Oppo dump!

* If you want to see what stuff Republican Comptroller Leslie Munger might use to attack her Democratic opponent Susana Mendoza, click here. It’s a veritable cornucopia of OR. And it doesn’t even include the “She says Mike Madigan is her mentor” hit.

…Adding… A new one is here.

  1. Here comes the multi-million dollar barrage that Mendoza could be swamped with before October 15th.

This is Munger’s race to lose. Munger is the favorite.

I’m just surprised they are waiting until Labor Day passes before “going up” and knocking down Mendoza.

  2. Hands down, the most visually painful thing I’ve seen in months. It looks like a ransom note.

    Content-wise? Meh.

When Munger learns how to multiply, I’ll start to listen.

Comment by Bobby Catalpa Friday, Sep 2, 16 @ 10:42 am

  3. OK, but what is 7 x 8?

Comment by illini Friday, Sep 2, 16 @ 10:45 am

  4. Munger is the “favorite”? Have you looked at turnout in Illinois in presidential election years, Willy?

Give me a break. The Democrats knew exactly what they were doing when they shortened the term to 2 years.

Meanwhile, Mendoza will multiply exactly how Madigan tells her to.

Comment by Indochine Friday, Sep 2, 16 @ 10:47 am

  5. Terrible visuals/graphics. And, ironically, the tweet at that #whatsthedeal hashtag related to the race is a tweet about Mendoza’s math ad.

But the content is all there for a very effective hit.

Comment by JoeMaddon Friday, Sep 2, 16 @ 10:48 am

  6. The $500 million also included state money and a Chicago real estate tax, not just sales tax. The money was also shared with suburban Metra and Pace too.

Comment by Not It Friday, Sep 2, 16 @ 10:50 am

  7. - Indochine -

    Yep. I have.

I also know in the next 60-odd days left, Rauner can’t afford Munger losing and I am already anticipating a high 7-figure surge in spending in the race for Munger to… bury… Mendoza.

I am still shocked weeks and weeks ago Munger didn’t go up, statewide or regionally, with a positive ad, to reintroduce herself.

As Munger herself said. She didn’t run for Comptroller.

Munger is the favorite. Today. Right now.

This drop is just a beginning of the swamping.

  8. == Hands down, the most visually painful thing I’ve seen in months. It looks like a ransom note. ==

Holy cow, you guys weren’t kidding. Also, it’s just one giant jpg. Is this a 1997 geocities page?

Comment by The Captain Friday, Sep 2, 16 @ 10:55 am

  9. People, ignore the visuals. Focus on the content.

    Thanks.

Comment by Rich Miller Friday, Sep 2, 16 @ 10:59 am

  10. Content is good for an election campaign ad, but c’mon Munger knows that a future tax increase is inevitable. So, might as well elect someone whose already done it? Eh?

Comment by Anonymous Friday, Sep 2, 16 @ 11:21 am

  11. Meh. Need more spooky MJM (cowbell!)

Odd to highlight tax increases when one is right around the corner.

Comment by Henry Francis Friday, Sep 2, 16 @ 11:39 am

  12. Munger is not the favorite, that’s just silly.

To the content — not the visuals — it’s good stuff. How it is rolled out will matter though because Madigan and the D’s will hit Munger about her multiplication tables and will try to attach her to Rauner … and Trump.

In other words, substance may have little to do with who wins. #hardlydeftIadmit

Comment by Deft Wing Friday, Sep 2, 16 @ 11:43 am

  13. I am confused on the double dipping reference. She was drawing two salaries simultaneously? I thought the positions were consecutive.

Comment by burbanite Friday, Sep 2, 16 @ 11:44 am

  14. They’ve got some big shells to lob in their barrage. Even after everybody’s shell shocked, my guess is neither will have enough name recognition to cause significant ticket splitting.

It still comes down to two factors: Turnout for the top of the ticket, and predisposition against Rauner or against Madigan.

Comment by walker Friday, Sep 2, 16 @ 11:45 am

  15. - Deft Wing -

Keep ignoring the monies that will swamp Mendoza.

Rauner needs Munger to win. All the stops are waiting to be pulled

===It still comes down to two factors: Turnout for the top of the ticket, and predisposition against Rauner or against Madigan.===

    Agreed, “but..”

… denying the monetary advantages Munger will have is really a mistake.

    Today.

Comment by Oswego Willy Friday, Sep 2, 16 @ 11:51 am

  16. I think her comments in the Tribune debate that all of the budgets she voted on as a State Rep were balanced is far more damaging.

Eventually after being challenged she conceded they were balanced except for the pension funding which is about 30 percent of the current budget.

Comment by Lucky Pierre Friday, Sep 2, 16 @ 11:52 am

  17. Link doesn’t work for me. Are they trying to fix the visuals?

Comment by South of Sherman Friday, Sep 2, 16 @ 11:56 am

  18. Very “meh” content wise. At the end of the day, none of that is shocking or will stand out to most presidential election year voters. That’ll probably blend in with the rest of political ads.

