, when their money is clearly involved.

Gov Quinn did say once upon a time that the tax hike was “temporary.” And anybody who follows Illinois’ fiscal situation knew that was hokum.
But I think a lot of folks may find that relevant in the final hours.

This ad is full of incorrect information. Governor Quinn has proposed extending the current income tax not raising it. The current 5% tax will be temporary if a more fair graduated or progressive tax can be passed. Quinn did not promise that he would not raise taxes in 2010 or 2014. That is just made up like the rest of this ad.

I just moved to Chicago, not in time to register to vote here. I consider myself an independent voter, though I do lean left. Here’s my opinion of this ad, which I hear quite often while driving in my car: it makes no sense to me. “After 100 years of failure…” Pat Quinn has been governor for 100 years? I assume that maybe the Democrats have been in control of the state for 100 years, but I have no real idea. “November or December…” Again, that means nothing to me, largely because it’s such a small quote that it almost has to be taken out of context. Just my thoughts…
