Quinn’s “You know me” ad reappears

Posted in:

* Gov. Quinn used this same type of ad in the 2010 primary and general elections with success. He’s certainly a man of habit…

As early voting continues this week, Governor Pat Quinn talks about his lifelong fight for everyday Illinois residents and the choice that voters face in the closing ad of his campaign for re-election.

* The new ad

* The 2010 primary ad

* The 2010 general election ad

Which do you like the best?

…Adding… The Rauner campaign anticipated this closer ad with a couple of their own Web ads earlier this month…

* Do you know Pat Quinn?

* NRI Blues

  1. It is a good ad for an incumbent.
He is reminding voters who chose him before that what they’ve heard during the campaign by the challenger shouldn’t change their mind about voting for him again.

This should have always been his approach since the primary.

    He won the last time.
Remind folks why they should help him win again.

    Simple and not negative.

  2. The fact that many of us know Quinn is why this is a horse race rather than a slam dunk in a reliably Democratic-leaning state.

As for the billions in savings that Quinn claims to have gifted us with, the dollars and cents must be like those worthless class action settlement coupons that seldom get redeemed.

  3. None. The message is tired. Still disappointed that Hynes did not win.

  4. Which do you like the best?

    The primary version.

What I find amazing is how the 2010 ad is making the same reasons to vote for Quinn as the latest 2014 version of the ad. Fact is, we should be seeing and hearing him list in 2014 some accomplishments based on that 2010 ad.

  5. I like the 2010 primary ad the best. But then, I would. :)

  6. Saw the new one this morning.

What makes it better than the Rauner Ad?

The very contrasting image of Diana Rauner the prop and crutch to Bruce, on a couch, versus Quinn, outside, reminding people they know him, for the good or the bad, and by knowing him, he asks for the vote.

    “B+, A-”

    Why not the “A”?

The Billionaire verbiage. Take that sentence out, rewrite, now that is a solid “A”, but the better of the two closes.

To the Question, which is best?

The close of the newest one, asking for the vote, best last 7 seconds of the three, and really has more of a personal touch that the other two took you to the line, but never asked the way the new one does.

Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, Oct 29, 14 @ 11:23 am

  7. The past adds much better. He should have talked about Ford or Amazon why even take a swipe at Raunor!
    Maybe a C-

Comment by Summer Wind Wednesday, Oct 29, 14 @ 11:24 am

  8. No choice, really. They’re pretty much the same spot.

Comment by Wordslinger Wednesday, Oct 29, 14 @ 11:25 am

  9. This is how you close, according to the plan, abd this is the Pat Quinn formula. He’s not changing a thing while Rauner is going on and on about Ebola and vote fraud and monsters under the bed.

    Comment by 47th Ward Wednesday, Oct 29, 14 @ 11:26 am

  10. Ok after reading Willy I will bump it up but no better than a C

Comment by Summer Wind Wednesday, Oct 29, 14 @ 11:26 am

  11. The 2010 primary ad is the best of the lot, but they’re all not bad. Agree with OW that the billionaire verbage takes away from the Quinn ad. Makes hims sound sophmoric, actually. Don’t agree with OW about Rauner’s closing ad. Diana Rauner helps Bruce sell himself.

Comment by phocion Wednesday, Oct 29, 14 @ 11:27 am

  12. I agree with - Oswego Willy - , the 2014 ad is a bit better than the other two. The direct ask is the last few seconds makes it a better closer.

Comment by RNUG Wednesday, Oct 29, 14 @ 11:27 am

  13. I like the new one. He comes across as sincere and actually asks for your vote.

  14. 2010 general human touch with everyday people shaking hands is more effective in my humble opinion

Comment by regular democrat Wednesday, Oct 29, 14 @ 11:31 am

  15. I prefer the 2010 primary, largely because of the close “Me? I’m counting on you.” But the new ad is better than the 2010 general.

