Another fresh indictment thread - Liveblogging the Blagojevich press conference

Posted in:

*** UPDATE *** If you missed the press conference or just want to watch it again, CBS2 has posted the raw footage.

———————————————————————————

Let’s live blog the governor’s 7pm press conference together, shall we? You can watch it on ABC7’s website.

“Bill” is back, after a long day of not commenting, so I’m sure he’ll have plenty to say in comments. :)

* While we’re waiting, the Tribune has already posted an editorial about the day’s events.

U.S. Atty. Patrick Fitzgerald has a record of not letting the political calendar influence when his office unveils criminal indictments. But by laying out Wednesday what he called a “pay-to-play scheme on steroids,” Fitzgerald has created a list of crucial questions that Gov. Rod Blagojevich needs to answer as the Nov. 7 election fast approaches.

Fitzgerald’s allegations are as breathtaking as they are serious. A 65-page federal indictment he unsealed Wednesday charges one of Blagojevich’s top fundraisers with demanding millions of dollars in undisclosed kickbacks from investment companies that wanted to do business with the state’s $30 billion teacher pension system. If what the feds allege to have occurred on Blagojevich’s watch proves true, former Gov. George Ryan ought to wonder why he and all his corrupt cronies didn’t have more imagination.

* Really getting tired of listening to the weather on ABC7’s placeholder page.

* CBS2 will carry it as well.

* Here we go….

* “I feel for his family. I pray that these allegations aren’t true.”

* “A tremendous sense of betrayal”

* Donating Rezko’s campaign contributions to charity, but didn’t commit to donating the really big money that Rezko raised to charity.

* Gifts from Rezko: “Maybe some baby gifts involved, maybe a meal or two.”

* Q: Why should anyone believe what you’re saying now? Last year you said that you were confident that Rezko did things right? Answer: “If these allegations are true… He deceived me.”

* He’s doing a good job so far of staying on-message.

* “Personal scheme by two people who were trying to enrich themselves.”

* Now, he’s blaming it on the culture of Springfield, saying he was unaware of the problems at these pension boards and other boards.

* Uh… who is this non-journalist who wants a meeting?

* Tony… made some recommendations… involvement on political campaign side not government side… (But then turns around and brings up a state director that Rezko put in.)

* They’re letting him fillibuster.

* From what I saw, the Chicago reporters let him off the hook with unfocused questions. Wholly unsatisfying.

* And that’s a wrap.

* Rezko’s ties to Blagojevich hires/appointees:

    “Statement of Governor Rod Blagojevich:
The allegations in today’s indictments, if proven true, are a violation of my trust but far more importantly a betrayal of the public’s trust — the indictment details a pattern of self enrichment by two individuals, acting on their own, that is reprehensible. If these allegations are true, the individuals cited in these indictments should be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law. Wrongdoing must be punished.”

Comment by Troy News Guy Wednesday, Oct 11, 06 @ 7:28 pm

  37. Blago is on now. Considering he seems to have known nothing until the press and the U.S. Attorney pointed it out to him. Maybe he really is as dumb as he appears. I’m glad he thinks anyone who broke the law should be punished; and can’t wait until Blago gets his. What he has done to State government makes me ashamed to be a State employee, even more than when George was governor. He allowed an attorney at IFDPR to resign after the IG determined he was conducting a private law practice on state time on a daily basis and allows another attorney who hasn’t been seen in the office in years because she’s too sick to come in and doesn’t do full time work. Also even though she went to many Dr’s. appointment during work hours she got an extra personal day for not taking any sick time for a year. Even though the IG get the evidence on this she’s still there and nothing happened to her supervisor. That’s only the beginning.

Whoa, he’s talking about not covering it up, wasn’t he aware of the allegations a year ago, how did he act in the last year??

Love it, the culture exists in SPRINGFIELD!!, aren’t most of the accused from Chicago (along with the inherit corruption model)??

Of course, he forgot that Levine was in business with another Democrat (Joseph Cari)- and that there are others about to “confess their sins” as well.

