Bruce Rauner helps bring backs the Illinois Republican Party. Now he needs to govern.

During his speech, Rauner mentioned jobs for “people who have to work” — then quickly recovered and said “people who want to work.” For some reason, that Freudian slip reminds me of one of the many reasons I have not been looking forward to having this man as my governor.

Interesting speech and comments he made about a half hour ago. If he really means it, could end up accomplishing things.
One way or the other, going to be an interesting 4 years.
Is it too early to start a pool on how many days he’ll be in office before he is at loggerheads with everyone else?

Rauner is a stone cold business man…who wants to be President of the United States. He knows he can’t get there without getting some BIG things done here, but not to big to upset the folks he needs to help him. The difference will be that when he cuts a deal, it will be honored…not like Quinn.

Day 1 of the lame duck session this year. Rauner needs a tax hike and he needs his own party’s caucus to vote for it, because the Dems sure as heck won’t.

Wow. Shocked at how well Rauner did downstate. Going in to today, I was actually most concerned about that (Grimm who?) Rauner ran up impressive margins in the suburbs and made it competitive in the city.
Why didn’t Quinn concede tonight? No way he can make up the difference. Not befitting a man with so much experience in politics.
Can we call the civil war between moderates and conservatives in the IL GOP over now?

Looking at the results - my prediction about Grimm not getting much of the vote was right - also Rauner picked up all of the third party vote that Brady missed.

Rauner was not an ideal candidate, but another loss would have rendered the Republican Party irrelevant for years to come. In many ways, I felt that my vote was more a repudiation of Quinn than an affirmative vote for Rauner. I am watching and waiting to see how Rauner goes about his duties. I know that four more years of Quinn would not have been too much different than the past six unhappy years.
Really disappointed at the lack of grace shown by Quinn on election night. If the vote were close, I could see his delaying his concession speech, but he was down 300,000 votes with about 94% of the precincts all ready reporting.
Coverage online was so much better than the television news. The numbers posted were more complete than anything on the television.

Didn’t like him at the State Fair in 2013. Liked him a lot on the campaign trail in 2014. Thank God we didn’t nominate Dillard. Adulation.

Optimistic that his campaign rhetoric was really just campaign rhetoric. Calling the Speaker and the President makes me feel that “Oh, maybe he gets it after all.”

A total wave nationally, but was it in Illinois? MJM didn’t lose a seat, right? Cullerton lost one? ‘Twas a referendum on Quinn and he lost that referendum, at least to me.
I’m amused by Republican’s thoughts that Quinn/Madigan/Cullerton will pass a lame duck income tax increase so Rauner can walk it back. I guess I could be naïve, but I don’t see that as realistic. Maybe I could see Madigan doing it if all Republicans voted for it and he only had to put a bare minimum on it, but otherwise? Can it happen?
Rauner is definitely a big winner - and I predicted otherwise - but it seems to me that Madigan is the real winner. Once again he defied a Republican wave and may have come out stronger.

Fearful of what his administration will do this state and the people of Illinois, but at least hopeful he can shell out some of his own money to make the needed repairs to the Executive Mansion.

If his history is an accurate guide he will “flip” the state by selling high in 2017 after buying low in 2014. He just needs to find a buyer. Trump?

I think that Rauner needs to approach the job with a view to getting important things done even if achieving results limits him to a single term.
This was a nasty campaign. The incumbent had every advantage available put into play, including a rewrite of the Election Code (at least for November 4, 2014), and still lost. Rauner’s win looks more impressive than what was prognosticated.

I would like to congratulate the Rauner campaign and Bruce Rauner for his victory tonight. It’s a victory that’s well-earned and hard fought. There should be no crying and whining from us who lost.
I liked Rauner’s acceptance speech. He didn’t say he was going to go after his adversaries and used no dog whistles.
I hope now that he governs as a moderate, and that there will be bipartisan solutions, grand bargain type of things.
I still very strongly believe in expanded health insurance, union rights, fair taxation and a minimum wage increase, and I will continue to debate these issues.

Thought Quinn would pull it out but in my own self interests, keeping my pension intact, a split government is the best case scenario. I’d be interested in how the public employees union vote went. I’d bet the rank and file didn’t vote too kindly for the man who signed the bill to diminish their pensions. Hopefully this election is also a wake up call for union leaders that squander dues money on candidates that act to harm their members..

I’m not surprised Rauner won…but the margin is somewhat surprising. It looks as if he’s going to win every County except Cook, and most by pretty large margins. That’s the sign of one heck of an organization, congrats to the Rauner team on a job well done.

