* Back in 2010, Gov. Quinn was so desperate for campaign cash that he borrowed $100,000 from his mom. He also borrowed hundreds of thousands of dollars from people like Emil Jones and Ed Burke.

This year, he hasn’t borrowed a dime. The cash has been flooding in. Yes, he’s being outspent by Bruce Rauner, but at least he hasn’t needed to ask his mother for a loan.

  1. When I saw the number 0, I thought it was the number of people who will admit to being rauner supporters on 11/5.

  2. Listen to your mother, Pat. You may want to put away your favorite purple tie given what has happened to Northwestern in recent games.

Comment by Under Further Review Sunday, Nov 2, 14 @ 1:30 pm

  3. I am betting that Quinn will still probably be outspent by $45 million dollars, and the fact this race is still so close and Quinn might actually win ought to freak Mayor Emanuel and City Council members out.

Comment by Yellow Dog Democrat Sunday, Nov 2, 14 @ 1:32 pm

  4. @william kelly–

    I had the same thought.

Comment by Union Leader Sunday, Nov 2, 14 @ 1:43 pm

  5. If Rauner had stepped on the gas in the summer when he had a big lead, Quinn would have had a hard time finding lenders much less contributors.

One of many curious decisions from the Rauner crew.

Comment by Wordslinger Sunday, Nov 2, 14 @ 2:06 pm

  6. It remains to be fully seen, however;

Make no mistake, Rauner was penny wise, politically ignorant.

Quinn wasn’t up to keeping up with $1 million a week from March to August 31.

By September 1, Quinn would have needed money from anybody named Quinn, including his mother.

It was malpractice no matter the outcome.

The staggering “Number of the Day” and it’s significance speaks volumes.

  7. Union leader, thank you, you made my day, let’s hope we are both right!

    Comment by William j Kelly Sunday, Nov 2, 14 @ 2:27 pm

  8. I can’t wait to hear the network pundits Tuesday night if/when Rauner loses. If he doesn’t pick up the downstate votes he needs they can’t blame it on the “Chicago machine”. I wonder if his campaign staff will put this run on their resumes.

Comment by Casual Observer Sunday, Nov 2, 14 @ 2:33 pm

  9. So tell me how a 62 year old man has to borrow 100,000 from his mom and is elected governor. No wonder this state is a financial mess.
That just has me shaking my head

Didn’t Rauner just take $27 million from his kids’ inheritance, or money that could have been invested in boosting poor neighborhoods, his newfound passion?

    Silly, silly argument.

  13. ===So tell me how a 62 year old man has to borrow 100,000 from his mom and is elected governor.===

Quinn devoted his life more to helping others, where Rauner put more emphasis on looking out for himself.

    Comment by Mighty M. Mouse Sunday, Nov 2, 14 @ 3:46 pm

  14. Yes, if/when he loses, Rauner will blame the Chicago Democrat (sic) Machine for his failures to expand his lead and outspend Quinn during he summer when he had the chance?

Again, the whole “personal accountability” thingy by conservatives really makes me laugh sometimes.

Comment by low level Sunday, Nov 2, 14 @ 4:00 pm

  15. Rauner is a hard nose, unlikable business man that has no political sense. Quinn has no sense. In my world a Rauner win with a split party rule would be in my pension’s best interest but I think Quinn’s gonna take it because if you have two bad choices then you pick the more likable choice, mom’s money unneeded…

No, you’re not clear, you’re just making stuff up and before you finish the sentence assuming that it’s true. My uncle did that. I loved him anyway.

    ===Back in 2010…he borrowed…from his mom.

This year, he hasn’t borrowed a dime. ===

I suggest you work on your reading comprehension. Rich used the past tense. Not still. It’s what we call “years” ago. Keep at it and you’ll get it.

  19. == “…but at least he hasn’t needed to ask his mother for a loan.” ==

Yeah; and he ain’t begged “Pocket Change-0.01%’er” Rauner for money either.

And, it still is close. Be a wonderful precedent in this day and age if money doesn’t buy an election.

    Comment by sal-says Sunday, Nov 2, 14 @ 6:31 pm

  20. I think it’s interesting that so many of the regular CapFax commenters are assuming that Rauner will lose on Tuesday. I thought the polls were still really close.

I must admit though, that if Rauner loses it will be proof that money can’t buy everything.

Comment by DuPage Dave Sunday, Nov 2, 14 @ 6:41 pm

  21. And at what interest rate did he get to pay his mom back…

Comment by Afar Sunday, Nov 2, 14 @ 7:13 pm

  22. Rauner won this race 2 weeks ago. The vote will just confirm what most people already know - Illinois is ready and willing for real change in Springfield. Bruce Rauner will bring that change and more. Biden, Michele O, the others cannot stop the will of the people. The Quinn campaign is in full ‘bunker’ mode right now - issuing orders to phantom armies of supporters that are just not there. Rauner’s campaign staff was often incompetent, granted, but Rauners message for real change resonated with the electorate. The money certainly helped. The insiders and those ‘in the know’ will have their tounges tied in knots late Tuesday night trying to explain the Quinn post mortem.

  24. I think Quinn will win Tues, but it has nothing to do with his qualifications. It has everything to do with Cook County making IL a blue state. And I don’t care who wins Tues, but I’m sick of IL having crappy leadership.

  25. Mr JM give me a break. Any man Dem or Rep that borrows money from his mom at that age is a joke. Please PQ has lived off the public trough for years. That’s a embarrassement to this state for it’s CEO not to have 100, 000 at his age.
I for sure wouldn’t want him running my business or the state I live in.

