    Comment by 360 Degree TurnAround Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 1:59 pm

  3. Didn’t Rauner veto the higher ed budget that the GA passed?

    Comment by Joe M Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 2:01 pm

  4. Oh no! This is serious, Governor. What are his demands? Has he done this before? I’ll have to Google, but does this happen all the time? What changed in 2015 that made it thus? So many questions. This is urgent. We must do something. We must find the chief executive of the state and inform him of this.

Comment by LizPhairTax Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 2:04 pm

  5. huh?

he is the one who vetoed the bill, and the budget

  8. If the governor is as impotent as he would have us believe, he should resign. If the governor isn’t impotent, he should act.

  9. If only our poor governor could do something for Eastern, maybe hold a bake sale, I’m not sure what he could do? /s

Comment by AC Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 2:13 pm

  10. –If the governor is as impotent as he would have us believe, he should resign. If the governor isn’t impotent, he should act.–

But pretending that he is not doing what he absolutely wants to be doing and is doing is working for him among some of the people all of the time.

  11. A comment aimed at low information voters.

Comment by illinoised Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 2:15 pm

  12. HBO - “Dad’s Home State” - Season 2, Episode 20

Bruce tells college students to hang in there while wearing a “Dartmouth Dad” sweatshirt. Diana prepares for her own Spring Break, Diana’s new State Employee suggest another foreign trip. Lance tweets pictures of Ken Dunkin to Rep. Lang, “ck” gets the lists of mayors and village presidents too late for a Goldberg letter. Comedy, 63 minutes.

Comment by Oswego Willy Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 2:16 pm

  13. ===I’m not sure what he could do===

He’s powerless, like the rest of us. If only Illinois had an elected position with executive power, to counter-balance the iron grip of Mike Madigan’s legislative branch, then maybe Rauner wouldn’t be as weak, pathetic and powerless as he is pretending to be with stunts like this.

    Comment by 47th Ward Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 2:18 pm

  14. Shimkus doesn’t need Rauner’s endorsement. He’s taking one for the team by “allowing” Rauner’s endorsement. Rauner’s favorables are in the tank down there, and he needs an ally.

Comment by out of touch Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 2:19 pm

  15. @FundEIU - Stadium Grill, Rauner & Shimkus told students they’ll be removed if they are protesters. Way to hear your constituents’ concerns #FundEIU

  16. Talk about beating a dead horse.

How many people in the general Illinois population know who Speaker of the Illinois General Assembly is as opposed to the Governor?? As the saying goes, “the buck stops here.”

Comment by The Muse Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 2:21 pm

  17. Shimkus on Rauner’s agenda: “I also believed in term limits, until I didn’t. You know, a funny thing happened when I exhausted my self-prescribed term limit: I realized that I was still the best man for the job. Sorry for the fib, voters”.

  20. What a blatent fabrication.

    Charleston, EIU,

Reggie Phillips, when you needed him most, where was he? Not with Charleston, not with EIU, and when he “supports” EIU or Charleston without getting enough votes one last time… it’s too late, he let you down yet again.

“Term limits are important, beginning in 2028.” Fake Governor Rauner

Comment by Beaner Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 2:28 pm

  23. And since he’s parading around with Shimkus today, where has our congressman been on the budget issue? He’s supposed to be a leader, right?

  24. Bruce Rauner is a failure.

Comment by Saluki Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 2:30 pm

  25. I’ve heard it was just a one way event in which people listened to speeches. Apparently the vetoes that caused this whole train wreck just dropped out of the sky like a tornado. No one knows where they came from.

Comment by Chucktownian Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 2:32 pm

  26. Rauner is killing EIU because of Jim Edgar, he and his team, cant swallow that a Governor from the 90″s has an approval rating in the 70’s and their guy cant even get over 50 percent approvals..

It’s evolving into a Mockumentary, but to the Rauners and their Crew, they’ll keep filming as long as we label it a comedy. The production meetings leave us all scratching our heads.

  30. No matter how good you are, how smart you are, how rich you are- it can’t always, no matter what, be someone else’s fault.

  36. And next we have Kyle Mac the magnificent dancing Chicago machine on our program. He will dance while Reggie sings “Beautiful Loser”.

Comment by nadia Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 3:01 pm

  37. Yeah I heard he chickened out and avoided the EIU crowd — sort of like he avoids meeting with anyone who doesn’t tell him what he wants to hear.

    Worst. Governor. Ever.

And I say that in a state that has had more than its fair share of bad governors.

Comment by Chucktownian Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 3:05 pm

  38. McCarter apparently just asked Rauner whether he thought he was a “Chicago politician” as the Shimkus attack ads claim.

According to McCarter’s Twitter the response was a “chuckle” and “No I don’t.”

  42. Did he actually call it “EIU”?

I didn’t know anyone in the whole state called it anything but “Eastern.”

Shows how little time he has actually spent discussing their financial problems with anyone.

PS: ck, for future reference for upcoming school closings:

    “Carbondale”
    “SIU-E”
    “Western”
    “Northern”
    “ISU”
    “Chicago State”
    “Northeastern”

Comment by Juvenal Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 3:13 pm

  43. How is Rauner anything but a “Chicago politician?”

Now he’s even lying about where he’s from.

This is comically bad, like the quality of Rauner’s job as governor.

Comment by Chucktownian Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 3:17 pm

  44. He simply does not care about students or the universities or the poor or the disabled. He only cares about busting unions and ensuring more money flows to the 1%. That is why I cannot understand the support he gets from some middle to lower income GOP voters in this area. He’s going to hurt them as well and they love him for it.

  45. Next up: “Madigan is forcing me to veto higher education funding in this state!”

  46. Shameless - WIU and EIU were part of the plan from day one.

Comment by Skeptical Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 3:25 pm

  47. Odd that Madigan has been in power for years but it wasn’t until Bruce Rauner became governor that suddenly EIU became a hostage. I’m guessing that points the finger directly at Rauner, no matter how much he’s trying to dodge responsibility.

    Swell. Calling cthomas.

    Comment by sal-says Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 4:28 pm

  54. –But what is his end game?–

Fewer university programs and universities serving fewer students and fewer social services programs and providers helping fewer people in need and funded at a much lower baseline than before the governor took office.

Again, the “necessary shakeout,” as Sen. Radogno spoke of to the SJR.

The “hostage” situations are a ruse to disguise premeditated hits on these state functions.

The governor’s public posture — that it’s somehow reasonable to abandon higher education and renege on state contracts for social services unless collective bargaining is done away would seem preposterous.

But he’s getting away with it.

  59. Gov. Droppi G knows what he’s doing. This is all part of his plan: the systematic destruction of public higher education. He doesn’t like it, so he’s starving it to death. He thinks private education works better and only wants those who can afford it to be educated. Him, and his kind, do not want everyone to be educated enough to actually critically exam who/what they’re voting for. The dumber the population, the easier they are to control. He know’s exactly what he’s doing.

    1. A budget is leverage.
    2. I will never lose control of events no matter the level of chaos that the lack of a budget produces.
    3. Voters will blame MJM for everything if his approval is still slightly worse than mine.
    4. Politics is not an art or skill.
