  1. Take the poll and then explain your answer in comments, please.

“I voted ‘Draw’ because I don’t think my candidate won.”

    – MrJM

    Comment by MrJM (@MisterJayEm) Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 2:09 pm

  2. Rauner won the first 50 minutes, draw the last 10, so Rauner won the night…

The deposition might win the ongoing story…

    Voted “Rauner”

Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 2:11 pm

  3. Neither candidate did anything last night to indicate they are capable of realistically addressing the problems facing Illinois.

Comment by Anonymous Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 2:12 pm

  4. Rauner bested Quinn last night. Cheers to his debate prep for having him look more at ease and prepared.

Comment by Lunchbox Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 2:15 pm

  5. I guess Rauner? By not being Quinn he already started ahead. Honestly though how much of the black community doesn’t like Quinn, that’s the question I’m more interested in.

Comment by anon Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 2:16 pm

  6. Rauner was more aggressive.

Comment by Pete Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 2:16 pm

  7. I would have voted for a draw since both seemed to be playing it safe. However, PQ’s question about the charge of intimidation of the female CEO, and his subsequent challenge that Rauner release the deposition moves this one into the W column for the governor. I just hope that reporters hound Rauner for this information, and dont allow him to gloss over it with his traditional non answers.

Comment by anon Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 2:16 pm

  8. I voted “Draw” because who cares?

    Comment by Try-4-Truth Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 2:16 pm

  9. I voted draw because Governor Milquetoast did “fine”. I don’t think MR. Money Bags did so hot either.

Comment by lil enchilada Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 2:17 pm

  10. Didn’t see it.

Comment by Wordslinger Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 2:19 pm

  11. I voted draw. Rauner may have left us with the memorable response to Quinn’s question, re: the deposition, but that doesn’t mean he won. He also refused to talk about it afterwards and acted like a child towards reporters. The ongoing story is still about his temperament and why he thinks bullying, intimidation, and threats is an effective way to get buy in from people and accomplish things.

Comment by Precinct Captain Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 2:20 pm

  12. If it was a boxing match, I’d say the first 10 rounds were close. Rauner slowly picked him apart, but the TKO came late. The KO punch was Rauner’s question on taxes.

Comment by Phil King Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 2:20 pm

  13. ==- Wordslinger - Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 2:19 pm:==

    Then you’re the real winner.

Comment by Precinct Captain Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 2:20 pm

  14. Where Quinn lost?

    Touting stopping legislators pay…

Thinking the Pension Bill passes Constitutionality.

Can’t tell those “truths” and win the night.

They both were equally evasive and equally critical, Rauner was more pointed.

    So I voted accordingly.

Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 2:21 pm

  15. Quinn won.

If you can’t give a straight answer on the Southside to assault weapons ban, nothing else matters.

Comment by Yellow Dog Democrat Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 2:23 pm

  16. 14 comments, almost 300 votes (most for Brucie). Can’t his shills read English?

(fyi, didn’t watch so didn’t vote)

Comment by corvax Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 2:27 pm

  17. I voted draw based on optics and sound bites alone. I will say the format was better than the LWV event in Peoria. But, this is the land of Lincoln/Douglas. Why can’t we give each time to layout their case and leave some time for them to battle it out?

Comment by Casual observer Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 2:28 pm

  18. Huh. I voted less than an hour ago and the count was 40/40/20 at that point.

All the new voters must’ve stayed up late celebrating Rauner’s win!

Comment by crazybleedingheart Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 2:29 pm

  19. I voted “draw” because each candidate had stronger moments. Quinn continues to exploit the rich, meany, outsourcer theme. Rauner was much stronger this week in attacking Quins’s “record” more directly. This is the dirtiest Illinois governor’s campaign I have witnessed since I voted for Dan Walker.

Comment by Diogenes in DuPage Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 2:35 pm

  20. Rauner. Although I hate these body language experts, Quinn did look like a beaten dog. That inability to make eye contact is killing him. Rauner beat him the the “Your the worst governor in America”, and Quinn lowered his eyes and slouched his shoulders.

Too bad Brooke Anderson couldn’t pass him a note to stand up straight.

Comment by Western Ave. Doug Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 2:37 pm

  21. Rauner did better than expected and stuck to his litany on Quinn being the worst Governor. but Quinn had some totally memorable zingers that resonated with the crowd and the press and the zingers crystallize the problems that Rauner has.

