Rep. Welter Seeking Input from District
MORRIS—State Representative David Welter (R-Morris) is seeking members for his new legislative advisory committees.
Welter will be hosting regular meetings that will allow these advisory boards to provide input he can use when presenting and voting on legislation in Springfield.
“Advisory boards are key to representing our district well,” said Welter. “This provides opportunity for members of the community to not only bring in ideas, which I always welcome, but it allows for a sounding board when discussing legislation that is presented by other parts of the state. I want to know how this will impact our community so I can represent our district well.”
The first round of advisory communities will include Education, Agriculture, First Responders and Disability Advocates.
Welter (R-Morris) was recently appointed to replace GOP Rep. John Anthony.

The three rules I was taught during my first week in Springfield:
)
1) Assume everyone is wearing a wire.
2) Leave staff alone. (That’s the filter-friendly version
3) Friends aren’t necessarily the ones with the best jokes or pick-up the check at dinner. Friends are the ones who bring you soup when you’re sick. Stick with your friends.

Decide who you are going to listen to, the advisory boards or 1.4%?
Are you looking for a wide range of political views or the narrow raunerite dogma?
Are you going to vote for the good of your district or be a raunerite mushroom? BTW - voting the raunerite agenda is not good for your district.

I guess in this different 2016 Illinois political world, I’d add this…
It’s ok to be partisan, it’s even ok to to stand partisanly on issues.
Just don’t be a caricature of something you’re not or disavow your past and who you are to BE a partisan in this current climate.
If you’re true to yourself, your past, your core, and even your constituents and district in your partisanship, you’ll make more of a statement about yourself than any partisan boilerplate you read or sign your name to in this current climate.
My hope is a year from now… your own shaping of this job will help others and Illinois move on from “here” and get to a better place.

My advice: Don’t take money from strange men in cowboy outfits, motorcycle jackets, or Carharts. You will likely be asked to do something painful.

Truth is an area, seldom a point.
Everyone lives in their own reality, try to understand the realities of others.
Every now and then, try to imagine what your District and supporters will look like in 5 years, 10 years and what they will believe and want then. Try to get ahead of them.

If you’re going to have an advisory board you should keep in mind that everything related to that advisory board is subject to FOIA — even personal emails.

Advice to the young legislator: Assume you know less than everyone else in the room until you’re at least 30.

1. presume everyone’s good intentions until proven wrong.
2. no one cares what you say on the floor back home (especially as a freshman) so listen twice as much (at least)as you speak (two ears, one mouth)
3. never embarrass a colleague unless you give them a heads up in advance and can’t avoid it.
4. never EVER go back on your word, so don’t commit lightly.
5. process/logistical information is valuable to the professional advocacy class (lobbyist) and you can (and should) build good will by sharing it without violating confidences. They have lives too and helping them avoid waiting around to hear that nothing else important is going to happen will earn a friend for life at no cost to you.
6. the golden rule, this is a highly stressful process and only the people around here really “get” the life you lead, so treat everyone the way you’d want to be treated, until they become such a miserable, untrustworthy SOB that you have to vote them off of the island.
That ought to guarantee success.

(1) Take some constituents on an exploratory visit to legal cannabis states. Take time to visit the Departments of Revenue in those states, too.
(2) Shut down that radioactive garbage can endangering present and future Illinoisans.
