Question of the day

Posted in:

St. Louis is not in Illinois, of course, but there are a ton of Cardinals fans here and more than a few who visit this blog.

So… World Series predictions, please.

  1. Detroit in 5. Scott Speizio pulls his groin in batting practice before Game 1 and misses the World Series.

Comment by Fire Ron Guenther Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 9:27 am

  2. can we instead talk about how great the cubs chances for next years world series will be??? I was out of town during the whole lou piniella thing. so i missed any conversation on that. Rich, this needs to be a Cubs-centric blog.

As a resident of Galesburg, we are almost as far from Chicago as St. Louis. So around here you love one of the teams and hate the other. But it is a pretty even distribution of cubs-cards fans. With that said, I do hate the cards and hope the tigers destroy them. I love a good comeback story. And after the Tigers futility a few years ago they deserve it.

  3. Hmmm… I have heard about this thing called baseball.

Comment by Squideshi Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 9:31 am

  4. I hate to say it, but the Tigers will win in six games. I hope the Cards will try to upgrade their pitching, particularly their bullpen, during the off season.

Comment by Anon Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 9:33 am

  5. Go American League! Detroit in 6.

Comment by HANKSTER Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 9:35 am

  6. Tigers in 5 (I feel like I should say more since everyone else feels the need to add a totally useless comment after their predictions).

Comment by Curt Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 9:41 am

  7. I know this is a little off topic, but it is worth a good laugh. Sorry, Cubs fans…

Twenty major events that have occurred since the Chicago Cubs last laid claim to a World Series championship:

    1. Radio was invented; Cubs fans got to hear their team lose.

    2. TV was invented; Cubs fans got to see their team lose.

    3. Baseball added 14 teams; Cubs fans get to see and hear their team lose to more clubs.

    4. George Burns celebrated his 10th, 20th, 30th, 40th, 50th, 60th, 70th, 80th, 90th and 100th birthdays.

    5. Haley’s comet passed Earth twice.

    6. Harry Caray was born….and died. Incredible, but true.

    7. The NBA, NHL and NFL were formed, and Chicago teams won championships in each league.

    8. Man landed on the moon, as have several home runs given up by Cubs pitchers.

    9. Sixteen U.S. presidents were elected.

    10. There were 11 amendments added to the Constitution.

    11. Prohibition was created and repealed.

    12. The Titanic was built, set sail, sank, was discovered and became the subject of major motion pictures, the latest giving Cubs fans hope that something that finishes on the bottom can come out on top.

    13. Wrigley Field was built and becomes the oldest park in the National League.

    14. Flag poles were erected on Wrigley Field roof to hold all of the team’s future World Series pennants. Those flag poles have since rusted and been taken down.

    15. A combination of 40 Summer and Winter Olympics have been held.

    16. Thirteen baseball players have won the Triple Crown; several thanked Cubs pitchers.

    17. Bell-bottoms came in style, went out of style and came back in.

    18. The Chicago White Sox, Cleveland Indians, Boston Red Sox and the Florida Marlins have all won the World Series.

    19. The Cubs played 14,153 regular-season games; they lost the majority of them.

    20. Alaska, Arizona, Hawaii, Oklahoma and New Mexico were added to the Union.

Comment by Anon Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 9:45 am

  8. Detroit in 5. They will be shaky due to a week off, lose the first game, but will come back with their pitching.

Comment by Buck Flagojevich Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 9:47 am

  9. The only people more annoying than Cards fans are Michigan fans.

Comment by Anon Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 9:48 am

  10. It all depends on which Cardinals pitching staff shows up and which Tigers staff shows up. Both teams went into total tailspins at the end of the season - mainly due to inconsistent pitching.

The edge has to go to the Tigers with so much rest during the emotional Mets/Cards battle, but I have to root for the underdogs.

Two good games out of Carpenter, and one each out of Suppan and Weaver. Pujols’ bat wakes up. Cards in 7.

    Ya’ gotta believe!

Comment by Metro East Boy Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 10:01 am

  11. If our pitching holds on, the Cardinals will win in 5 or 6. We won the NLCS, in essence, without Albert Pujols so if he could turn it on along with a hit here and there from Edmonds, Encarnacion, and Rolen, I like our chances. The experience edge has to go to the Cardinals. Besides, we still owe Detroit for ‘68. Go Cards!!

Comment by Sarge Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 10:07 am

  12. Cards will probably lose earlier, but I’ll say they take it in seven.

Last night’s game was so exciting. Rolen’s last at-bat was a true story in determination. After getting robbed of a homerun earlier in the game by the super catch of Indy Chavez, Rolen dug in and refused to lose. His hit set up Yadier Molina’s dinger and game winner. Wow!!! Look out Detroit.