Comment by Amalia Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 2:41 pm

  22. I voted Rauner. Voted for him the last time
too and this time he was even better. Looking forward to #3

Comment by Nony Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 2:43 pm

  23. Rauner won. Rauner was confident and Quinn’s voice was shaky and scared. I also enjoyed watching Rauner play offense/defense while Quinn only played defense in the debate with throwing out lies about Rauner.

Comment by IL Taxpayer Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 2:45 pm

  24. Rauner won in my opinion…

Quinn not being able to look at his opponent is very “used car salesman like”

Comment by THEGUN Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 2:48 pm

  25. People most remember how you close in a debate… and there is no doubt Rauner closed much stronger.

Comment by mail guy Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 2:52 pm

  26. Rauner - but fortunately for Quinn relatively few people watched or read about it. It is sad to say but commercials seem to have more impact in decision making for most of the electorate and I would say, on that front, Quinn is finally winning.

Comment by Kerfuffle Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 2:53 pm

  27. Rauner was crisp and on offense more often.

Comment by NW Illinois Dem Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 2:56 pm

  28. Based on slopover into next day press and TV, Rauner.

When the bits are mostly on tax increases, Quinn loses.

Comment by walker Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 2:58 pm

  29. Mitt took it on the chin..media has figured out his more shallow than our zero depth think tank at IPI …. he is denying sworn depositions that can be unsealed in a blink of the eye.
    We voted PQ
    Fire, Aim Ready!

Comment by CircularFiringSquad Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 3:01 pm

  30. Heard it on WVON Radio. Winner: Rauner. I almost drove into a post when Rauner responded forcefully to Quinn’s question about his TV ad. Couldn’t tell if a few audible gasps at different times of the debate that came from the audience when Quinn spoke were for or against Quinn, perhaps it came out differently on television.

    Comment by Louis G Atsaves Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 3:06 pm

  31. Quinn easy winner. 1) Rauner still not able to point to any success except making money for himself. 2) His totally bogus budget plan- cut taxes, aid education and leave pensions for retirees untouched (even Stevie Wonder could see that doesn’t add up) and 3) His suggestion, check the video, that the answer to assault weapons isn’t banning them, but is the creation of jobs.
    This guy really is clueless.

Comment by truthteller Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 3:07 pm

  32. I was at the debate. Quinn fidgeted the entire time and absolutely refused to look at Rauner (Quinn looked like he had to go pee). The last sequence sealed it for me. A frivolous lawsuit vs. a question that was never answered.

That was the most important question Quinn can come up with? Really?

That exchange verifies to me that Quinn is focused more on Rauner than on what is good for the people of Illinois.

The single topic that got the most out of the crowd was the minimum wage issue. Quinn avoided that to ask about a lawsuit that was tossed out at discovery? A buffoon.

Comment by CUS Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 3:08 pm

  33. Voted draw because throughout the debate neither really struck me as scoring any big hits on the other one, especially considering the audience. I’ll add that I think the questioners could have done a much better job; they swung and missed more than the candidates did.

    Comment by OldSmoky2 Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 3:13 pm

  34. Brucie lost by appearing to win and his last answer is going to kill him in the end because it gets more noses that Mitch McConnell has chins!

    Comment by D.P.Gumby Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 3:18 pm

  35. Rauner - But doesn’t matter. No one was watching. Of the few that did, I bet most already knew who they voting for.

This isnt POTUS - no one cares…

Comment by Moderate Repub Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 3:35 pm

  36. Didn’t see the debate….Rauner in a Landslide!

    Comment by I B Strapped Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 3:40 pm

  37. Loved Rauner’s close, you are full of baloney and worst governor

Comment by Anonymous Retiree Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 3:40 pm

  38. I thought they both did better. I was disappointed by Rauner’s last question, because knows the taxes will have to be raised and has said so himself.

All facets of the lawsuit were not dismissed at discovery. The case was later settled for $500,000. Rauner simply did not address the issue. I voted Quinn.

Did it bother anyone that Rauner kept smiling and shaking his head while Quinn spoke? It was very annoying to me. Each had a time to talk. Rauner’s attempts to communicate when it was not his turn made me question how he will follow the rules in general as governor.

