Madigan wants $227 million more for MAP grants

Posted in:

* Just minutes before the leaders are set to meet for only the second time this year, House Speaker Michael Madigan filed a new amendment to a shell appropriations bill

The sum of $227,274,400, or so much thereof as may be necessary, is appropriated to the Illinois Student Assistance Commission from the General Revenue Fund for grant awards to students eligible for the Monetary Award Program, as provided by law, and for agency administrative and operational costs not to exceed 2 percent of the total appropriation in this Section.

Cue the “It has no real funding source and is therefore a sham” press release from the governor’s office in 3… 2…

  1. Why stop at $227 mill? Why not make it a nice, round $500 mill?

Seeing as the General Revenue Fund has apparently become an infinitely replenishing money tree…

  2. fund it with a 90% income tax on income over $50million and Ken Griffin can pay for it. /s

    $1.7B - 50m = 1.65B
    $1.65B x .9 = $1.485B
See. There is even a little left over.

  3. This is what I was getting at in the other thread. Does anyone know if the budgeteers’ “Framework” includes additional funding for FY16 or is it only FY17?

  4. Maybe they can play that Dire Straights song about money at the meeting today

  5. Isn’t the point that the franework is inadequate? That it does not fund proorities?

The problem is that neither side will go first. Repiblicans won’t increase revenue wuthout getting something and Democrats won’t cut spending without getting something. And so the deficit came.

  6. LP, why not Bryan Adams’ “Cuts like a Knife?”

Now it cuts like a knife
    But it feels so right

At some point, your BFF has to cut spending if he isn’t going to raise taxes. Maybe he can start today?

  7. This would be a great place to eliminate spending.

  8. It is important to not re-elect a Rep that plays video games on the house floor during important debates. FIRE “Candy Crush Cloonen”!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. Restoring the MAP grants would help the state universities and community colleges. Even with the recent stopgap funding, they are still on a starvation death march.

  10. Maybe he can throw in some money for a presidential library or two while he is at it. /s

    Getting rid of MAP grants?

It’s getting nearly impossible to keep track of all of the ridiculous things you say when you pop out of your mole hole.
