Today’s quotable

Even some Democrats seemed exasperated by the lack of progress on a state budget. Rep. Jaime Andrade, a Chicago Democrat, predicted that voters may end up punishing lawmakers.

“A lot of incumbents can be beat by Mickey Mouse because the people are just very frustrated out there,” he said.

  1. But, the reality is, very few incumbents are sweating it.

  2. Interesting. Andrade’s opponent is actually an impressive candidate who has won endorsements from both Chicago papers. Setting expectations, perhaps?

  3. I think most consultants would say Minnie Mouse would be a better candidate. You know, more appeal to women voters and all that.

There is a sort of “throw the bums” out mentality out there, but remember, the impasse ends when the tax rate goes up. That’s going to be like adding gasoline to the electoral fire.

We’re still in the preliminaries. The finals will not be pretty.

  4. The “problem” with voters expressing their exasperation at the poll booth is that the typical voter doesn’t realize that there is a proxy war going on, with the Governor and Speaker waging a war for the future based on how the other guy’s candidates fare at the polls. Voters don’t realize that they are supposed to pick a Democrat or Republican (or a certain candidate in certain primary races) in order to “vote” for Speaker Madigan to win or pick a Republican to “vote” for Rauner to win.

  5. Too bad Micky Mouse is smart enough to not run. His intelligence and optimisium is sorely needed in both chambers.

  6. Mickey Mouse is too smart to run for office

  7. Ugh. Can we get an Oscar pic please to cheer us all up?

  8. THey can’t be beat by Mickey Mouse because Mickey Mouse is not on the ballot. If there were primary opponents, they may have a worry. But there aren’t many opponents.

  9. Thanks to Trump’s political branding - the voters have become very frustrated, & they don’t care if the person they elect can actually do the job or not.

  10. @Scoopey
Apparently you can pick a dem in some races and Rauner still wins.

  11. He is correct. Too bad the DNC doesn’t have a clue and coronated Hillary as D nominee. She is going to lose badly on in the general.

  12. I just saw Mickey, he says his ears are ringing…and that’s a lot of ringing.

  13. The “throw out the bums!” mindset is how we got Rauner.

Comment by CharlieKratos Friday, Mar 4, 16 @ 1:55 pm

  14. Hillary’s best day is behind her. Sanders is still in the race. I do wish they’d stop including super delegates in the delegate totals though. It’s misleading and designed to give Sanders supporters a false sense of defeat.

Comment by CharlieKratos Friday, Mar 4, 16 @ 1:58 pm

  15. ==a false sense of defeat===

    lol

  16. Ballot access in Illinois is substantially more difficult that it was a decade or so ago. Incumbents without challengers have little too fear.

First time candidates ought to go out and gather plenty of signatures and prepare for electoral board hearings to defend their petitions.

  17. Andrade is worried. He’s been flooding his district with mailers claiming to link harish to Rauner.

  18. Lots of tin ears sitting in Springfield and Washington, DC. Rep. Andrade seems to have caught on to this. Where it all goes is anyone’s guess.

  19. “I don’t know any — honestly, I don’t know Mickey Mouse. I don’t believe I have ever met him. I’m pretty sure I didn’t meet him. And I just don’t know anything about him.”

  20. “A lot of incumbents can be beat by Mickey Mouse because he has fewer fingers in the cookie jar,” he said.

    Fixed it.

  21. And should be! If Mickey Mouse is the only one that will stand up and do something outside of trying to protect his seat then maybe he should be in Springfield. Can Mickey count? Can he add? Then he will be better than most of them.

Comment by Mickey Mouse Friday, Mar 4, 16 @ 2:53 pm

  22. If large numbers of people are even paying attention, wouldn’t we see a big increase in voter turnout.

Lots of folks don’t even know who their legislators are, or they get them mixed up. Trying asking around at the next social occasion you attend. Who is your rep?

    We’ll see.

Comment by Cassandra Friday, Mar 4, 16 @ 2:59 pm

  23. No snark meant here. Is Andrade’s opponent a Rauner plant? Besides McCann’s opponent, who are the challengers that are getting support by Rauner or one of the PAC’s he controls? TIA!