Comment by Juice Wednesday, Oct 29, 14 @ 11:32 am

  16. OW is right about the direct appeal at the end of the new one. It’s nice.

Comment by Soccermom Wednesday, Oct 29, 14 @ 11:32 am

  17. Every old is new again. No real difference. If it works, he’s an old shoe enough people are comfortable with. Even though it’s the same shoe that’s been kicking the tails of many of the people supporting him. Oh well.

If it doesn’t work, it’s because people want new shoes.

Comparing it to Rauner’s ad is just plain Willy goofy. One guy’s married, the other isn’t. That’s clear. If that matters to people, they have a choice based on that.

Good luck to both of them. I sympathize with anyone who’s had to go through this grind. It’s unfair, mean, humiliating and humbling. Anyone who goes through it deserves credit and a debt of gratitude.

    Comment by A guy... Wednesday, Oct 29, 14 @ 11:33 am

  18. 47th Ward start watching some real TV and stay off the internet.
Raunor has been by far more positive then Quinn in the last 2 weeks. It’s Quinn who has been nothing but negative after negative after negative.
Killing old ladies and now the sick baby add.
Please give credit where credit due.
He has all but wanted everybody to believe if Raunor is elected It might as well be Dexter or JJ Holmes!

Comment by Summer Wind Wednesday, Oct 29, 14 @ 11:33 am

  19. ==The fact that many of us know Quinn is why this is a horse race rather than a slam dunk in a reliably Democratic-leaning state.==

This. When you’re relatively new to the office, as Quinn was in 2010, these ads, which are essentially “you can trust me” ads, can work….but when you’ve been in office already for 6 years and the public perceives the same problems still existing that they trusted you to fix four years earlier….this rings pretty hollow.

Comment by Anonymoiis Wednesday, Oct 29, 14 @ 11:37 am

  20. Very different than Bruce and Diane Rauner’s closer.

The Rauner’s weren’t bad, but this is simpler and stronger for a personal connection with the candidate.

These ads are not judged by factual content, but by an image of connection, trust and caring. That final image can make one discount much of the previous attack ads.

  26. What a choice we have: Bruce kills old ladies while Pat’s DCFS kill babies.

Where have you gone Adlai Stevenson? The Prairie State turns its lonely eyes to you.

  28. The last approval rating I saw for
Quinn was 34 percent. The reason the race is close is because he’s made it so. Rauner was way up in the summer.

As far as “reliably blue state,” that’s just victim talk. The GOP won seven governors races in a row, then last twice to Blago and once to Quinn.

If you’re looking for something to blame for that, try the mirror. A lot of those swing-vote independents used to be solid Republicans.

  31. ===Comparing it to Rauner’s ad is just plain Willy goofy. One guy’s married, the other isn’t. That’s clear. If that matters to people, they have a choice based on that.===

Bruce Rauner can’t close the deal without his wife? Diana Rauner is in Ads, is she in the ballot?

    Further,

Have you been asleep commenting? We compare and contrast here all the time. Crime Ads, Senior Ads, negative Ads, so comparing closing Ads is well within reality.

Having a husband and wife go sentence to sentence to “sell” me, I gave it a. “B-, C+”, better than Gentleman’s “C”, but it was what it was.

My Quinn Ad critique is up there. Quinn asked for the vote. Asked. He has no prop or crutch, reminded us we know him, here are the highlights, vote accordingly.

It’s “fundamentally” better as a close.

Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, Oct 29, 14 @ 12:06 pm

  32. Summer Wind - Dexter Morgan would make a great governor. All our problems would eventually be safely deposited in weighted trash bags in Lake Michigan.

  35. Quinn’s 2010 primary ad was close to, if not the most perfectly crafted, written, and produced campaign closer ad I’ve ever seen. His new close ad is really meh, and I would think might be rather disappointing to his supporters when compared to earlier versions of “you know me”. Asking for the vote is always good and he did that. If he’d been able to resist using the “billionaire” word for a more professional and classy close it would have helped. But his biggest problem in 2014 (that was not so much an issue in 2010) is that we really do know him as governor now.

