Rauner a “one-man interest group”

Posted in:

* Jim Nowlan has a new column about lobbyists and interest groups and includes this thought as well

Having already personally committed $20 million or more to the campaigns of others, Rauner is now both inside the game as governor and also a one-man interest group, doggedly pursuing a business-friendly, anti-union agenda.

That’s one way of looking at it, for sure.

  2. Yep, this democratic socialists’ worst nightmare.

  3. Do you think the Governor may feel conflicted? I believe he should!

  4. Believe it or not I think that actually sells Rauner short. It’s not just a one-man operation, it’s a full blown machine, he has a team in place all answerable to him. That team currently runs the Governor’s office, his campaign apparatus, one or possibly two state superpacs and the state party which is mostly funding and essentially controlling at least the campaign operations of the two legislative caucuses. It’s an impressive consolidation of power in such a short time.

  5. Lobbyists don’t tell you want you need to know or how you should perceive an issue, the Governor can do all of that for you.

  6. and the other side is what? a democracy? cause we all know how the leader of the party and the House operates.

  8. He’s the Boss. He’s the money. Cross him and you’ll pay for it.

Look at McCann: he voted his district one time, a meaningless vote at that, and Rauner went after him with everything.

Think the rest of them got the message?

  9. The ultimate special interest, what a hypocrite.

  10. =Oh for pete’s sake stop being a victim.= So how is it different? We know Madigan runs the Dems similarly - it just not with his money.

  11. Nowlan always offers thoughtful commentary. And I agree the Gov is a one-person lobbying/interest group … with LOTS of money.

I think Nowlan has earlier asserted, in various ways, that Madigan is the very same, with lots of money (far less than the Gov’s) but far more (unionized) foot-soldiers as well as other political apparatus at his disposal.

The result is the stalemate we are in … which will likely make Illinois for the worse financially by the day until the 2018 election cycle occurs. And that election will be all about who’s to blame for Illinois financial woes. #MoreBadStuff

  12. Based on the recent comments by Springfield Clinic & Memorial Hospital I’m not certain that they would agree that the Governor’s agenda is “business friendly”. I guess it depends on whose business you’re talking about. . . .

Comment by Out Here In The Middle Tuesday, Sep 13, 16 @ 3:04 pm

  13. >doggedly pursuing a business-friendly, anti-union agenda.

Depends on the business. He doesn’t seem very friendly to businesses waiting on state payments, human service providers, higher education, and businesses that depend on customers from these.

  14. not a victim, just a realist. have you ever been to a Dem Party…cong comm….meeting?

Comment by anonymous Tuesday, Sep 13, 16 @ 3:42 pm

  15. “We know Madigan runs the Dems similarly - it just not with his money.” And not the Governor’s office and not the Senate either. It doesn’t bother you that Rauner is trying to buy two of the three branches of government? This is the guy that calls the entire judicial branch “corrupt” because they take campaign money from lawyers.

  16. He’s not just a one-man interest group, he has a single directive.

Eliminate organized labor, unions, in Illinois.

  18. “…doggedly pursuing a business-friendly, anti-union agenda.”

How has Rauner created a business-friendly environment?

  19. A lobbyist with a veto pen. Now that’s power.

Comment by Suburbanon Tuesday, Sep 13, 16 @ 4:50 pm

  20. “The ultimate special interest, what a hypocrite”

No question about it. The hypocrisy is stunning–coming into politics to attack certain special interests and insiders and being perhaps the biggest special interest in Illinois history, per capita.

Many of us, if not all of us, as human beings are hypocritical from time to time, or often. I certainly am. The problem is when the hypocrisy is as large as it is with Rauner.