PS to the Cardinal haters - We’re in , you’re not — quit crying!!

PS 2 - Cubs should have hired Girardi. Losin’ with Lou will keep the Cubs blue.

Comment by Cards in Seven Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 10:08 am

  13. Tigers in 4.

Comment by leigh Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 10:11 am

  14. Tigers in 2
Hey Cubs fans, you’re team continued its losing ways this year. Stop cluttering up comments about winners with your incessant loser handwringing about what went wrong and the latest manager brought in to turn things around and who’s to blame and sell the team and what not. On the eve of the World Series no one cares about your little blue losers. Save if for spring training when your hopes will almost assuredly be dashed again. But hey, as of now they’re still in the running for the 2007 Wild Card. If the baseball world revolved around the Cubs, the sport would have been abolished long ago. C’mon. Even Glenn Poshard moved on after a loss. You don’t see Jim Ryan fans filling up Rod and Judy blogs with continued talk of how they should have won or what could have been done differently. Face it, the Cubs lose. You can post when you win. End of story.

Comment by Frank Booth Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 10:15 am

  15. Cards in 7. By the way, do you know what the cubs and cards have in common:

Neither have won a world series in their new stadium, yet.

Comment by Spfld Card Fan Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 10:21 am

  16. I am a very easy going person. I do not use the word “hate” in very many instances. In fact, the only time I use that word is when I am referring to my hatred for Cardinals.

I thought that worst possible scenario would be for the Cardinals to make it to the World Series. After game 5 I changed my attitude about this team. Cardinal Fans always like to stick it to the Cub Fans about making it to the playoffs, winning the division and making it to the World Series.

If the Cub Fans were to have any hope at a witty come back, they would have to root for the team that the Cubs themselves embarrassed during the regular season. This is what I call the high road.

After all, it would be impossible for them to get swept in two consecutive World Series appearances if they did not make it to the game.

Tigers in 4! La Russa fired before the Cardinal convention.

Comment by Stu Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 10:22 am

  17. dETROIT IN 5, St. louis is really not that good, despite they keep destroying the NL Central.

Comment by Wumpus Maximus Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 10:23 am

  18. Lowest TV ratings ever.

Comment by Bluefish Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 10:25 am

  19. Tony LaRussa is the best manager in baseball, but it won’t be enough to top the Tiger’s starting pitching.

    Tigers in 5

And why are people bringing the Cubs into the debate..Stu…you couldn’t find the high road with a map, move on.

Comment by Jim Leland Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 10:27 am

  20. As much as I’d like revenge for 1968 (when Curt Flood lost a fly ball in the sun in game 7 to cost Bob Gibson his seventh straight World Series victory), I have to say Tigers in 5. The Tigers are a better club.

Comment by Lifelong Redbird Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 10:39 am

  21. I don’t think Bluefish is going to be right. The Red Sox-Cardinals TV ratings two years ago were among the highest ever, because of the strong regional followings of the two clubs and their storied histories.

The Tigers aren’t the Red Sox but they are an original MLB team with a lot of history, and the Cardinals always draw.

Comment by Lifelong Redbird Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 10:42 am

  22. Tigers in 4. They deserve it.

Comment by Anon Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 10:46 am

  23. Tigers win it in 4 and Larussa again cries about somebody stealing his signs.

    Comment by Mr . Ethics Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 10:48 am

  24. Detroit in 5, maybe 4. Detroit handled them easily in the regular season, and they destroyed the Yankees and the Athletics in the post season. I think the Cardinals will be lucky if they stay alive long enough to play all three games in St. Louis.

But hey, I have been wrong on every one of my other predictions, so here’s hoping I am wrong on this one, and on my November 7 predictions.

Comment by Jaded Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 10:51 am

  25. Tigers in 7. Pujols has a great series but strikes out in the top of the ninth of the seventh game with men in scoring position and the Cards lose the game 4-3 and the series.
I better change that early morning meeting I have set up for the following Monday morning.

Comment by anon Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 10:52 am

  26. I hear all the Cubs whiners spouting off their “hatred” of the Cardinals. You’ll note that Cardinal fans posting here are realistic that our chances are not good, but no one thought we’d make it this far. If the Cubs had won, the trash talking would be at an all time high. Why can’t Cubs fans be baseball fans? I don’t hate the Cubs and I would root for them if they won the division. I know other Cardinal fans who feel the same way. I don’t know many Cubs fans who would say that. They’re too focused on being bitter and talking about next year. After last night, I’m a believer. It might take 7, but we’ll find a way. Go Cardinals!!

