* I was hearing from some folks last week that a detectable backlash was growing on the South Side against African-American pastors who are supporting Republican Bruce Rauner for governor. But some idiot or idiots got way out of hand, threatening Rev. Corey Brooks…
“The death threats seem to be related to Bruce Rauner,” Brooks said at the church Saturday. “They say his name as well as mine and most of the references were in response to me in support of him. So it’s really derogatory, real racial, a lot of homophobic words. It’s real life threatening.”
Brooks said he received the five phone calls on Friday. He recorded one of them, and provided it to police. In that call, which was played for the Sun-Times, a man’s voice is disguised via a high-pitched filter. He is heard calling Brooks a “token n—–.”
“We on you boy, we on you. And you ain’t got nobody that can stop us, nobody. Who you go [to] the deacons? They can’t stop us. We going to beat your fat a– in front of your mama congregation Sunday. Yeah we going to steal the sheep of the hypocrite. You’s a hypocrite we going to beat your fat a– in front of your own congregation. Who you got that…f— we going to beat their a– too. They can’t protect you. You sell out you Uncle Tom a– n—–. You token. You a puppet for Bruce Rauner you puppet n—– a–. P—- a– n—–,” the voice says on the recording.
Brooks said he believes his family is in danger, which prompted him to move to a temporary home until the threats are investigated.
* And Brooks’ church was broken into Friday night…
“I don’t know who did it,” Brooks said. He did, however, say it was quite a “coincidence” that a burglar smashed a glass charity box in his church and stole $8,000 at some point overnight Friday into Saturday, just hours after he received the threatening phone calls.
A maintenance worker found the church’s back doors shattered Saturday morning. The money was being collected to build a community center across from the church. Police said they were notified of the burglary.
Brooks said the burglary isn’t going to stop church services or the fundraising needed to build the community center.
* There will, however, be no more politicians at Brooks’ church for the remainder of the campaign…
Brooks offered prayers for both Rauner and Quinn, but said that after Rauner’s appearance Sunday, politicians will no longer be invited to address his members — declaring that the nasty nature of the campaign has distracted from the church’s main mission.
* Rauner would only answer “We don’t know,” when asked by reporters if he thought the Quinn campaign was involved, but did say this…
“I’m very concerned,” Rauner said. “It seems like right at the time of his involvement and support of our campaign, some very bad things are happening. It’s very upsetting.”
“I don’t believe at any time any threats or intimidation are proper in any election. I’ve said that before,” Quinn said. “I also think it isn’t right for any candidate to go around Illinois trying to cut the minimum wage and take thousands of dollars out of the pockets of people who live from paycheck to paycheck earning $8.25 an hour.”

I am extremely distressed that courageous pastor Corey Brooks and his family received multiple vile racist threats and their church burglarized for expressing a political viewpoint he believes would best improve his community. I have the privilege of being friends with Pastor Brooks and believe there is no one in Chicago who has done more to stop violence in his community and courageously tell the truth about inner city problems. We all need to stand with him against these unacceptable threats. In addition, we need the Department of Justice to immediately investigate and hold accountable the persons responsible.”

“I think it ought to be investigated at every level. There’s no room for intimidation in political campaigns, left, right or center. There’s no room for violence, including property violence. I believe there should be a complete investigation.”
“It’s worthy of taking up with the U.S. Attorney’s office so that they look into it.”

Or is is a campaign ploy by someone like Rauner who has a history of scary tactics and thuggery. On FB, I see comments from black voters who aren’t buying what Corey Brooks and Rauner are dishing out.

I saw a lot of coverage of the Brooks story over the weekend and in none of the stories did the reporter ever indicate whether or not they actually took the time to asked the police if they thought politics or intimidation were the motives for the break-in. Shouldn’t the police at least be asked that? Typical of the awful reporting we see…no reason to actually evaluate the facts, just throw the accusations out there and move on.

The whole thing just doesn’t pass the smell test. My first reaction to the theft of $8,000 that I kept in a glass case wouldn’t be, “it’s political.” I certainly wouldn’t see anybody saying, “Hey, let’s steal $8,000 from him. That’ll teach them. Rauner’d never have the money to replace $8k.”

This reminds of when Mel Reynolds was, um, attacked right before Election Day during his campaign to unseat Gus Savage. He appeared on camera several times with a bandage on his face. It made for good television.

Oh stop being an idiot. It was odd but it did not such thing. I thought it was just as odd that Rauner said “we don’t know” when asked if he thought the Quinn campaign was involved. This goes right to the point being made in another post on here: appearances matter.

Adding, I think this was staged. But who is it really going to sway? I can’t imagine anyone sipping their morning java reading this story and thinking to themselves “well, this is the straw that breaks the camel’s back, I am voting for Rauner”.
To channel Mike Sneed: methinks this has more to do with Pastor Brooks getting airtime and ink than the election.

For those of us who are Black, live or work on the South side of Chicago, and are familiar with the Black clergy, this news of “break-ins” and “threats” being levied against Pator Corey Brooks for supporting Republican nominee Bruce Rauner is not surprising at all. Beyond my great disdain for threats or intimidation, the feigned outrage by Democrats is really appalling…

Then nothing. Even if it was proven to be a ploy, which I believe it was, there is no upside to pursuing it. It would be like swimming in molasses to sort out Corey Brooks’ antics.

