  1. Now that brought back some great memories, at least I think that’s what I remember from that time period in my life (it was kinda of foggy). Great stuff Rich.

  7. This was the very definition of “morning jolt” when Sly & Co. performed “Higher” at Woodstock in 1969. They reportedly took the stage at 3:30 a.m.!

  8. I have had another Sly song in my head, “One child grows up to be, somebody who just loves to learn”

  9. There’s a Fatboy Slim song with the lyric “If this don’t make your booty move, your booty must be dead.” If this don’t make your booty move, your booty must be dead. Man, I’d love to play in a band like that!

  10. Fantastic choice. A misunderstood musical genius he is..

    I have a number of Sly songs on my phone, and when I need to light a fire under myself, I reach for some Sly..

  13. Actually, Sly was watching “Family Affair” with the carnival music and wrote “Family Affair” in the hopes it would be the new theme song. Urban legend but makes sense.

  14. Can’t help but think of the riot at Grant Park by the old band shell in the summer of 1970 when Sly didn’t show for his concert. For the first couple of hours of the riot, the Chicago police were on the loosing end. Police cars overturned and set on fire, policemen scrambling for their lives.

    Then eventually it ended up with two battle lines across a grassy area, just like an old Civil War battle. The reporters later said that usually the best place to stand was behind a police line. But not that day - for awhile the police line in riot gear were driven back with many fallen officers.

    I wish Sly would have showed. I was looking foreword to his concert. A few years ago he tried to make a comeback. But he soon fell into his old bad habits of not showing up for his concerts. Too bad. A great talent.

  15. So it’s the cops fault that Sly didn’t show?

  17. =So it’s the cops fault that Sly didn’t show? =

    There were many reasons a riot took place. 80,000 people squeezed in an area the size of a baseball field on a sweltering summer day. Drugs, booze, the Vietnam War. The concert was one Sly was giving for free to make up for an earlier Chicago concert he also failed to show at.

    For some it was payback time for the beatings from the police at the 68 Democratic Convention protests.

    There is a long Chicago Tribune article written a couple of days after the 1970 Grant Park riot, titled “Anatomy of a Riot” that covers the reasons in detail.

  18. the proof is in the music. is it good? yes it is. still makes me dance and sing. Sly was about great music but he was also about social change. he did not have a boys only or one color only band. While it was true that women were in a few bands back then, they were mostly singing. Not with Sly. To have a woman blasting away on trumpet was a radical act in music at the time. there was great discrimination in even high school bands. to be the first chair, or only trumpet player was a coup. a band leadership issue. And with Dance to the Music, we got names for the players right in the song. women and men, rocking out together.

  19. Maybe it’s just me, but I thought Sly did his best work post-Woodstock. There’s A Riot Goin’ On is brilliant, as is Fresh, as Stand! Not appropriate for wake-up music, but his version of Que Sera Sera is the best ever, and Thank You for Talkin’ To Me Africa (also not appropriate for wake-up music) is better than Thank You Flettinme Be Mice Elf (or however you spell it) that inspired it.

    If Rich takes requests, he should consider a cut off Amazing Grace by Aretha Franklin. Hands down, the best gospel recording ever made, and if that stuff won’t get you moving in the morning, nothing will. Keith and Mick were said to be in the audience and legend has it that Exile On Main Street wouldn’t sound anything like it does if they hadn’t been there.

  20. Rich, whatever you post should make people tap their feet. To get a belt buckle that size, try a Cowboy/Western wear store. Some of those helt buckles are the size of dinner plates.