I was wrong.
With a great deal of humility, and with no reservation or conditions, your deft skill at understanding what you were trying to accomplish and to do that, with technology, shoe leather, and a strong understanding of how Illinois as a battleground would react to your exceptional… exceptional… ground game tactics and dedication, you proved me wrong, embarrassingly wrong, and made the point loud and clear that your cake can bake, it was delicious for your Principle, and for me, it is baked with a double helping of crow, unconditionally.
Governor-Elect Rauner,
Congratulations on being elected the 42nd governor of our state. I wish you the sincere best wishes as you take the oath in January to lead Illinois for the next four years.
The challenges will be many, and I know your heart and love for this state will guide you in your job as our Executive in government.
Had your opponent won, I would have written this next paragraph the same as I write to you;
I did not vote for you, and I didn’t vote for your opponent either. I left it up to you to convince others as your road to victory. While you didn’t earn my vote, you earned my respect as our elected governor, and while there will be times I disagree, I look forward to the times I can follow your lead to make a better Illinois for us all.
Campaigning is hard, but governing is difficult. Many things will not be easy. Leaders I respect most are the ones I disagree with, but I know that the place they come from in the decisions they make for us all have our best interests at heart, even if getting where you lead may not be my first choice.
As you prepare your new administration, keep close to your heart your words you ran on, and if you keep Illinois as your constant concern, you will not fail, but succeed in leading from your leadership, not the title that allows it.
Congratulations, and congratulations to you and your campaign Crew and the thousands of volunteers that made your win possible.
It was a huge effort, led by you Governor-Elect Rauner, with leadership and teamwork.
Governing has the attributes too, and I look forward to that success story too.

In Cook County, Quinn’s numbers fell from 2010 significantly. It seemed as if the ward and township organizations did not push the ticket too much. Many county and state legislative offices were uncontested, so I am guessing that the precinct captains took it easy. Rauner did almost 20% in Chicago.

I wonder if Bruce will wake up later today feeling like the dog who finally caught the car he was chasing.
He gets to be governor with the two remaining pillars of “100 years of corruption” running their respective chambers with veto-proof majorities. As an added bonus, one of them is the father of a potential re-election opponent.
Each member of the Republican minority may be wondering who is in the “corrupt third” while thinking he would have won his race regardless of who won the gubernatorial race. The members of the minority may be more concerned about preventing primary challenges in the future than helping the guy in the governor’s mansion.
And speaking of the Constitution, the Supreme Court justices may still be ticked off at the grandstanding over the term limits initiative case. And they will have a major say in how Illinois can respond to its fiscal challenges.
Of course, he also gets to deal with a workforce whose unions he demonized during the campaign and who are wary of what lies ahead.
Even guys who normally run with his crowd, the ratings agencies, may not be his friends for long if he doesn’t come up with a plan to generate revenues to match Illinois’ expenses.
We will certainly be living in interesting times for the next 4 years. But for now, Rauner (and his crew) are entitled to celebrate.

I predict Rauner’s first State of the State speech will not be on loose leaf yellow legal pad paper. Too bad Quinn can’t still be in charge of something after January. Pat Quinn is a genuinely nice guy. Bruce has bare knuckles from years of business experience. Sometimes that means that you haven’t always been so nice. It’s an interesting feeling right now…In Quinn, there’s the guy you can’t help but love who told the truth about and earnestly tried to tackle our state’s many huge problems. But as nice and well meaning as he is, sometimes in business and politics you just have to fire people that have been inept or ineffective. Maybe Illinois wanted more of an egghead, manager-type businessman in charge than a lovable and folksy chucklehead. Or maybe it rained just enough that turnout was terrible in the precincts Quinn needed most.

As a lifelong Illinoisian, I have watched with disbelief and disappointment the last ten years in Illinois unfold. The worst in self-serving, irresponsible behavior has been exhibited by most of those elected to represent us. Feeling a lot of trepidation now, but certainly Governor-elect Rauner can’t do any worse.

Very disappointing in Quinn’s reaction and sour grapes. Let the will of the people be the law of the land. They spoke loudly and clearly.
I hope you instruct your staff to work in concert - and not against - the new administration during the transition. You’ve had some successes and left your mark on Illinois.

I’m really hoping that he’ll surprise me by governing with pragmatism, intelligence, and compassion. I also appreciate that there might be a realistic discussion of service taxes.
I’m sincerely disheartened by the apparent acceptance by voters and editorial boards of his ill-defined economic proposals, which seemed to be founded on the fantasy that Illinoisans can have more of everything we want while paying less for it.
As ineffectual as Quinn has been at times, he was uncommonly honest with people about that stuff. Maybe Rauner will give that tactic a try now that the campaign is done.