I’m not buying it.
Break in this weekend and Bruce Rauner just happens to be due to appear there for a media availability on Sunday?
Who did it? Democrats? Oh c’mon, does anyone think anyone in any official capacity with the Democrats would give Booker/Rauner/Oberwies an opportunity like this?
NBC5 said there were security cameras, so there must be video. If not, then why?
In 2007 I worked on an aldermanic campaign and our opponent (the incumbent) was a victim of vandalism, when we found out we pressed for an investigation and once it started looking like it was an inside job the investigation was dropped.
I encourage the authorities to investigated these immediately.
Brooks has made some accusations about Democrats being behind this and, as expected, his conservative allies in social media have criticized “those intolerant Dems.” Really, really convenient about 10 days out from a campaign.
Was NBC5 right? Are there cameras? Is there tape? This should be a quick and easy investigation.

Did Quinn send armed thugs to try to intimidate the Libs off the ballot?
Did Quinn bus in profanity-spewing hecklers to disrupt a debate?
Did Quinn benefit from secretly funded negative ads against potential primary opponents?
Did Quinn muscle a reporter for doing his job?
Did Quinn threaten a state legislator?
Is there a candidate in the race who would do such things?

It is shocking that a man of faith is terrorized and robbed and his family threatened because of a free choice in a candidate for Governor ? Will Quinn and the Democratic Machine stop at nothing ? Is nothing sacred to them ? This kind of thing is EXACTLY why everyone wants change. This incident is brings home the ‘why’ in why the people are going to vote to elect Bruce Rauner for Governor on November 4th.

I wish the U.S. Attorney would get the FBI on this one right away, before the trail goes cold, so we can know what kind of dispicable person robs a church and makes threatening phone calls because of politics. It’s disgusting and we need proof of who was responsible before the election so this doesn’t taint the process.
Maybe the Sun-Times will continue to investigate after the election too. They’ve given it enough ink in the run up, I’d be shocked it they didn’t continue to try and get to the bottom of this story eventually. Shocked I say.

It’s always been my understanding that churches are tax-exempt under US Internal Revenue Code 501(c)(3) and are prohibited from endorsing a political candidate under threat of losing that exemption. I seem to remember that this was an issue for the Roman Catholic Church when JFK ran for president. Shouldn’t the IRS be looking at this, and shouldn’t our media watchdogs be hammering this point?

The phoned threats are egregious, and should be investigated. It sounds like a crackpot call to me.
The theft might not be related to the political issue, in that no messages or widespread vandalism occurred. $8K there for the taking, and sometimes the obvious is as far as it goes.
Durbin said the right things. No add-on messages.

Threats and intimidation are always wrong of course. Should be a full investigation obviously.
Only wish Corey Brooks hadn’t remained completely silent re sworn testimony claiming that Rauner threatened a female executive and her family. Same re criminal complaints filed by Libertarian Party over openly armed investigators used in failed attempt to keep Rauner’s competition off the ballot.
Rauner knows good and well the Quinn campaign isn’t stupid enough to have anything to do with this Brooks matter. Could it be some unrelated goons? Yes possible sure.
But Brooks does have some past controversy in the fundraising area, including last year when he sent #2,000 of his congregation’s money to the convicted former mayor of Detroit who stole from taxpayers. Brooks never accused of anything illegal on this but many in his congregation were not happy. His church isn’t that big anymore if you noticed.

Pastor Brooks LOVES the spot light and seems to do whatever to get attention. I don’t buy this story for one second.
I am angered that this has gotten so much attention when much of Rauners shady business deals, bullying and intimidation hasn’t been covered by most news utlets besides here.

If this is real, my guess is the criminals were a lot more interested in the $8,000 than anything political.

We are arguing over whether Quinn people attacked Rev. Brooks’ church or Rauner has set up a false flag operation. This comes on the heels of both candidates being placed one degree away on the Kevin Bacon scale from murder. (Quinn with early release, Rauner with nursing homes)

Senator Durbin’s response was appropriate and fair. Governor Quinn’s was not.
This post just proves how hyper-partisan this state and this website have become.
Former St. Louis Mayor Freeman Bosley, Jr. routinely alleges that any black person who even votes Republican is an “Uncle Tom”. And he is not some fringe personality - he’s the former mayor of a large Midwest city. Mayor Bosley has gone on national media and made that allegation.

Rich - Freeman Bosley, Jr. was mayor of Saint Louis - not East Saint Louis. Mayor Bosley served in that capacity from 1993 through 1997.

I don’t doubt that this could have been staged or that it was really done because of him not supporting a democrat.

A man gets threatened and Governor Quinn wants to give irrelevant campaign talking points. Quinn’s response was really inappropriate.

We can all agree that PQ should have stopped after his first sentence, taken a deep breath and a long pause and invited questions on other issues. But in all the years of PQ campaigns, threats and break-ins are just not his style. In his one campaign BR does come across as a guy who might think this is good idea to try to pin on his opponent. Some pastors labor quietly in the vineyard of the Lord. Others camp out on rooftops in full view of cameras. Just wonder who got the first call, CPD or the press?

Do I think there is any chance that the Quinn campaign is behind this? No. Do i think it is a false flag? No. Do I think it is possible he got threading messages from a Quinn supporter? Yes. That being said I do not think Quinn should of brought up campaign issues in his response. Contrast his response to Durbin’s.

Come on Pastor brooks, why would you make reference to blacks voting for Quinn is like stayiing on the plantation? Did Rauner’s family own slaves? I have not found one person that believes your account of events. Why would you leave $8k,in a glass case. I could think of millions of people, including myself that might take it. Shucks! Those Democrates got it first.