Comment by Anonymous Sunday, Nov 2, 14 @ 8:39 pm

  26. This actually is a big story. Pat Quinn may be doing a lot better than his critics think. He’s going to win Cook County by huge margins. He might even do WAY better down state then most people expect. The fact that he didn’t borrow money suggests he might even hit the 50% mark on Tuesday. Don’t be shocked if he does.

If Pat Quinn is “a joke”, your party lost to a joke in 2010 — and is scrambling like mad to keep from losing to a joke yet again on Tuesday.

You must be very, very proud.

  33. Anonymous,

the state’s CEO, or the “Governor,” although paid very well, does not get multi-million dollar bonuses for outsourcing jobs, laying off workers or jacking up the cost of medicine for little babies.

also, I’m sure I know plenty of 60-somethigs that do not have $100,000 in cash without cashing in pensions, IRAs, 401Ks with huge penalties and such.

Equating success only in terms of money. you can’t take it with you…

Comment by PoolGuy Sunday, Nov 2, 14 @ 10:39 pm

  34. Polling would suggest Pat Quinn could very well get 50%. Neither I nor Steve are saying with 100% certainty that he will get it. But, with the data you see, you really want to say there is a 100% chance Quinn won’t hit 50%?

Comment by Ducky LaMoore Sunday, Nov 2, 14 @ 10:41 pm

  35. also, my mother is in her 70s and does not have $100,000 in cash, and she is not pathetic or a joke. and if she had to loan me money if i was going through a rough patch, she wouldn’t think twice about it.

You qualify Pat Quinn as a single man. He is not. Just pointing that out. Has nothing to do with Bruce Rauner, his family, or the crappy van he makes the help drive.

  43. Scratch the single thing. But two kids. You can’t see why somebody with a gov’ment salary would not have six figures lying around?

Comment by Ducky LaMoore Sunday, Nov 2, 14 @ 11:24 pm

  44. Ducky the kids are grown and on there own. The man has made close to 800,000 since being elected governor. So not even counting those other years on the G payroll he has made a lot enough to bag a hundred G.
Now it just did dawn on me that with the out of control taxes he has stuck us with, maybe not!!!!!

  48. All that money spent on the 2 campaigns. For one candidate who has proven his inability to govern, and the other with a fiscal plan that is ridiculously unrealistic. Illinois loses again.

Comment by One of the 35 Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 8:11 am

  49. A proven inability to govern? Passed pension reform, lowered spending, balanced the budget, the only governor to actually make pension payments. He may be everyone’s punching bag, but he can govern.

Comment by Ducky LaMoore Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 8:19 am

  50. =A single man who is a lawyer working since graduating law school and doesn’t have 100,000 has some poor financial skills.=

He has children, who went to Fenwick. Among other normal costs and expenses that come with living life. Geez, if every lawyer is walking around with $100k in his pocket than why is there a huge student loan problem?

Comment by chi Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 8:29 am

=Union leader, thank you, you made my day, let’s hope we are both right!=

So, you support giving Quinn another disastrous term, and march in lock step with union leaders.

Congratulations! You’ve just moved from being a right wingnut to a leftwingnut! So much for your “conservative” bonafides!

Admit it lefty, you voted for Obama, correct?

Comment by Arizona Bob Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 8:31 am

  52. “I think it’s interesting that so many of the regular CapFax commenters are assuming that Rauner will lose on Tuesday. I thought the polls were still really close.”

Well, while the polls are close, a strong majority of them do show a PQ lead; when that many polls converge on a result, even a close one, you can have a lot more confidence in them. Besides that, while Rauner may have stronger GOTV than Brady, I don’t think anyone’s seriously suggested that it’s strong enough to overcome a Dem lead in Illinois (whereas we know the Dems GOTV can overcome a Republican lead), especially given that so many other aspects of his campaign- commercials, spending decisions, policy pronouncements, surrogates- have been so mediocre.

Rauner may very well win, but I see why people think Quinn has pulled this one out.

Comment by Arsenal Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 8:32 am

  53. Will the editorial board members get amnesia about their Rauner endorsements on Wednesday morning?

Comment by Carl Nyberg Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 8:32 am

  54. I am not alone here. I cant vote for Quinn. Need to pick up the ball not just kick it again!!

    Comment by tq958 Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 8:35 am

  55. Arizona boob, let me make it reeeeeeealy simple foooor you. If you are a conservative you can not trust rauner because of his ties to Rahm and if you are a liberal you can not trust Rahm because of his ties to rauner. Get it?

    Comment by William j Kelly Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 9:12 am

  56. The Rauner-Rahm-(Ken Griffin as silent partner) alliance does embody the 1% being against the rest of us.

Comment by Carl Nyberg Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 9:42 am

  57. Is there any rational argument that union leaders are the ones taking America in the wrong direction?

    How does this make sense?

If union leaders were so powerful, wouldn’t more and more of the workforce be unionized? Wouldn’t you expect right-to-work laws to be repealed?

If union leaders were calling the shots, wouldn’t they be living the lifestyles of Bruce Rauner?

Anyone with the most basic awareness should be able to see that unions are losing power in US society.

What’s infuriating about the cowardice of “Conservatism” is that regular people are constantly looking to blame some group with relatively little power rather than stand-up to the people who are abusing the social contract for their schemes to exploit and steal from the rest of us.
