* An Eastern Illinois University student attempted to ask a question of Gov. Bruce Rauner yesterday, but didn’t manage to blurt it out fast enough and the governor made a skillful escape

Check out this video I took of Governor Rauner refusing to answer an EIU student's question! #FundEIU #FundOurSchools

Perhaps y’all could give some advice to this young man.

  6. It was a lot easier to run out and duck questions before the internet. Bet this baby is viral on all student websites before like 20 minutes after it was posted.

  7. Find a group of friends and turn it into a protest and everyone in unison yell out the question. Especially if it can become a soundbite. lol

  9. Trump?

If you want a question answered, be willing to ask it when it’s most uncomfortable for those questioned.

There’s a reason advance staff look for exits early.

“Passive-Aggressive” is just passive when confronting pols with a question.

Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Mar 8, 16 @ 9:27 am

  10. As OW says “vote accordingly”. Then utilize social media to get every single student to “vote accordingly” as well. To date the youth vote has been very unreliable. They get all excited and add energy then do not vote. That’s on students to change. “Vote Accordingly”

Okay now that my adult lecture is over.

GO OUT THERE AND GET SOME!!!!!!

    RIP THEM A NEW ONE!!!!

  11. I don’t know why people are surprised that the EIU student got ignored. Seems like the governor has been doing this for over a year to all people in Illinois except his wealthy buddies.

Comment by Willy Tuesday, Mar 8, 16 @ 9:29 am

  12. My advice to the student is to be as rude and forceful as the person you want to question.

  16. Be just as rude as the person you’re trying to question. Stand in his way, interrupt others, shout your question and keep repeating it.

When your subject shows you respect, however, respond in kind.

  17. Yell “Rahm Emanuel” repeatedly.

Comment by Juice Tuesday, Mar 8, 16 @ 9:34 am

  18. “Is that Ken Griffin? Governor, now that I have your attention….”

To be generous, perhaps the governor thought the young man was a process server from his business days.

Big Jim never ducked a question in his life, from anyone, anywhere.

  20. You need to repeat yourself and not let contrasting opinions get a word in edge wise as some here do, kid.
Just flood the gov with comments, and don’t let anyone else talk. The the gov has to answer you, because you are the only voice he can hear.

Comment by Anonymous Tuesday, Mar 8, 16 @ 9:36 am

  21. Clearly the student needs to become a multi-millionaire business man before having the audacity to ask Rauner a question. Up until that happens, he is persona non grata in Rauner’s eyes.

Comment by Ole' Nelson Tuesday, Mar 8, 16 @ 9:36 am

  22. Ask the question! Don’t ask to ask a question.

While he could have approached things differently, the student would have just received the Rauner pablum.

Comment by Norseman Tuesday, Mar 8, 16 @ 9:38 am

  23. Vote accordingly young man because Reggie Phillips wasn’t there for you.

Comment by XDNR Tuesday, Mar 8, 16 @ 9:40 am

  24. Lock the door so 1.4% can’t get out.

Comment by Huh? Tuesday, Mar 8, 16 @ 9:41 am

  25. My advice? Keep sharing the sound bite on Facebook — it’s good enough to go viral. But the kids who took it don’t need advice from anyone my age on how to use social media.

Comment by olddog Tuesday, Mar 8, 16 @ 9:42 am

  26. Go volunteer at WEIU TV or the Daily Eastern News. They’ll teach you how to get a well phrased question out there.
Then go to Marty’s. If Rauner keeps this up, you may just want to go straight to Marty’s.

Comment by EIU Alumni Tuesday, Mar 8, 16 @ 9:42 am

  27. That’s what Ken Dunkin can expect from Rauner after he’s defeated in next week’s primary.

Comment by Wensicia Tuesday, Mar 8, 16 @ 9:43 am

  28. Son, when you speak to an elite GOP billionaire, you must represent yourself as one worthy of his attention, in order to get his attention.

In my house, we call this “playing the game.”

To you this means, even though this is 2016, you must get a haircut and wear polyester. If you are accompanied by a female friend, she must wear a pearl necklace, and a skirt with pantyhose.

Unfortunately, your long hair and ball cap are not considered uniform of the day for addressing the Governor, thus you were summarily dismissed.

Of course, we all know the clothes do not make the man, but Mr Carhartt is “in to” that kind of thing.

  31. “Good to see ya.” Oh crap, the kid wants to ask a question. Everybody, eyes left! Keep moving. Dont panic. If he follows, block him out. No, dont tase him. Didnt you see the camera?

Campaigns have lots of manufactured events. But how weak is it for rauner to “endorse” shimkus? Why not appear w one of his paid-for surrogates? Dunkin–oops, hes toast, chgo media, gov vs pres endoesements? Not good. Bryce?–unions are charged up enuf, lets not make it any more about rauner than it already is.

Probably the best the schdulers can do w rauner, days before the election, is a charity harley run. Whats madigan doing?

Comment by Jack Stephens Tuesday, Mar 8, 16 @ 9:58 am

  34. The student shouldn’t feel bad - Rauner has also been dodging questions from even veteran reporters throughout most of his term.

    Comment by Joe M Tuesday, Mar 8, 16 @ 10:12 am

  35. Time for being polite is over. Don’t touch, but get in this guy’s grill any time he’s in public. He does not care about you. Make him. Again, no touching.

Comment by LizPhairTax Tuesday, Mar 8, 16 @ 10:18 am

  36. At the very beginning of the clip, was that a look of derision on the face of Rauner and the other two guys, like ‘Ewww, who let this thing in here?’