Comment by The Muse Friday, Sep 2, 16 @ 12:00 pm

  19. **Keep ignoring the monies that will swamp Mendoza.**

Why is Rauner spending millions already on house/senate races, but nothing on the Comptroller race?

I mean, I keep assuming the same thing as you, that Munger will have a big money advantage. But we haven’t seen it yet, even though we’ve seen a ton of early spending everywhere else. If Rauner Inc is willing to spend what it takes, why aren’t they spending to define Mendoza right now?

Comment by JoeMaddon Friday, Sep 2, 16 @ 12:01 pm

  20. To the content, I hope for Team Munger’s sake that the rest of the goodies on the list are more straight-up than this last one.

“Allowed Governor Blagojevich to borrow $10 Billion against the Pension System”

To paraphrase noted sociologist Larry the Cable Guy, I don’t care where you’re from, that’s wrong right there.

The State passed legislation in 2003 which allowed the sale of $10 billion in Pension Obligation Bonds, with the proceeds (well, most of them, but that’s another story) going to the State pension systems to shore up their funded status. The State was and is the sole guarantor of these bonds; no pension assets were pledged as collateral or any guarantee offered.

Amateur level mistake, but that’s just my opinion.

Comment by Arthur Andersen Friday, Sep 2, 16 @ 12:05 pm

  21. Wait, is Mendoza retired and collecting a GA pension right now? If she is, that is gross.

Comment by Not It Friday, Sep 2, 16 @ 12:10 pm

  22. @Not it. Why is it gross? Please explain your statement.

Comment by Yiddishcowboy Friday, Sep 2, 16 @ 12:17 pm

  23. Remember the Raunerite Banking Flow Chart:

    Monies magically get transferred.

I just surprised it’s taking this long.

Raunerites are not going to transfer cash until it’s time to spend, probably after this weekend.

They just rolled out this stuff…

Comment by Oswego Willy Friday, Sep 2, 16 @ 12:21 pm

  24. With all due respect to Mr/Ms OW: BigBrain has waited way too long to bailout the Wingman. The math quiz will be the signature item and Munger is toast.
BigBrain too busy tryin’ to grab 1 seat from HouseDs to claim he crushed the veto proof majority and that proves IL want his nonsense.
He has poured $1 million into tryin’ to save McAuliffe — that does not sound like he cares about the Wingman too much.

  25. Munger loses, Rauner will shrug, say, “Okay, the offices should be merged anyway.”

Comment by Bobby Catalpa Friday, Sep 2, 16 @ 12:38 pm

  26. - Annonin’ -

    With respect back at you.

I ceded the point that weeks and weeks passed and I’m utterly confused why nothing, not even an introduction ad made its way anywhere on the Tee-Vee. Nothing.

I also cede the point as to the obsession to have House victories to seem to be “winning”, but at what, I’m confused about that too.

But, if we all get to September 15th and Munger isn’t up with ads, then I’ll think there’s more to all this then waiting on a calendar.

If Mendoza can organize Labor and Democrats in the POTUS voting universe, untouched by Rauner’s millions, as in plural, then I’m sure I’ll change my thoughts.

Have a good Labor Day weekend

Comment by Oswego Willy Friday, Sep 2, 16 @ 12:56 pm

  27. Yiddishcowboy - I can only assume your question is snark.

Surely you don’t have to ask why it is gross that someone who is not of cultural retirement age is (a) collecting a sizeable public pension, and (b) collecting a public pension while also collecting a public paycheck that also has a pension.

Comment by Not It Friday, Sep 2, 16 @ 1:30 pm

  28. - Not It -

    Asking, no snark

Are you saying Mendoza is right now collecting a pension check, like getting her pension now?

    Just so I’m clear…

Comment by Oswego Willy Friday, Sep 2, 16 @ 1:37 pm

  29. All seems like standard oppo stuff. Nothing too exciting to be, but maybe I’m just getting jaded.

I don’t get the 2 salaries piece at all though. Did she have a second job when she was a rep?

Comment by Centennial Friday, Sep 2, 16 @ 2:42 pm

  30. That’s what I’m asking, OW. I honestly don’t know.

Comment by Not It Friday, Sep 2, 16 @ 2:54 pm

  31. ===I honestly don’t know. ===

Then use the Google. She’s 44 and not a firefighter. Do you really think she’s getting a pension?

Comment by Rich Miller Friday, Sep 2, 16 @ 2:55 pm

  32. If you don’t know, odds are…

Can’t the OR that exists be enough, lol.

Comment by Oswego Willy Friday, Sep 2, 16 @ 3:03 pm

  33. My eyes hurt just looking at it. Amateur.

And I hate to break this to you “Not It” but Mendoza is too young to collect a pension. Facts please.

Comment by Shytown Friday, Sep 2, 16 @ 3:14 pm

  34. “Use the Google.”

Or, read the unclear “footnote” at the bottom of the graphic printed in 2 point type.

Comment by Arthur Andersen Friday, Sep 2, 16 @ 3:16 pm

  35. Is this race really going to be Blago and Madigan versus Ryan and Rauner? The problem for Rauner and his grand plan to crush Madigan and “turn around” Illinois is Trump and Kirk aren’t driving the base in Illinois.