Comment by cardinal class Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 10:53 am

  27. Why don’t you cardinal fans focus on the Tigers, isn’t that who you’re playing? Man, what a pathetic bunch you all are.

As a Cubs fan I am pulling for Detroit, and I came to that decision after reading the posts here.

Cardinal Crass, er, I mean Class…sure you’d pull for the Cubs…that’s easy to say now.

Comment by Dusty Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 10:59 am

  28. Cards in 6. They’ll split with the Tigers in Detroit, take games 4 and 5 in St. Louis, and win game six in Detroit.

Comment by Left Leaner Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 11:16 am

  29. Tigers in 4 –restore the roar, bless you boys, go get `em and all relevant cliches.

Comment by Eric Zorn Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 11:20 am

  30. The long-dreaded New Madrid earthquake will damage the new Busch Stadium forcing the series to relocate to Marion. Thank you governor for helping build a stadium there!

Comment by Fredbyrd Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 11:32 am

  31. Cardinals may get lucky and win one game.

    Tigers in 5

Comment by Outsider Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 11:41 am

  32. Cards in 7. Hey don’t be too hard on the Cubs, anyone can have an off century.

Comment by Anon Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 11:54 am

  33. Tigers in 4. Every Cardinal fan I know doesn’t want the Cubs to do anything ever. Of course I agree with Anon 9:48 and add Penn State fans.

Comment by Central IL Stater Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 12:01 pm

  36. This is a shout out for my buddy in Montana. Tigers take it in 6. Nah, I’ll say they do it in 5 winning it in St. Louis.

Comment by Tessa Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 1:09 pm

  37. Detroit in 6 games! I bleed blue, big Cub fan, but over the years have become so numb to this time of year without the Cubbies I love baseball so much have to find someone to root for…usually against..East or West coast teams!
I hope LOU can help me out this year and let me root for the CUBS in OCT, of 07

    Comment by Big W Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 1:12 pm

  38. Tigers in four, meaning the last time a National League team won a World Series game remains fall of 2003. Bud Selig makes George Steinbrenner fork $200 million over to the National League to achieve parity.

Comment by Boone Logan Square Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 1:40 pm

  39. I want EVERYONE to go back and read my post from 2:45pm Thursday. Cards 3 Mets 1.

I’m on a roll so here we go again.

Fact: The Cards will have Weaver/Carpenter/Suppan available for 6 of the games.

TLR has built a Mike Keenan type of playoff team. A bunch of Grizzled veterans ready for a playoff run. They are patched up, iced up and battle tested.

It hasn’t been easy all year so why any different here.

    Cards in 7.

    Comment by BIG R.PH Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 2:10 pm

  40. This will be a classic Fall Classic. With two storied franchises, two storied managers and perhaps the best player to have ever played.

    Cards in 7.

    Metamora (Redbirds) 24-SHG 16

Comment by Redbird Fan Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 2:53 pm

  41. Cards in 7. I agree with Big R Ph. It hasn’t been easy so why should the rest of the year be any different.

P.S. Don’t you guys ever get tired of saying “next year”?

Comment by Country Girl Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 3:41 pm

  42. My head says Tigers in five,
My gut says Cards in Five,

    I’m going with my gut.

Comment by Garp Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 3:43 pm

  43. Tigers in 4.

    National league bites.

Comment by Mike Williams Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 5:16 pm

  44. I just heard that Fitzgerald is investigating several Detroit Tigers players - the critical ones! And indictments may be pending. By the way Fitz is a Cardinal fan! When he failed to make the team a couple decades ago he went into law and the rest is history, like the Tigers, Ryan, Blago, Rezko et al, and the Cu…. nawwww! CARDS in 5 !!

    Comment by Citizen A Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 5:19 pm

  45. Cards in 6.

Cubs in Never — it’s not The Goat, it’s the Tribune Company. Who else would think that the way forward was through Lou Pinella? Talk about a job no one in their right mind wanted.

Comment by Yellow Dog Democrat Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 6:11 pm

  46. God- I find myself agreeing with the Yellow dog- and that kills me when that happens. (Though in fairness, he is coming to the center/right…more that myself moving left).

If I were betting, I probably wouldn’t bet the house payment on either the Cards or JBT. However, they both could win with just a little bit of luck, and maximum effort from everyone!!

Comment by Roy Slade Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 11:20 pm

  47. Bank on it!