Comment by Responsa Wednesday, Oct 29, 14 @ 1:13 pm

  36. Yes Pat, I know you. That’s why I’m not voting for you. I’m write-in voting for the next Governor of the State of Illinois, Oswego Willy.

Comment by Norseman Wednesday, Oct 29, 14 @ 1:17 pm

  37. I like the 2010 primary ad best and the current ad second best. However, I do prefer the close of the current ad where he asks for your vote better than the close of the 2010 primary ad.

    Comment by Mighty M. Mouse Wednesday, Oct 29, 14 @ 1:26 pm

  38. I like the 2010 “you know me” ads better than the 2014 one. He seems more sincere in those, he comes across looking a little pained in the new ad. Plus, if I hear the phrase “everyday people” (meaning what, exactly?) one more time, I might jam a fork in my eye.

    Comment by ??? Wednesday, Oct 29, 14 @ 1:32 pm

  39. Let’s see: You know me. Now you know me better. We thought we knew you. We don’t.

  40. Those 2010 ads were pre-NRI and IDOT. Lots of water over the dam since then and most of it brackish and foul smelling.

Comment by Paul Wednesday, Oct 29, 14 @ 2:50 pm

  41. yeah, I know Pat and voted for him already…he has accomplished a lot, paid down the deficit, closed prisons, hasn’t enriched himself on the public dime, and is basically a decent man and public servant…Pat is not corrupt, and every time Rauner compares him to Blago, I just laugh…hopefully the mold was broken after Rod…

Comment by Loop Lady Wednesday, Oct 29, 14 @ 3:23 pm

  42. It is funny that in addition to the “You know me” bit, Quinn always expresses dismay that his opponents would actually spend money to campaign against him! That he voices this complaint while filming a campaign spot advertising himself is goofy and surreal.

Comment by Under Further Review Wednesday, Oct 29, 14 @ 3:46 pm

  43. It was the Clincher Ad in 2010, and, well, the NEW version is reassuring, sincere, down to earth, empathetic (e.g. for a LOT of folks who DO care about raising the Minimum Wage!)–and the AD even emits his strength: HE’s the One who’ shown Leadership AS our Leader, ‘n made TOUGH Decisions not everybody’s always liked, but he’s still there NOT for the Billionaires like his OppOnent, but, rather for the “REST of us.” (i.e. the 99.99%). NOT quite the A+ Ad of November, 2010, but A Caliber to be sure–and may very well put him (barely) over the Top once again.

Pat Quinn–Man, ya just can’t deny he’s still quite the Pentultimate Closer, the Guy you’d want on the Mound in the 9th Inning to finish off a tough, extremely close Game…!

Comment by Just the Way It Is One Wednesday, Oct 29, 14 @ 7:16 pm

  44. I think it’s clear now that a spot we won’t see is one on all the job-creating successful businesses of GTCR. Or even one, for that matter.

Dudes been on TV for more than a year. If he coulda, he woulda, by now.

Rather glaring gap in the old resume for a guy whose whole reason for being is a claim he’ll do in the public sector something he can’t demonstrate having done in the private sector.

And in a capitalist society, isn’t the private sector where all that job-creating is supposed to happen? Not through some fantasy top-down statist model out of a governors office that’s really nothing more than corporate welfare and press releases?

Comment by Wordslinger Wednesday, Oct 29, 14 @ 10:53 pm

  45. ===a spot we won’t see is one on all the job-creating successful businesses===

He’s into wealth creation, not job creation.

Comment by Rich Miller Wednesday, Oct 29, 14 @ 11:09 pm

  46. @Just the Way It Is One:

Nope, the Clincher in 2010 was the NRI. Taxpayer funded walking around GOTV money for PQ,

Comment by Under Further Review Wednesday, Oct 29, 14 @ 11:24 pm

  47. That’s right, Upon. Election day walking around money that didn’t go out until months after election day. They did it on spec.

Sure did blunt that expected Brady juggernaut on the South and West sides.