I hope he was looking over his shoulder during that press conference, because I am sure the Feds were watching as well. It is going to be a fun next couple of weeks. I hope Bill got the talking points, because it may be a long week!

Comment by Roy Slade Wednesday, Oct 11, 06 @ 7:41 pm

  89. Thought it was interesting - as Rich noted in the first thread - the Levine and Individual A (?) approached Rezko and Individual B (?) to get a consolidation stopped - all the actions alleged seemingly occur after date. Question - what was Levine doing prior to Spring 2003, who were his partners (Cellini???), and why no indictments about that?

Comment by Smitty Irving Wednesday, Oct 11, 06 @ 7:52 pm

  90. Habitual liars can sell themselves to anyone at anytime. Many a time I’ve interviewed a suspect who lies so convincingly even when you present evidence to them that directly connects them to the crime. This Governor has the ability to convince himself first of his innocence. Convincing others is a cake walk from there.

Comment by proud state copper Wednesday, Oct 11, 06 @ 7:53 pm

  91. I am just an ocassional blogger. Is Bill always so delusional?

I am a Republican but I can’t even have imagined voting for George Ryan four years ago. Its the same thing with Rod. How can anyone take him seriously any longer.

Seriously, they’re all going to prison.

Comment by El Conquistador Wednesday, Oct 11, 06 @ 7:56 pm

  94. I’m a Democrat and although I’m not a huge fan of Judy’s will be proudly casting my vote for her. Yes, Bill is always the way he’s been tonight and proud state copper got it right. When someone has no consciense, it’s easy to lie and look truthful.

Comment by fed up dem Wednesday, Oct 11, 06 @ 7:57 pm

  95. 333 comments on this subject today and counting. I know that’s a record.

Comment by Yellow Dog Democrat Wednesday, Oct 11, 06 @ 7:57 pm

  96. As George Costanza says…. If you believe it’s true, it’s not a lie.

Comment by Troy News Guy Wednesday, Oct 11, 06 @ 7:58 pm

  97. Rod wants us to believe the following scenario:
Rod: Tony, that company that just hired Wyma wrote us a check for $250,000 after they got that multi million $ pension contract.
    Rezko: Really? Didn’t Notice.
Rod: They must really like us, Tony!
Rezko: Yes, they do. You’re a good, honest man.
Rod: They really believe in what we’re doing to clean up government. They are good government people, Tony. Look at all the cash rolling in. People really support our reform and renewal agenda, Tony!
Rezko: Yes they do, Governor, yes they do.

Comment by Truth Wednesday, Oct 11, 06 @ 7:59 pm

Comment by anon Wednesday, Oct 11, 06 @ 8:05 pm

  100. Good question. When he was asked the do you think you’ll be indicted in a year question it appeared like a deer about to hit by a truck if only distracted for 1/4 f a secnd. It was telling. Wouldn’t want to be him right about now.

    Comment by Anon -2 Wednesday, Oct 11, 06 @ 8:09 pm

  101. Let me get this straight, Ryan, a Republican was convicted. These two individuals are a Republican and a Democrat; so if the Blago is convicted, then we have two Democrats and two Republicans? I say dump both parties and actually try something different–vote for Rich Whitney and put the Green Party into office. One thing is for sure, you KNOW he’s not corrupt.

  104. For loyal Democrats caught in the crossfire and unhappy about voting for JBT, Whitney is the only “Democrat” left in the race.

Also, do we really think we won’t be here in 4 years wondering if a Republican administration can pull off a victory in the face of pending indictments?