Comment by Independent retired lawyer, journalist Tuesday, Mar 8, 16 @ 10:24 am

  37. Yes, do be sure to “vote accordingly!” We all know that this college student who is probably registered to vote in a suburban district and has a profile picture with Bernie Sanders is your standard Republican primary voter. I bet they’re really gonna rip Reggie a new one.

Comment by Jack Kemp Tuesday, Mar 8, 16 @ 10:24 am

  38. 37 comments all blaming Rauner for the budget impasse without a single criticism of any of the leaders of the GA. I guess everyone has given up on compromise

Comment by Lucky Pierre Tuesday, Mar 8, 16 @ 10:29 am

  39. Pierre, we’ve been around awhile and have actually seen what has happened. Rauner isn’t interested in a budget.

Comment by Keyrock Tuesday, Mar 8, 16 @ 10:33 am

  40. - Lucky Pierre -

Do any GA members have the power to veto? When you figure that out, get back to us.

    - Jack Kemp -

If Eastern closes its doors for good, the students will move on, but Charleston may never recover.

“Vote Accordingly”, Charleston, Illinois. Don’t just count on the students to save your City, as Reggie Phillips refuses to save you, Charleston now must save itself.

Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Mar 8, 16 @ 10:37 am

  41. The exact same thing happened to me when Rauner finished his speech at my job site.

Comment by Omega Man Tuesday, Mar 8, 16 @ 10:43 am

  42. Any one GA member can “veto” a party line budget override attempt, as we learned from Dunkin.
And Madigan can pass a budget any time he wants, as he has demonstrated. He does not even need all his members on board.
None of it gets us anywhere without compromise by all.

Comment by Anonymous Tuesday, Mar 8, 16 @ 11:04 am

  43. “37 comments all blaming Rauner for the budget impasse…”

“The Governor shall prepare and submit to the General Assembly, at a time prescribed by law, a State budget for the ensuing fiscal year.” — Constitution of the State of Illinois. Art. VIII, Sec. 2(a)

And, in case you’ve forgotten, Mr. Rauner is “the Governor” to whom the Constitution is referring.

  44. ===Any one GA member can “veto” a party line budget override attempt, as we learned from Dunkin.===

How’s that working for Dunkin? How’s that working for his constituents? How’s that working for CSU?

“Hang in there” is not a political policy.

===And Madigan can pass a budget any time he wants, as he has demonstrated. He does not even need all his members on board.===

Madigan can’t override a veto. Didn’t yih just point out Dunkin?

Do you speak in circles purposely, or are you ignorant to your irony?

  45. ===Do you speak in circles purposely, or are you ignorant to your irony? ===

    Exactly.

Either stop this nonsense or find another place to comment.

Comment by Rich Miller Tuesday, Mar 8, 16 @ 11:18 am

  46. Madigan cannot override a veto or pass a budget without compromise and so far there has been none. For that you Blame Rauner but let the rest of Sprinfield off the hook. Seems about right

Comment by Lucky Pierre Tuesday, Mar 8, 16 @ 11:18 am

  47. Advice?

Young man, if you even vote, you are having an impact that surpasses that of most your elders. If you’re up on the issues, so much the better. You’d be surprised at the number of “adults” that wouldn’t be able to explain the difference between a libertarian and a communist. Only a small minority of registered voters actually vote, so that makes your vote all the more significant and valuable.

Bring plenty of your registered-voter buds with you to the polling place.

Get informed about, and involved with, the political process. You’ll be more informed, and have a weightier impact, than most other folks of voting age.

  50. There will plenty of blame to go around if EIU,NIU, SIUE, WIU et al close up. The schools will lose accreditation and communities will not recover for years if the doors shut. Time to actually do that budgeting thing that you all were sent to springpatch to do.

  51. ===There will plenty of blame to go around if EIU,NIU, SIUE, WIU et al close up.===

    Nope. Not even close.

    “On Gov. Rauner’s watch… ”

    Governors own.

Any university closes its doors, that’s a failure on a governor. Period.

Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Mar 8, 16 @ 12:13 pm

  52. Everyone should vote, but educate yourself about who is financing the candidate before you vote.

Comment by Mama Tuesday, Mar 8, 16 @ 12:15 pm

  53. I agree this is a huge crisis and demands all hands on deck. If Governor Rauner wanted to compromise he would have to wait until April 4th

Comment by Lucky Pierre Tuesday, Mar 8, 16 @ 12:18 pm

  54. As I pointed out yesterday what I saw, that’s the elderly man in the yellow jacket who chased the kid who asked the question.

Comment by LGHB Tuesday, Mar 8, 16 @ 12:18 pm

  55. –There will plenty of blame to go around if EIU,NIU, SIUE, WIU et al close up.–

Who chose to vote against higher ed approps?

Who chose to veto higher ed approps., while signing K-12 approps and supporting court fights to pay state employees without approps?

Who was the governor who vetoed higher ed approps, making it the first time in more than 150 years that higher ed will receive no state funding?

You can’t be a victim of your own actions.

  57. What was the Governor hoping to accomplish by visiting EIU? All he did was put on a show of arrogance. Or, cluelessness. Or, both.

Comment by Wading in... Tuesday, Mar 8, 16 @ 12:36 pm

  58. @Wading in - the visit was not at EIU, but 10 miles west of there at a local restaurant, whose management complied with instructions from Rauner’s staff to make sure that there were “only supporters” in the room. I agree, the Governor comes off looking arrogant and clueless. What did he think he would find in a community which is already suffering considerably because of the lack of a budget?

Comment by Morningstar Tuesday, Mar 8, 16 @ 1:29 pm

  59. Well he didn’t have the guts to go to Charleston or EIU. He went to Mattoon. I suspect the Stadium Grill’s business is about to drop. I’ll never go there again and many in Charleston feel the same. Stand with the governor and you have to face the consequences.
