*** UPDATED x3 - Removed from YouTube *** Ketchup? Really, Bruce?

Posted in:

* There should be legal penalties for this…

We got it on video folks… Bruce Rauner ordered a hot dog with ketchup at Portillos today via @dailyherald http://t.co/bXPT7lA8L0

— Melissa Silverberg (@m_silverberg) October 28, 2014

/snark

*** UPDATE 1 *** The staffer takes the fall…

Hey, that hot dog with ketchup was for me. What happened to a woman's right to choose?

— Lyndsey Walters (@lyndseywalters) October 28, 2014

*** UPDATE 2 *** I think the Rauner folks may be a bit on edge about this. They sent over a link to this video from July which shows the candidate ordering a hot dog at Portillo’s with “everything.” It’s about 30 seconds in

* From Portillo’s menu

With everything includes: mustard, relish, freshly chopped onions, sliced red ripe tomatoes, kosher pickle and sport peppers piled onto a perfectly steamed poppy seed bun.

So, he appears to be clean.

But, still, somebody wants ketchup on a hot dog, make them order their own darned hot dog.

Also, check out the results for a Twitter search of Rauner and Ketchup. This thing went viral in a hurry. No wonder they had the rapid condiment response team cranked up to full pour.

What a world.

*** UPDATE 3 *** As you can see by clicking the YouTube link above, the video “has been removed.” But you can still watch it at the Daily Herald’s site by clicking here.

He really is an outsider shaking up Portillo’s!

  16. I like my dogs with mustard too but who really gives a flying burrito what anyone else puts on a dog? Oh wait, Chicagoans do, cause they are the purveyors of fine hotdog cuisine, among other things. My bad..I forget sometimes.

  17. Since Hot Dougs closed, there is no longer any etiquette or hard and fast rules to abide by in the Frankfurter category; only guidelines. Let’s hope there was a child in the car waiting for the hot dog with ketchup.
This is tougher than any ad yet. :(

  29. Quinn Ad?

(Fade in to perfect Chicago style hotdog, slowly zoom out to see table)

V.O. - if Bruce Rauner had his way, the Chicago Hot Dog would look like this…

(Ketchup spread all over the hot dog, table, messily applied to leave a bad visual of hot dog, with one last ‘plop’ of ketchup way over-applied on the middle of the hot dog)

Did Bruce Rauner really think ketchup is good on hot dogs? Did Bruce Rauner think…no one would find out?

(Fade to black from hot dog)

I shuddered after reading that back.

Comment by Dave Dahl Tuesday, Oct 28, 14 @ 4:46 pm

  58. @Lindsey Walters, with your tweet, “what happened to a woman’s right to choose?” regarding a hot dog condiment, way to make light of reproductive choices, but, then, with Sanguinetti on the ticket, you’re already doing that, right?

Comment by Amalia Tuesday, Oct 28, 14 @ 4:48 pm

  59. I might in fact be guilty of a worse crime. I would prefer a hot dog with mustard and perhaps dill relish and sauerkraut to the “garden on a bun” as I don’t care for the tomatoes and sweet relish on it. But give me a Maxwell Street polish like at the Cell with grilled onions, mustard and sport peppers and I will destroy that thing.

Comment by Ron Burgundy Tuesday, Oct 28, 14 @ 4:50 pm

  60. Have those of you complaining ever tried ketchup on a hot dog?

It tastes good, particularly if you add tomatoes, onions and mustard.

Don’t fall for the “we hate it” thing before you try it.

Comment by Gooner Tuesday, Oct 28, 14 @ 4:50 pm

  63. Ketchup. Hot dog. Clueless.

But, Rauner’s just an average guy; like you and me. Just clueless.

Clueless: like his ‘no plan’ to reduce taxes while increasing programs. And, all the rest ‘no plans’ he hasn’t got.

It always amazes how someone who thinks he/she is a ’success’ in one field or endeavor thinks that will translate to some totally different area or endeavor.

    Clueless; just totally clueless.

Well when the issue is whether a man’s hot dog choices make him fit for governor, can the response really be all that serious?

Comment by Nony Tuesday, Oct 28, 14 @ 4:54 pm

  67. @Nony, silliness over hot dogs brings insensitivity over reproductive choices. I’ll be happy to win that fight any day.

Comment by Economic Justice Tuesday, Oct 28, 14 @ 5:02 pm

  74. Rauner spends more time worrying about hot dog gate than he does about reproductive choices with his “I want to criminalize abortion” running mate Sanguinetti and a staffer who mocks choices. very, very sad.

Staffer tweets joke about abortion. Exits stage right. Way right.

Comment by Anonymiss Tuesday, Oct 28, 14 @ 5:04 pm

  76. The joke about reproductive rights shows how terribly run the Rauner campaign has been.

Only Rauner can get mocked for something silly and then have staff blunders turn into something relatively serious that will push away suburban women.

You don’t have the crazy like mandatory trans vaginal ultrasounds, shutting down clinics over hallway widths, admitting rights, etc., like you see In Wisconsin, Texas, Mississippi, etc.