Comment by Anonymous Wednesday, Oct 11, 06 @ 8:18 pm

  105. In my opinion, our Governor did a good job tonight. He even managed to circle the immediate subject long enough to get some GOP digs in. He even commented on those he placed into power and the good jobs they have done. Guts like nobody else! It would be to our advantage to keep in mind that those in power are sometimes led astray by those unscrupulous individuals whom we trust and empower to help us out. Again, in my opinion, such has been the case with the Governor. He speaks with a clear conscious, a clear and innocent voice and has no fear. Also, his wife Patty is one of the most intelligent and personable people you would ever care to meet and their love and commitment to their children is unwavering. Up close and personal, I have never witnessed anything with either of them that would closely resemble people that would tolerate activities which are being suggested they might be involved. I believe the Governor. It is extremely unfortunate that those around him have betrayed his trust. It may come to pass that his trust in those associates he placed into powerful positions will harm him and his family which I truly believe would be a tagedy. The events being described by Mr. Fitzgerald are indeed worthy of punishment. However, at this time, I do not believe that our Governor is involved to the extent that some comments on this fine blog suggest. The expressions within the comments exibiting absolute glee at the possibility of our Governors impending guilt and imprisonment do not reflect common sense. Common sense would tell us that for an individual to speak with such a clear heart and mind as our Governor did tonight would indicate an individual who has been betrayed by close associates. This is not to say that our great State of Illinois has not and will not suffer; it has and will for years to come. But, if you truly search your heart and mind without putting politics into your thoughts, what you witnessed tonight in the Governor’s press conference was a man unafraid and innocent of personal wrongdoing. I pray for our State, the Governor and especially his family and children in these trying times. I pray that God will please help our great State to overcome this crisis no matter who the “winner” might be and please let politics become a sideline to true caring and admirable actions from all political parties.

Rod is now officially afflicted with the “Ryan Conundrum” - Is it better to:
    A) Admit that you are unfit to be Governor because you are totally and personally corrupt
    B) Admit that you are just too damn dumb to be Governor because 1) You are are such a poor judge of character that you chose to surround yourself with people who are totally corrupt and 2) You are so self absorbed and out of touch that you didn’t realize what they were doing under your nose and actually making you a party to.

The third option would have been seppuku to atone for his disgrace, but I crossed that off the list. THAT’s an honor-based system and he has none.

  135. ABC7’s page on this item speak of a flight to New Jersey in which Rod, Levine, Resko, Cini and Dep. Gov were passengers. The statement says the trip was for Government and Campaign reasons made with a STATE aircraft. Was this same type of issue not used in Rod’s first campaign for Governor when he was claiming the Republicans were using state time, equipmnet and staff for political reasons. I’m sure his campaign paid equal amount for the use of the plane since this is in direct violation of his own ethics laws.

Comment by So. IL. Wednesday, Oct 11, 06 @ 9:26 pm

    I know it’s bad but I couldn’t resist…

Comment by Casey Jones Wednesday, Oct 11, 06 @ 9:29 pm

  137. I also thought Blagojevich’s performance was exceptional.

The weakness in his explanation is that his administration didn’t follow-up attentively to the allegations.

If changing the culture was a priority, Blagojevich should have pursued the allegations more aggressively.

What convinced me of Ryan’s guilt early in the process was that the corruption put money in his campaign fund.

It seems a reasonable inference that Rezko’s prodigous fundraising was connected to the corruption. It’s not quite as open-and-shut a case as Ryan, but I expect Patrick Fitzgerald’s team will eventually nail it down.

But for those that believe Blagojevich will be indicted the ballot translates to:

    Topinka/Birkett
    Whitney/Samuels
    Quinn/player to be named later

For all the faults of Rod Blagojevich and Pat Quinn they are Democrats.

And the Bush presidency has shown Democrats that the Republican vision for our society is different and immoral.

People like you suffer from an acute case of priopism for Cook County people while bashing the heart and soul of Illinois — central Illinois. Bl(go)ow-ya’s press conference was borderline schizophrenic at best. I bet the mob guys he owes favors to will not be happy that he turned on the family. There is categorically no way to deny Rezko’s direct influence and it’s just a matter of weeks, perhaps months, that the feds show up on the 16th floor of the Thompson Center looking for Rod. What a glorious day that will be, perhaps not for you Anon - you may lose your campaign or state job — but for those who deserve justice, it will be like a glass of lemonade on a hot south texas day. By the way, I’m not a state worker, don’t live in Illinois, but I am deeply familiar with the way state government works in Illinois. This is perhaps the saddest period of history in Illinois. The next Governor - whoever is elected - will have a tough time governing in the face of public skepticism. Democrats will vote blindly in droves while thoughtful voters will be forced to choose between evil and not-quite impressive. Rod’s reference to the bible in his news conference was hilarious. Priests are probably lining up for his confession. Don’t be surprised if Catholic Charities receives that big “donation” tomorrow.

