*** UPDATED x1 *** Dold lands plum assignment, TCullerton wins some union nods

Posted in:

* Lynn Sweet

Rep. Bob Dold, R-lll., won a coveted slot on the House Ways and Means Committee on Wednesday, replacing former Rep. Aaron Schock, R-Ill., who resigned last month and now faces a criminal probe of his spending of taxpayer and campaign funds.

The House Republican Steering Committee handed the plum to Dold, said his chief of staff, James Slepian. “The issues he hears most frequently about are the economy, taxes and health care,” said Slepian, all areas under the Ways and Means panel jurisdiction. […]

Dold will have to surrender the seat he now has on the Financial Services Committee in order to join Ways and Means.

Other Illinois lawmakers on Ways and Means are Republican Rep. Peter Roskam and Democrat Danny Davis.

*** UPDATE *** DCCC…

To the Manor Born: Dold Inherits Schock’s Plush Committee Seat After Taking Schock Money

Looks like Aaron Schock has found an heir for his fashionable seat on the Ways and Means Committee: none other than Congressman Bob Dold. This comes just weeks after Dold “doubled down” on his refusal to donate to charity the tainted donations given to him by the disgraced former Congressman.

“Congressman Dold’s eager acceptance of Schock’s gilded Committee seat shows he’s only too keen to pick up where Aaron Schock left off when he left town in disgrace: doing the bidding of special interests in Washington,” said Matt Thornton, spokesman for the DCCC. “Congressman Dold is clearly Republican leadership’s anointed heir to a shameful legacy and will continue to be a reliable vote for his party.”

Man, is that ever a stretch.

* And from a press release…

A little over a week after announcing his exploratory bid for the 8th Congressional District, state Senator Tom Cullerton has secured the early support of several of Illinois’s largest labor unions. Supporters include International Union of Elevator Constructors Local 2, Teamster’s Joint Council 25, Laborers International Union of North America Local 68, and the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 150, and Utility Workers of America Local 18007. […]

“I am proud to have the support of the working men and women of these locals. I will be a relentless voice for those in labor and working people in Congress.” Cullerton said.

Sen. Tom Cullerton, prior to being elected to the State Senate was member of Teamster’s Local 734. He was a route salesman for Hostess Brands before they filed for bankruptcy in 2012. Cullerton is seeking the Democratic Party’s nomination for the 8th Congressional District.

  1. The 8th primary will very quickly turn into a “show me the money” affair. Given the restrictive federal campaign finance laws, that local union support will not translate into much $. I believe each PAC can only give $5,000 for the primary, and I don’t see the national union leadership getting involved and ponying up $ for an IE. So it will be interesting to see if Tommy C can keep funding raising pace with Raja, who announced 125k raised after only 2 weeks of fundraising this quarter

  2. Kirk were appropriators as was LaHood but perhaps a sign of the times-i.e. fundraising (and fact durbin and kirk are appropriators) that schock and now dold went this way.

    Approps was a much better campaign talking point ( ensuring $$ for Israel ect) , but as we saw in the chicago mayoral race, that big finance $$$$ can cover up an awful lot of pimples.

    Durbin keeping his whip gig?

  3. I don’t know Tom Cullerton, but this is a congressional Democratic primary and it’s gonna be real easy to cut an about all these years Tom Cullerton ostensibly was not supporting the Democratic Party as a Republican voter.

  5. Dear Democratic Party: the goal is to win the seat. pleasing the left lost us more than one Senate seat last round. lessons learned. did we take Lincoln Chaffee into our party? yes we did.

  6. well, it will certainly help him raise money, but t would be a much better assignment if boehner hadn’t taken away earmarks (still one of the key committees, but without tax reform, nothing much will happen in ways and means this congress)…

  7. The party back and forth statement really are over the top and disgusting.

  8. Bob Peickert the chair of DuPage County Dems considers Cullerton an enemy. When you see sniping like Precinct Captain’s in DuPage it’s usually one of Peickert’s minions if not Peickert himself doing the sniping. In this particular case it’s pretty funny and hypocritical that PC is saying Cullerton isn’t a Dem considering Peickert endorsed Tea Partier Kathy Hamilton and just helped oust the lone Democratic from the COD board. Peickert has endorsed a number of GOP candidates over the years.

    Please explain Tom Cullerton being a Republican up until he ran for state senate as a Democrat. By the way jack, I don’t live anywhere near DuPage County.

    Comment by Precinct Captain Thursday, Apr 23, 15 @ 2:33 pm

  10. @ Precinct Captain, just to be sure, you are against anyone coming into the Democratic Party who has ever been a Republican? not smart.

    Comment by Amalia Thursday, Apr 23, 15 @ 6:31 pm

  11. Correct that, one of two Dems on the board. I have no idea whether Cullerton used to be a Republican but he sure isn’t one now. Peickert had no problem installing a former Republican as chair in the Addison twp org. He lasted about a year before he got fed up and left. Amy Rohrer the executive director of the DuPage Dems doesn’t live anywhere near DuPage County either. She lives in Colorado. Is that you Amy?

    Comment by Anon Thursday, Apr 23, 15 @ 9:01 pm

  12. Precinct Captain please explain why the Dupage County Chair endorses Republicans and invites them to become members of the Dem party when clearly they could never be Democrats b/c they have previously pulled Republican ballots?

    Comment by burbanite Friday, Apr 24, 15 @ 10:00 am

  13. There’s plenty of people in DuPage County who pull Republican primary ballots because for years there were no Democrats to even vote for in the primary. Then they vote D in the general.