Comment by DuPage Grandma Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 3:49 pm

  39. 54% as of now. Must have been Rauner’s detailed plan to cut taxes while expanding education, et. that swung the vote, eh?

    Comment by sal-says Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 3:53 pm

  40. sal, campaigns have been freeping my polls for years. Not much I can do about it.

Comment by Rich Miller Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 3:54 pm

  41. Draw. they are bot so dull that only 3% of the state was interested enough to watch.

Comment by Belle Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 3:55 pm

  42. Draw. Rauner won the debate and the immediate reaction; Quinn won more and better sound bites for use up to Election Day.

    Comment by PolPal56 Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 3:59 pm

  43. Rauner showed confidence, while Quinn looked like a mope. As far as format goes, I really would prefer an hour of the candidates asking each other questions. The last few minutes was the most enjoyable last night.

Comment by Jerry Hubbard Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 4:15 pm

  44. ===I really would prefer an hour of the candidates asking each other questions===

I’d love to see that. No moderator, no nothing.

Comment by Rich Miller Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 4:20 pm

Did you feel the same way when Joe Biden audibly laughed OVER and OVER at Paul Ryan during their debate in 2012?

If I was standing next to Pat Quinn and listening to his warped view of Illinois…I’d be making faces too.

Comment by Jerry Hubbard Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 4:22 pm

  46. Rauner won…his answer to Quinn’s question about the woman who accused him..brilliant…should have a commercial with those 4 points…Quinn looked puckered and red. His question to Quinn…score match to Rauner!

Comment by Anon Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 4:57 pm

  47. None of these things are real “debates” and it would have been too painful to watch those two even if it was a real debate. Voted Draw just so I could see the totals. From the proportion of votes to comments looks like a lot ghost voters out there.

Comment by West Side the Best Side Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 5:24 pm

  48. Rauner won. Seemed like both were prepped to avoid handing out a juicy sound bite to be used out of context. I handed it to Rauner because he seemed to have developed more savvy, which indicates he can learn and adapt. I don’t believe a word out of their mouths while campaigning. And the final, dumb inquiry by Gov Quinn re the female executive took Rauner over the top. Quinn tried to cross examine but lacked the evidence to nail Rauner. Bad move.

Comment by Cook County Commoner Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 5:50 pm

  49. Rauner won just needs to pound the four letter word “JOBS” and quinns failure to produce, and those of you that want to point road construction ??? how many work per mile vs. cost ??

Comment by railrat Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 5:57 pm

  50. I voted Quinn, not because he overwhelmed Rauner but because Bruce was still being secretive and coy about his past business dealings and his “plan” to turn Illinois around.

Comment by illini Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 6:41 pm

  51. winner: the 99.5% of the population that did not see it.

Comment by zatoichi Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 7:04 pm

  52. Rauner. His attacks were sharper and packed more punch.

They have the added benefit of being very relatable. Many people in Illinois can relate through experience the failures of our state that he was pointing out.

Comment by Formerly Known As... Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 7:29 pm

  53. Pretty much a Draw from what I saw, but PQ gets the nod by a Whisker because of BR’s Flap on an Assault Weapons Ban–not a very shrewd move by the Baron at this stage, whereas the Guv on the Tax issue is really moot–of COURSE he backs a Permanent extension; the State HAS to HAVE the Dough, anyone responsible who lives here KNOWS it, and for land’s sake we’re all used to paying it now and have been for Years…! Now that $500 Property Tax Rebate for Homeowners notion of Quinn’s that was put on hold this past Spring– now there’s a FAR less expensive–and doable–gift back to Illinoisans that won’t knock us off the Deep Edge into the Bottomless Pit of Fiscal IRResponsibility like where RAUner’s ludicrous tax concepts would lead us–and, hopefully, there’ll be more debate about THAT idea next Year if PQ is re-elected…!

Comment by Just the Way It Is One Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 8:29 pm

  54. if you were looking for a direct answer to a question, then Quinn. Rauner ignores the fact that out of his 300 or so companies, he could not name ONE who was AA on a Board, or top C Level suite…NOT ONE. He named Lula Ford - Rev. Meeks - Cory Brooks. NOT one Business person since that is his “wheel house” is simply disturbing.