  150. Mr. Nyberg, please elaborate, because I sincerely hope I am misinterpreting your meaning. ” For all the faults of Rod Blagojevich and Pat Quinn they are Democrats.” Are you saying that wrongdoing, if proven, is to be ignored simply because of party affiliation? Is “And the Bush presidency has shown Democrats that the Republican vision for our society is different and immoral.” your way of saying that Illinois should condone impropriety in Springfield (at least theoretically in Springfield) because you disagree with national policy coming out of Washington? The road to improvement is for all of us to vote for the right individual, not merely against a particular party!

Comment by Casey Jones Wednesday, Oct 11, 06 @ 10:11 pm

  151. 9:59, yes they can indeed freeze the campaign account. What none of you have discussed (that I saw) is that a detailed job was done in the indictments in laying out the RICO predicates necessary for freezing the account or for further RICO-based indictments.

Think about today’s comment in the press conference referring to a ‘gathering storm’ of an investigation. A gathering storm is slow-moving while it accumulates the elements necessary to unleash its full power. It was far from a semantic coincidence.

  158. What we are not recognizing is that the Feds are so out in front and ahead of all of this, it’s not even funny. I’m not one for legalities but I would doubt that IF Blago wins the election and is indicted, he would have to resign. That would run contrary to the guilty until proven innocent assumption (or wait a minute, that’s innocent until proven guilty). I truly believe that the Feds are aware of the circus of speculation and will continue to hold their cards very close to their vest, as they should. If there are things the Feds have not thought of at this point, some of you are helping them to fill in the blanks (but I think that, too, is highly unlikely). I believe that Blago and his inner circle are or will be toast. I also believe this is going to be so far reaching that its going to make George Ryan look like an amateur. We all are having a lot of fun with this but to believe that we can out think the Feds is really quite silly.

I also believe that Blago had a hint of what came down today because of the hiring of attorneys last week. That was just a way to head off the posse. We will now see a slow down or a complete stop to outside law firms interviewing State employees.

The only way Blago is going to get any sleep tonight and for many future nights is with the help of Jack Daniels. This will consume his every waking thought. However, that won’t stop all of the negative ads that his campaign will put out nor will it stop the lies and distortions. It has worked for him thus far and he’s counting on this story having a short shelf life and the stupidity of Illinois voters.

  159. Patriot, those quality people Rod talked about were the people Papa Tony recommended. Now there’s a bunch with no ethical taint. Let’s see, first Papa Tony has no influence on his administration, but then Rod talks for what seems like a half hour on all the people Papa Tony put in his administration.

Meanwhile, Judy shows up on TV looking like the bus that just took out Papa Tony also ran over her beloved dogs (where was Joe with the leash?) I mean, c’mon Judy, the U.S. Attorney’s office puts the ball on the T, pulls the outfield fences in like it was a charity game and you can’t hit it out of the park? Her TV appearances were so dull they make Eeyore look like a speed freak.
Hmmmm, she runs from reporters in Springfield and sends her surrogate out to do the heavy hitting in Chicago. Yeah, that’s goobernatorial. And to think Rich Whitney can’t get 5 percent.
Ha, Ha, Ha … what a friggin joke this place is.
My one true wish in all of this is that there will be a forthcoming federal indictment in which prosecutors unveil that “Bill” is actually George Ryan who will win an appeal based on mental instability — with Bill’s posts being the body of evidence.
Remember, you heard it here first.
So when’s the next statewide election and is it too soon to start touting our lord and savior Barack Obama for the governor’s office?