Can you believe how far you have to degrade the language to be a “conservative” requiring mandatory transvaginal ultrasounds?

You still don’t get it. You wouldn’t know if you’re a guy. Hello? Earth to Rauner staff and supporters? Anyone home? Hello?

Comment by low level Tuesday, Oct 28, 14 @ 7:26 pm

  140. Dear Lyndsey Walters,

In your rush to defend a Dopey, mockable, fun, culinary “error”, you neglected to understand, that as a flack, making a fun/funny story become about an insensitive tweet, inadvertently mocking a social issue, and an issue yiu Principle avoids, reminds me how Bush League your Press Shop is.

While forwarding videos of the Principle offing a hot dog “correctly” is cranked out at the speed of the internet, your Dopey and ignorantly flippant tweet also was released as quick. If Rauner’s flacks can’t answer policy questions with that speed, or deny questions of the Principle at a rate of 3 a session, you deserve this mocking for the Press Shop too.

Bruce Rauner must have instilled fear in the premise that image is everything, and perception is to be controlled at all costs. At. All. Costs. I mean, how quick was that retort video up? How fast was your tweet to take the heat for…ketchup…tweeted?

So fast, that the perception and image of choice is now, again, being ridiculed.

If you think it helped, it didn’t. You pointed out, once again, that the Rauner Crew is about protecting style, at the cost of substance, and positions and beliefs are just collateral damage.

You are a Press Secretary. You are not a civilian. You are InIt, your words matter, carry weight, and speak to an impression of the Principle. “Tweets are my own” doesn’t absolve Dopiness, when “your own” tweet is defending your boss.

I am embarrassed for you, that you felt the need to deflect, and you chose expediency over message, and sometimes humor, if you have to explain it, it doesn’t work.

Either be a professional all the time, with a shop that has lightning responses for ketchup, or be the amateur, and tweet, than think, then choose what is trivial to respond to, and what is expected from a professional when having fun with a culinary “mistake”

Decide which you want to be, as that Dopey tweet remains, with no apology in the offing. Pathetic.

    It’s up to you.

However, as multiple folks have pointed out - these people are - in theory - attempting to run a statewide campaign. For the press sec for the republican candidate to make a flip joke that offends potential voters (again, hello!) is absurd.

I mean, I would like if I thought that Brucie cared about the actual issues. But since he obviously doesn’t, is it too much to ask that he ACTS like a real candidate, rather than just dumping another 3 or so million into his campaign every so often?

  177. This “issue” exposes the absolute emotional insanity raging within the anti-Rauner folks.

I don’t like ketchup. It is disgusting to put it on a hot dog. It is disgusting to put it on any meat, frankly. Mustard and onions, maybe a sport pepper - but don’t put ketchup on my hot dogs or hamburgers. I’ve traveled the world and lived in other lands. Outside Chicago, people put ketchup on hot dogs.

However, if Rauner really does eat hot dogs with ketchup, that would not be a problem as most Americans do. Just as it is not vital that we have a charming governor, we don’t need a culinary one either. Our real problems are bigger.

Its pretty pathetic to make this a big deal.

Comment by VanillaMan Wednesday, Oct 29, 14 @ 8:49 am

  178. Just as Oswego’s post perfectly captured everything wrong with Team Quinn, Vanilla’s last post perfectly captured the New and Even More Angry Vanilla Man.

Vanilla? Most people are laughing at Rauner for the ketchup error. If you had a sense of humor, you would get it.

In contrast, they are not laughing at his mouthpiece for her reproductive rights joke.

Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, Oct 29, 14 @ 9:48 am

  181. So “the right to choose” does not reference reproductive rights?

A Guy, out of curiosity, do you care at all about your credibility? I mean, I know most of us post under assumed names, but still, for some of us there is a desire to viewed as existing in a reality based world. That’s not an issue for you, is it?

Comment by Gooner Wednesday, Oct 29, 14 @ 9:49 am

  182. Sometimes, with women’s issues, people get all backward and confused, accusing the people who aren’t laughing of having an impaired sense of humor, NOT the creators of tasteless and insensitive hack “jokes.”

So maybe it would help Lyndsey (and her boss and the rest of the campaign) to imagine this kind of anti-ketchupgate tweet going out:

“Hey, that hot dog was for me. I like it to hemorrage ketchup like it got Ebola!”

Comment by crazybleedingheart Wednesday, Oct 29, 14 @ 10:01 am

  183. It’s malpractice on malpractice.

We all know that Portillo’s has 57 million delicious things. Why did Lyndsey order a hot dog with ketchup and not a char chicken? Because ordering at Portillo’s was about creating an image and chicken sandwiches aren’t it. OK…then don’t half-*** the image.

Once the mistake is made, don’t make yourself the story and don’t send out some tasteless hack joke that highlights, of all things, the same completely disjointed plank on your platform that you’ve been trying to ignore for a year.

Comment by crazybleedingheart Wednesday, Oct 29, 14 @ 10:09 am