  161. Ok, after listening to “Government Official A”s press conference today I think I understand how his administration investigates fraud, ethical violations, and allegations of public influence peddling.

If you are a “personal friend”, “contributor”, or conduct business with his wife, the investigation consists of a personal conversation inquiring as to your activities. Investigation complete. All answers are accepted as true and you resume cashing “birthday checks”.

However, if you are a lowly state employee that just works in a department that takes its marching orders straight from the Governor’s Office, you are thrown to the wolves and a state financed law firm is sent to “investigate”. Seems fair to me.

Thanks for changing business as usual Rod!

  170. It’s getting late night on the blog…

Question: If Blago’s folks are going to donate Rezko’s contributions to charities are they also going to decipher what contributions were made because of Tony’s influence and send those to charity as well? A direct and indirect campaign multiplier donation influence if you will. Just curious. His fund might be drained before the Feds come a callin’.

  171. Mrs. flipper watched the press conference with me, as I wondered aloud why the reporters weren’t pressing harder.

“Well,” she said, “I’m sure it has nothing to do with the millions of dollars in advertising spending their stations take in from the guy. No, that can’t be it.”

    Isn’t she precious?

  172. If Republicans can condone widespread illegal behavior by President Bush who is doing really bad stuff, why should Democrats object to Blagojevich’s people skimming while trying to worthwhile stuff?

It’s a partisan argument. But Democrats are suckers if they don’t see how partisan politics has become under Bush.

  173. “If you once forfeit the confidence of your fellow citizens, you can never regain their respect and esteem. You may fool all of the people some of the time; you can even fool some of the people all the time; but you can’t fool all of the people all of the time.” -A Lincoln

  175. Rod is being cornered into the “I really am an empty suit” defense.

Could Rezko and co. have made this guy what he is as part of some bar bet about how much they could skim from the state government before being indicted?

  176. To Truth: re: “I watched the press conference. If he’s lying Fitz will make him pay. I think we will be hearing from Fitz again, soon.”

There are more to come. Hold onto your seat.

And there you have it! Rod cannot do his research well enough to be cautious about who he appoints to panels and boards. He let Stuart Levine keep his post on the Illinois Health Facilities Planning Board, he put Rezko in charge of shake–whoops!–I meant fundraising (bad bad bad me for that slip of the tongue), and he appointed Sister Claudette to a panel on hate crimes. Yeah, Sister “Was a Top Aide to Minister Farrahkan” Claudette, whose Nation of Islam leader boss once went on a global hate tour to meet with all the dictators of the world.

Now, where was Rod as all this nonsense went on with Rezko? Asleep at the switch, of course. In fact, I think the Topinka campaign should make that quote into a new campaign ad as all of the indictments come down. Voice of announcer: Rod Blagojevich, asleep at the switch. Had enough?

Comment by Angie Thursday, Oct 12, 06 @ 12:25 am

  177. No, the new Topinka slogan should be:

How do we know? His lips are moving.

  178. Can you say (Jailhouse Rock)Elivs is screwed and he knows it. The press conference was laughable. This is only the beginning….What a Joke!

Comment by Cooper Thursday, Oct 12, 06 @ 1:03 am

  179. Mr. Nyberg, your argument transcends simple partisanship. You are literally urging the voters, in the name of partisan payback, to endorse corruption by voting to perpetuate the administration of a Governor everyone expects - and you yourself predict - Patrick Fitzgerald will “eventually nail”.

You rue the actions of the Presidential Administration and acknowledge the flaws of the Gubernatorial Administration, but you urge the voters of Illinois to pass on the chance to reward betrayal of the public trust in the manner it should be rewarded: Ouster! Blagojevich is up for re-election in one month, and change has to start somewhere…

Comment by Casey Jones Thursday, Oct 12, 06 @ 1:22 am

  180. Hey David,
You don’t live in Illinois but you voted for Hynes. Try to get it straight willya? You are worse than Rod.
